BUDDHA SPECIAL FEATURE
30th September 2007

Check out the new DAVID BOWIE re-releases on CD and DVD for The Buddha Of Suburbia.

This, Bowie's 19th studio album from 1993, is one of his personal favourites. The music differs significantly to the motif driven small pieces that he wrote for the TV mini series of the same name. Instead Bowie took lots of narrative provocation from Hanif Kureishi's novel and alongside his own personal reminiscences from the 1970's created a textural backdrop to create an amazing brand new album that is well worth discovering.

Included on this special promo page are song downloads for 'Buddha Of Suburbia' and 'Dead Against It' as well as the promo video for Buddha Of Suburbia in either hi or low formats for RealPlayer or WindowsMedia.

THE SUBTERRANEANS PROJECT
25th September 2007

Dylan Howe and The Subterraneans DYLAN HOWE AND THE SUBTERRANEANS are to perform DAVID BOWIE's Low and "Heroes" Reimagined at the London Jazz Festival Launch on 21st-22nd November.

Dylan Howe and The Subterraneans are the bold sound of the future from the past. David Bowie and Brian Eno's groundbreaking music brilliantly re-imagined, with artwork and projections by Sir Peter Blake.

This unmissable multimedia event is an adaptation of the ambient pieces from the classic albums Low and "Heroes". Future Jazz Sextet with Strings, Electronics and Voice.

"Forming a third stream between the seminal '70s Bowie albums and the Philip Glass adaptations is a new project lighting the touch paper of improvisation and igniting fresh explorations of some of the most important music of the 20th century.

This is the Art event of 2007 - featuring leading players of the world stage, and celebrating and re-energizing the music that changed a generation forever 30 years ago..."

You can get a taster by checking out their edited demo versions of 'Art Decade', 'Warszawa', 'Some Are' and 'V2-Schneider' at myspace.com/dylanhoweandthesubterraneans as well as the low-down on the project.

DAVID SUPPORTS JENA SIX
18th September 2007

DAVID BOWIE has donated $10,000 to the JENA SIX Legal Defense Fund. The case, involves the prosecution of Mychal Bell, 17, Robert Bailey Jr., Theo Shaw, Carwin Jones, Bryant Purvis, and an unnamed minor for their role in an altercation with a classmate following a series of racial incidents in the town of 3,000 after three nooses were hung in a tree at the local high school.

"There is clearly a separate and unequal judicial process going on in the town of Jena," Bowie said. "A donation to the Jena 6 Legal Defense Fund is my small gesture indicating my belief that a wrongful charge and sentence should be prevented."

Presently, the NAACP, in conjunction with the American Civil Liberties Union, the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Southern University Law Center, has provided some additional legal support and resources to the defendants' attorneys.

"We are gratified that rock star David Bowie was moved to donate to the NAACP's Jena campaign," said NAACP National Board of Directors Chairman Julian Bond. "Mr. Bowie shares our outrage. We hope others will join him."

The two people who tie everything that we're about and into together."...

COMMITTEE VOTES TO 86 FORTY DEUCE
14th September 2007

The Community Board 2 Business Committee voted unanimously after a packed meeting on Tuesday against a liquor license for FORTY DEUCE, a burlesque club proposed for the ground floor of 19 Kenmare Street, New York City.

More than 200 neighbours, some waiving posters that said "No Nudity" over pictures of nearly naked women, turned up at St. Anthony of Padua's basement meeting hall on September 11th to oppose the club proposed by Ivan Kane, who owns two clubs of the same name, one in Las Vegas and the other in Los Angeles.

Kane and his associates made a personal pitch at the meeting, saying the club was not a strip club but a sedate and old-fashion burlesque house. There would be no nudity or lap dancing, and an adult entertainment permit is not required, the group said.

But opponents were not moved. Ray Lee, committee chairperson, said later that "We listened to the grassroots sentiments about Forty Deuce and decided a burlesque club that stays open until 4 a.m. was not a good fit in a residential area already saturated with more than 20 bars and clubs."

The committee is recommending that the full community board vote on September 20th to ask the State Liquor Authority to deny the license. Last April the full board had voted to recommended granting the liquor license. But neighbors, including Sook Ling Lai, director of the Chinatown Head Start program on Mott St. a block away from the Kenmare St. location, urged the community board in June to reverse the recommendation, and the board complied.

Forty Deuce, named after the slang term for 42nd St., has celebrity investors like DAVID BOWIE and Sting, and would have three serving bars in a 4,500-square-foot vacant space formerly occupied by Charlie's Clam Bar.

KEEP A LITTLE MARC IN YOUR HEART
13th September 2007

Broadcast this coming weekend on BBC RADIO TWO is '20th Century Boy - An Appreciation Of Marc Bolan' on Saturday 15th September at 8.00 - 9.00pm GMT.

On the weekend of the 30th anniversary of his death at the age of 29, and in the month when he would have turned 60, Marc Bolan's life, music and legacy is examined with the help of an extensive cast list of friends, family and collaborators.

The programme, presented by Paul Sexton, traces Bolan's long and sometimes painful journey from the streets of Hackney in London, to his early unsuccessful singles in his own name and with John's Children and Tyrannosaurus Rex, on to his glam-era pop idol status as front man of T Rex.

Bolan's brother Harry Feld, schoolfriend Richard Young (now a highly respected photographer), mate and rival DAVID BOWIE, and early manager Simon Napier-Bell all help to illustrate the early years.

Pink Floyd's David Gilmour and Rick Wright remember Bolan hanging out at their office, while producer Tony Visconti recalls working on early Tyrannosaurus Rex material and also how Bolan morphed into the ultimate Seventies heart-throb. Bob Harris, who met him in the company of Bolan's early mentor, John Peel, talks about compering the tour on which the phrase "T Rextacy" was coined, and the programme features archive excerpts from his on-the-road report about the event for BBC Radio 1's Scene And Heard programme.

Archive Bolan clips from a Peel show from 1968 and a 1972 interview, when he was the hottest star in the UK, also feature. Noel Gallagher of Oasis talks about the classic run of T Rex singles, while Bolan biographer Mark Paytress considers his contribution to pop culture.

The family story is told by Bolan's partner, Gloria Jones, and their son, Rolan Bolan, who talk about the tribute concert that takes place tonight. Also featured are friend Bernie Taupin and modern-day PR guru Alan Edwards, who looked after Bolan's publicity, and there's a rare radio appearance by fellow Seventies star Roy Wood.

Presenter and Producer/Paul Sexton.

Tucked away in the business pages of THE INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY newspaper last weekend, was the news that DAVID BOWIE has regained the rights to all his back catalogue. The fifty-five million dollars he was paid/borrowed in 1997 via BowieBonds, from Prudential Assurance for the royalties for his pre-Nineties catalogue has now been paid back on all the 257 songs. He used some of the millions to buy out Tony Defries and Mainman who owned a large percentage of the rights to the songs up to 'Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)'. Ten years on, Bowie has now regained full control of all his songs and is believed to have increased his already substantial fortune significantly. Visit independent.co.uk - [from JBK]...
