    ROCK IN JAPAN
    30th July 2003

Timing is everything for MICK ROCK, the rock 'n' roll photographer who, for many people, was just as integral to the glam rock movement as the musicians he helped immortalise. Many photographers can claim to have captured a moment from the heady days of satin and sleaze, but none can claim to have defined it the way he did.

Mick was more than just a photographer, he was an insider and his photographs of DAVID BOWIE, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop and many others are as revealing and renowned as the glam revolution itself.

"I just happened to be in the right place at the right time," the highly energetic Rock says when asked how he got his start. "I'm very much a product of my generation. I was only interested in today, not tomorrow. But I came out of it with a treasure trove (of photos)."

Now, for the first time in Japan, you can catch the man's work at a comprehensive exhibition titled Rock 'n' Roll Eye: The Photography of Mick Rock, being held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography in Ebisu Garden Place. Mick, who had never been to Japan before, calls it the best exhibition he has ever had.

Rock first got his start as both a writer and photographer, doing work for such music magazines as Rolling Stone. But it was his photos of David Bowie, during the artist's Ziggy Stardust days, that really sent Rock down the road to professional photography. Rock and Bowie struck up a very good friendship - Rock becoming his "official" photographer - and it was through him that Rock met Iggy Pop and Lou Reed. He says that there weren't many other photographers shooting those musicians in the early days, so it helped him to solidify his place among them.

Rock 'n' Roll Eye: The Photography of Mick Rock
    Through August 28th, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. (until 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday)
Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, (a 10-minute walk from JR Ebisu Station).
Admission: 1,000 yen for adults, 800 yen for middle and high school students and university students.
    Information: (03) 5280-9996.

THE BITS FLEW FAR AND WIDE
    29th July 2003

UK tribute band CHANGES BOWIE have a gig lined up at The Grapes, Bury St. Edmunds on Sunday 3rd August - more information can be found at www.changesbowie.co.uk...

Millions of viewers are tuning in to watch 25 relatively unknown hopefuls compete for a treasured place in the BBC's Fame Academy. One in particular RYAN FLETCHER appeared in Scottish soap River City, starring in more than ten episodes as bully boy Vader. Last year Ryan was on the shortlist for Fame Academy but didn't quite make it into the show. He also bared all on stage playing DAVID BOWIE in 'Waste of Makeup'. RSAMD graduate Ryan also plays with band Merchant City...

    THE THREE TUNS LATEST
    28th July 2003

The Three Tuns June 2003 Update: A conversation held some months back with one of the Noble House managers remarked, in effect, that not enough local people used THE THREE TUNS to justify it being kept as a public house.

It's looking more and more likely that this building will end up as a restaurant. On this basis, Beckenham residents and we DAVID BOWIE fans may have to settle for the building shell remaining and the Bowie plaque being refitted.

It would help if, to achieve this, there was more support from David Bowie fans worldwide. The worse scenario is that we at LEAST manage to get the David Bowie plaque back in it's rightful place.

So how can you help? First off, if you all could post up fresh comments to the online Three Tuns Petition this would help enormously. I will then print off and forward all comments directly onto the Chief Planner at Bromley Council, within the next 10 days.

If you would like to write, telephone or email directly the Chief Planner you can use the contact details below:

The new owner of the building may be visiting Beckenham at the end of August to meet interested parties. No date is yet set. We Bowie fans NEED to make as big as impact as possible to convince him to do the right thing in AT LEAST restoring the db plaque.

If you know or anyone knows of any other locals to Beckenham who could weave a spell and impress the new owner, or has any other suggestions, please contact Cliff Watkins directly with your suggestions.

    TURN TO QUESTION THE MOUNTAIN
    26th July 2003

There was an interesting piece in THE NEW YORK OBSERVER on 21st July entitled 'Bowie's Bower' by Blair Golson, covering the news that DAVID BOWIE and IMAN have bought the 64-acre Little Tonshi Mountain in Shokan, New York, near Woodstock in the Catskills.

The couple closed in late January, paying $1,162,500 for the vacant tract of land, which is next-door to Allaire Studios where David recorded his Heathen album.

David spoke of the area in Interview (June 2002)... "This is not cute, on top of this mountain: It's stark, and it has a Spartan quality about it. In this instance, the retreat atmosphere honed my thoughts... I've written in the mountains before, but never with such gravitas."

Until recently, both the smaller and larger Tonshi mountains were privately owned by descendants of the industrialist Raymond Pitcairn. In the mid-1920's, Pitcairn built what he called 'Glen Tonche', the mountain-top estate on the larger mountain. In 2001, a photographer and musician named Randall Wallace and his wife Jackie established Allaire Studios on part of the estate. The main studio room there has soaring, 40-foot-plus ceilings and sweeping views of the nearby Ashokan reservoir.

    OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE
    21st July 2003

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 2003-07-21 10:47:39
NEW STUDIO ALBUM TO BE RELEASED SEPTEMBER 15th 2003

DAVID BOWIE announced today the details of his 26th studio album 'REALITY' that will be released in the Autumn to coincide with his first world tour in almost a decade.

'REALITY' is due for release on Iso/Columbia Records on September 15th, just prior to Bowie beginning his highly anticipated sold out European tour, which will commence on October 7th in Copenhagen and comes to a close in Glasgow on November 28th.

The eleven track album was recorded in New York over the past few months with the highly acclaimed band that performed on the 'Heathen' mini tour of last year, including long-time Bowie musicians such as vocalist Gail Ann Dorsey, pianist Mike Garson, drummer Sterling Campbell and guitarists Earl Slick and Gerry Leonard. Additional instruments were played by Tony Visconti on bass and Bowie himself on keyboards, guitar and sax.

'REALITY' again sees Bowie reuniting with his long time co-producer, Tony Visconti. The duo were responsible for last year's critically acclaimed 'Heathen' as well as classics such as 'Scary Monsters', 'Low', and 'Heroes'.

Bowie describes the sound of the record as 'Built to play live' and more intriguingly as being 'A bit thrusty'.

Expanding on that, David commented on the themes contained within the album 'Nothing more complicated than a collection of songs, many written in Downtown New York. It covers a small period of writing at the start of 2003. I write continually and, these days, it's great to be able to release things as I write them'

There are nine Bowie originals on the album, only one of those has been heard before. The song 'Never Get Old' which is currently being used throughout Europe as part of a co promotion with Vittel Water in which David looks back with a wry smile at some of his previous incarnations.

The album also includes two cover versions; the first is the track 'Pablo Picasso' which was originally recorded by cult hero Jonathan Richman.

The other cover on 'REALITY' is one of the lesser know songs by the late George Harrison. The song 'Try Some, Buy Some' has been on Bowie's 'to cover' list for years ever since he bought a copy of the version made by ex-Ronette Ronnie Spector in the 70's.

Of the two covers Bowie remarked that 'At one time I was compiling a Pin Ups II list and both of these songs were on it. I must have over fifty songs on that list now. As it's very unlikely that I'll do another Pin Ups, I just grab a couple of irresistible favourites from the list every time I go into the studio. I get a real kick from doing covers, I'm such a rock fan at heart.'

The full track listing for 'REALITY' is as follows:

         New Killer Star
         Pablo Picasso
         Never Get Old
         The Loneliest Guy
         Looking for Water
         She'll Drive the Big Car
         Days
         Fall Dog Bombs The Moon
         Try Some, Buy Some
         Reality
         Bring Me The Disco King

The very distinctive artwork for 'REALITY' is the result of collaboration between Bowie, Rex Ray and Jonathan Barnbrook. Both Ray and Barnbrook have worked with David in the past on the likes of 'Earthling' and 'hours...' (Rex Ray) and Heathen (Barnbrook) but 'REALITY' is the first time that the three of them have worked together on a project.

The artwork for the record, according to Bowie was inspired by 'An assumption that there is little reality left that corresponds to the old definition.'

'REALITY' is released September 15th via Iso/Columbia Records in the UK and the following day (16th) in the USA.

More details about the album as well as the opportunity to hear parts of the album online at Bowienet (www.davidbowie.com) will be revealed soon.

THE BITS FLEW FAR AND WIDE
    19th July 2003

On rufuswainwright.com I found today this DAVID BOWIE-related news concerning Gerry Leonard and Sterling Campbell: The speculation is over... it's now official. 'Want', the third album from Rufus Wainwright, will be released on September 23rd. Produced by Marius deVries (Bjork, David Bowie, U2) and recorded in New York and London, the album boasts 14 new tracks and notable musicians such as Charlie Sexton, Sterling Campbell, Gerry Leonard, Levon Helm, Kate McGarrigle, Linda Thompson and Martha Wainwright. The Want sessions were so successful that there were way too many tracks to fit on one CD and a second volume of Want will be released early next year - from Arjan...

'The Man Who Fell To Earth' can be seen tomorrow at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Polk Museum of Art, Florida. DAVID BOWIE and Candy Clark star in this offbeat drama about an alien. Museum admission is $3 for adults, $2 for students. Ages 5 and younger free. Also the following weekend (Sat) at 2:00 pm: Basquiat is playing...

    ONCE THERE WERE MOUNTAINS
    19th July 2003

Woodstock, N.Y., may not seem like an ideal home for rocker DAVID BOWIE, but according to The New York Observer, the 56-year-old singer and his model wife Iman are buying a large chunk of land there for $1.16 million. Known as Little Tonshi Mountain, the 64-acre property is in a secluded area of Shokan, near Woodstock, the woodsy mecca in the Catskills. It also happens to be close to Allaire Studios, where Bowie recorded his last album, Heathen - (from Forbes.com).

And again reported in the Daily Dish on SFGate.com... Bowie Buys a Mountain - Pop legend David Bowie has splashed out a staggering $1.16 million on a mountain in New York state. The star reportedly fell in love with 64 acre Tonshi Mountain near Woodstock in upstate New York while recording his latest album, 2001's Heathen, in a recording studio at the top of an adjacent peak. Despite the hefty price-tag, Little Tonshi doesn't have any buildings - (from Shelley)....

    FRESH ART 2003 INSPIRATIONS
    16th July 2003

Congratulations are due to BW contributor STUART DAZELL who has been included in a special exhibition at Fresh Art 2003 in London, called 'Inspirations'.

Nightclubbing #2 Stuart, who has contributed pieces to The Arts Lab section of this website explains the exhibition theme is that each artist produces a piece of work with an explanation of the inspiration behind it... "A newly completed painting entitled 'Nightclubbing #2' was inspired by the classic Bowie/Iggy Pop track from the 1977 album 'The Idiot' which was played on constant repeat as the work was created. The track 'Nightclubbing', a superbly powerful composition, is simultaneously exciting and yet slightly sinister, elements I have tried to reflect in this abstract work.

"The painting has been created by initially 'texturing' the surface of the canvas with 'nightclub flyers' and advertisements, then charcoal and lacquer were applied, eventually creating the first stage of the picture. Finally the surface is scratched to highlight areas of the canvas and introduce an interesting tonal quality."

The work will be on display for all 3 days July 18th until 20th at the Business Design Centre, 52 Upper Street, Islington, London - Stand A139. Visit the www.freshartfair.co.uk website for more details and information.

After the exhibition, the painting will be sold by Christie's at the Fair with all proceeds going to the Terence Higgins Trust charity.

You can view more of Stuart's work via www.modernartuk.com which is where his main exhibition paintings can be viewed.

(Ed. Well done Stuart you deserve it :)

    BOWIE BACK WITH REALITY
    15th July 2003

ROLLING STONE magazine have published a short interview with DAVID BOWIE in their next issue concentrating on his forthcoming album release Reality.

Talking about the song 'Pablo Picasso' David says: "I've always wanted to do it," Bowie says of the song. "It's just a treat. On Heathen (2002), I did a piece by the Pixies, called 'Cactus.' 'Pablo Picasso,' at least the way we've done it, occupies a similar place on the album."

And the other cover song 'Try Some, Buy Some' he goes on to state: "At that time, it was the only single by a solo artist that actually had all four Beatles on it. The Beatles had kind of disbanded, but they all loved Ronnie, and it was George Harrison producing it, so they all crept in and different times to put parts on it. We were pretty true to the original arrangement, but the overall atmosphere is somewhat different. It's a dense piece."

And on the album itself he says: "I think it's a very good album. I don't want to talk it up too much, because it's immodest."

Officials from the venue said the show on November 28 was one of their fastest sell-outs. Some die-hard fans even slept overnight outside the venue to ensure they got the chance to see their idol. Tickets went on sale yesterday at 9am and were gone by 10.30am leaving thousands of fans disappointed.

The star, whose hits include 'Ashes To Ashes', 'China Girl', 'Let's Dance' and 'Changes', will play hall four of the venue. His Glasgow show is part of the 'A Reality' tour, named after his forthcoming album, and will start in Europe in October before moving on to North America, Australia and the Far East.

The singer - famed for his incarnations as Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane and the Thin White Duke - will play to more than a million people in 17 countries during the seven-month series of concerts. The concert tour is the artist's first major set of gigs since his Outside World tour of 1995.

A spokeswoman for the SECC said: "The tickets were sold out in an hour and half. "People were queuing when we opened the doors at 9am and the tickets were all gone by 10.30am. "There were also a few overnight stays, but when it is an artist like David Bowie, we expect there to be a very high demand for tickets."

The 56-year-old singer infuriated fans last month when he said he had no immediate plans to venture north of the Border after announcing gigs in London, Birmingham, Manchester and Dublin. But promoters DF Concerts managed to persuade him to change his mind and another date was added to his itinerary.

The music legend kicks off the tour in Copenhagen on October 7. It will be followed by the shows in England and Ireland before he brings his entourage to Glasgow for the eagerly awaited gig. It will be the first time he has played in Scotland since a low-key concert at Glasgow's Barrowland in 1997.

The Dandy Warhols, whose hits include 'Bohemian Like You', have been confirmed as support for all of Bowie's UK and Ireland dates.

After the complete nightmare of the past three weeks, this afternoon WONDERWORLD has now been finally relocated onto brand new servers with a completely new hosting company in Texas. I'm sure you'll all notice a big difference... and so will my bank manager ;) Fans with their own BW email addresses should see their service restored shortly. There are still a few more bits n' bobs to be uploaded onto the site, please bear with me whilst I get it all back up (ooer missus). I've been working on the site continually to get normal service resumed as quickly as possible. Thanks for your patience and understanding. Unfortunately the situation was completely out of my hands and frankly there was absolutely nothing whatsoever I could do. I'll tell you all about it in my next column. Big thanks and much appreciation to Ronnie the new hosting company owner, who has been tremendously helpful in getting BW back online asap :) ...

UPDATE: Ad agency makes DAVID BOWIE the face of Vittel water: Nestlé-owned mineral water Vittel may be one of the most emblematic French brands, writes the newspaper Le Figaro, but its new advertising agency, Ogilvy & Mather, has looked outside the country's borders for a personality to front its new TV campaign.

Having employed a strategic approach based around the concept of 'vitality' for a number of years, Vittel will now be promoted around the idea of 'renaissance', Le Figaro says, using the line: 'Vittel. Chaque jour une nouvelle vie' ('Vittel. A new life every day'). The new campaign features rock star David Bowie, famous for reinventing himself at various stages of his career. Asked who the campaign is targeted at, Ogilvy spokesman Bernard Bureau tells Le Figaro: "Everybody. Those who know Bowie and those who don't. He is an artist who has evolved his personality in each of his musical phases. He perfectly embodies the notion of renaissance."...

    BOWIE GETS FILTERED
    5th July 2003

Filter Magazine Issue 6 DAVID BOWIE adorns the cover of the current FILTER magazine.

(Issue Six: July/August) 'Bowie's return to the Golden Years' sees him adorned in gold, looking very at home and lounging regally... sat on a throne underneath scaffolding.

Issue 6 - Preview by Gregg LaGambina:
So, we had this throne that was lying around the Filter Magazine offices and we were arguing and yelling and getting all hot and bothered about who we thought would be most worthy to sit in it and then we heard tracks from the forthcoming David Bowie album. We followed him all the way to his studio in New York City, listened to his forthcoming Reality, sponged up all of his charming and cryptic philosophy, and came away with the confident prediction of his triumphant return to form. Read, listen, find out in Number Six.

    Visit filter-mag.com for more details.

Thanks to Zimmie for the pointer.

CAN YOU HEAR ME... MAJOR TOM?
    4th July 2003

DAVID BOWIE joins TEAM ENCOUNTER'S missions to the stars. Is it any wonder that a man whose career constantly pushed new limits and explored new possibilities would join Team Encounter's amazing journey to the stars?

Team Encounter will place its 'cosmic call' Saturday to possible extraterrestrial neighbours using a 230-foot diameter radio astronomy dish in Evpatoriya, Ukraine, and a temporary mission control set up at the International UFO Museum and Research Center in Roswell. The message will be a digital mixed bag: text, photos, and audio and video clips from paying customers and school kids all over the world. The intended targets are five stars deemed reasonable candidates for harboring life-supporting planets.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of his classic album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars, Team Encounter will broadcast the landmark recording across the galaxy. Songs such as Starman, Moonage Daydream, and Lady Stardust will, appropriately enough, be carried into deep space by a high-powered-laser beam. It's all part of Team Encounter's Cosmic Call laser extravaganza, set to take place in Rosewell, New Mexico during July 2003.

Beyond that, the adventurous Mr. Bowie will also be included on Team Encounter's incredible space mission that will launch the DNA, messages and photos of millions of people into deep space.

A photograph of David and his personal message will be onboard the starship bound to leave the solar system! David's message reads: 'Commencing countdown, engines on! - Major Tom.'

The votes for the favourite song from The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars album to be included in Cosmic Call 2003 went as follows:

'Five Years' 82 votes / 'Starman' 161 votes / 'Ziggy Stardust' 147 votes / 'Rock N Roll Suicide' 105 votes.

Visit the teamencounter.com website for more information and details.

Thank you."

Update: The new owners of the THREE TUNS public house in Beckenham have taken over the property and here's the next update/latest development in the saga...

The Three Tuns June 2003 "Latest information is two houses with parking spaces on current car park. Conversion of upper floors to flats. Toilets provided within existing ground floor space. Probably no longer financially viable as a pub. The Thai restaurant scheme has resurfaced as a possibility. Meanwhile, the place is boarded up and looks very sorry. See photo." - (from Cliff Watkins on behalf of Beckenham's Copers Cope Area Residents' Association).

    I DEMAND A BETTER FUTURE
    1st July 2003

Speaking from personal experience over the past few weeks, the process of obtaining your tickets through BowieNet has never been easier or less stressful. OK so you pay an extra $15 in handling charges, but it's definitely well worth it in the long run.

I'm dreading my next phone bill after spending ages on the telephone ringing box offices around Europe, continuously pressing re-dial only find out the show has been sold out in 5 minutes or so, or that the remaining seats are placed at the back of the venue. Plus with BowieNet advance tickets you are guaranteed getting a decent seat.

When the tickets go on sale for the rest of the world, i.e. USA, Far East and especially Australia, which is bound to be completely sold out everywhere. I honestly don't think there's been a better time than NOW to join up with BowieNet.

    BOWIE TICKETS: THE REALITY
    1st July 2003

As you know, all DAVID BOWIE European tickets for the A Reality dates are now on general sale. As far as I can tell, the following dates are now sold out: Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki, Oslo, Rotterdam, Manchester, Birmingham (19th), Dublin and London (25th).

I noticed today that a "few" tickets went on sale for about 20 minutes for the first Copenhagen show, these must be unclaimed or overbooked tickets. So it might be well worth checking the "sold out" venues box office web pages every now and again. You might get lucky.

There are still advance tickets available to BowieNet members for David's shows in Vienna (29th October) and Birmingham (20th November). These are available only until tomorrow (Wed 2nd July) at 10:00am EST (3:00pm UK time).

Also the BowieNet Members presale of VIP/Travel package offers ended last Friday, these are now available to the general public at https://tickets.ultrastar.com/.
