SOPHIA ANNE CARUSO EXCITED FOR LONDON
26th April 2016

Sophia Anne Caruso and Michael C. Hall in Lazarus Sophia Anne Caruso in New York LAZARUS actress SOPHIA ANNE CARUSO is interviewed on the THIS WEEK IN NEW YORK blog.

Highlights mentioning working with DAVID BOWIE include:

SAC: I got to work with him directly; he came into rehearsals often, he gave me notes, we talked. I like to say that I knew him and that I collaborated with him, for sure. I was not aware of his illness; none of the cast was. His death came as a very big surprise to us, and the hard part, but also the good part, of the day after was that we were all together. We were recording our cast album, which was hard because our voices were in shock because of crying and the strain, but being there was bonding. Nothing would have been worse than staying home alone during that day, but we decided to do the cast album. We listened to the recording, and I think that there's something so special about it.

SAC: It's an honor to sing his music. I've always been inspired by his music, and I've always loved it. My mom owned vintage stores, and she always had funky seventies stuff. She was always playing Bowie.

SAC: I'm going to London in the Fall to do Lazarus, which I'm so excited about. I think it will be very well received there.

SPIDER FROM MARS: MY LIFE WITH BOWIE
12th April 2016

Spider From Mars: My Life With Bowie The memoirs of drummer MICK "WOODY" WOODMANSEY entitled: 'Spider From Mars: My Life With Bowie' are to be published via St. Martin's Press.

Woody reveals what it was like to be at the white-hot centre of Bowie's self-creation, with never-before-told stories and never-before-seen photographs. Woodmansey offers details of the album sessions for The Man Who Sold The World, Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars, Aladdin Sane: the four albums that made Bowie sensational. And, as fame beckoned but eventually consumed Bowie, Woodmansey recalls the wild tours, eccentric characters, and rock 'n' roll excess that drove the band apart.

A vivid and unique evocation of a transformative musical era and the enigmatic, visionary musician at the center of it, with a foreword by legendary producer Tony Visconti, Spider from Mars is for everyone who values David Bowie.

The book, which Woody began writing back in June 2014, is scheduled for publication later this year in October 2016.

KEEP YOUR 'LECTRIC EYE ON EBAY
11th April 2016

George Simms Serious Moonlight Ticket Wheel Currently up for grabs on eBay is this Serious Moonlight Tour Ticket Wheel owned by DAVID BOWIE touring band member GEORGE SIMMS.

George says: "RARE AND UNIQUE! I'm moving back to Europe, and I cannot possibly take all of my tour memorabilia with me, so I have decided to part with this treasured memento - a remarkable gift from David Bowie and his organisation.

George Simms Serious Moonlight Ticket Wheel In place of a standard gold or platinum record, band members and principal support staff were given a truly unique souvenir of the 97 sold-out shows of the 1983 Serious Moonlight Tour. One ticket from every performance of the tour - from the opening show on May 18 at the Forest National in Brussels to the December 8 concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum - has been assembled and framed, along with an identification plaque. The central ticket, from the December 8th Hong Kong show, bears the number '016'. That represents my baggage tag number that accompanied me from city to city and hotel to hotel. I will include an original laminated No. 16 baggage tag as a bonus, along with the ticket wheel. Each recipient of a ticket wheel has his or her own baggage tag number as the printed number on the central Hong Kong ticket.

There is no way to estimate what a reasonable auction value would be for such a unique piece of tour memorabilia, so I have randomly selected a starting price of $250."

Be quick, view the eBay listing - there are only 15 hours to go before bidding ends on this treasured item.

'ON BOWIE' OUT TODAY
7th April 2016

On Bowie by Simon Critchley Published today is a new DAVID BOWIE book entitled: ON BOWIE by SIMON CRITCHLEY.

Published via Serpent's Tail, this 192-page paperback is also available in the Kindle format.

Synopsis: What made Bowie special? What made him the cultural icon he is today? And what made millions of people around the world tune into his peculiar wavelength and find exactly what they'd been looking for all along?

These are the questions asked by Simon Critchley in this keen-eyed, moving and textured tribute to Bowie. Each of the two dozen deceptively short chapters looks at Bowie from a new angle, slowly unfolding the enigma that was his artistic life into a celebration of what made him unique. From the author's earliest childhood exposure to the bizarre musical and sexual contours of Ziggy Stardust right through to the supernova glow of Blackstar, and covering everything in between, Critchley traces the development of Bowie's music and lyrics to tell the story of how he tapped into zeitgeist - and into our hearts.

Growing up in working-class suburban England, the young Critchley was instantly drawn to this creature from another planet, 'so sexual, so knowing, so strange'. Now a celebrated philosopher who Jonathan Lethem has called 'a figure of quite startling brilliance', Critchley draws on a plethora of cultural and philosophical touchpoints, as well as his own intensely personal response to the music, to paint an essential portrait of Bowie as songwriter, poet, performer and icon.

You can purchase ON BOWIE by Simon Critchley NOW.

I CAN'T GIVE EVERYTHING AWAY RELEASE
6th April 2016

David Bowie - I Can't Give Everything Away davidbowie.com have officially announced the release of DAVID BOWIE's third single from his ★ album - I CAN'T GIVE EVERYTHING AWAY (Radio Edit).

The animated visual has been designed and created by JONATHAN BARNBROOK.

"This is really a very simple little video that I wanted to be ultimately positive," Barnbrook says.

"We start off in the black and white world of ★, but in the final chorus we move to brilliant colour, I saw it as a celebration of David, to say that despite the adversity we face, the difficult things that happen such as David's passing, that human beings are naturally positive, they look forward and can take the good from the past and use it as something to help with the present. We are a naturally optimistic species and we celebrate the good that we are given."

BOWIE - PHOTOGRAPHS BY STEVE SCHAPIRO
4th April 2016

Bowie - Photographs by Steve Schapiro Published this month is the eagerly anticipated new hardback book BOWIE - Photographs by Steve Schapiro on Thursday 28th April.

At the apex of David Bowie's spectacular rise to fame and glory, photographer Steve Schapiro seized a rare invitation from Bowie's manager for a private photo session with the pop star in LA in 1974...

Bowie - Photographs by Steve Schapiro Bowie - Photographs by Steve Schapiro Synopsis: David Bowie, by 1974, was a man of many faces and as many albums, had already lived the life of Ziggy Stardust and launched Aladdin Sane, with albums Pinups and Diamond Dogs soon to come. A musical force to be reckoned with, Bowie was also widely regarded as a fashion icon, pushing the envelope of sexuality and style and having created an internationally renowned persona.

The mostly never-before-published images in Schapiro's rare collection represent Bowie at his most creative and inspired self and present a glimpse into the intimacy that Schapiro and Bowie shared during their time together. As Schapiro tells it: 'From the moment Bowie arrived, we seemed to hit it off. Incredibly intelligent, calm, and filled with ideas, he talked a lot about Alistair Crowley whose esoteric writings he was heavily into at the time. When David heard that I had photographed Buster Keaton, one of his greatest heroes, we instantly became friends.'

Bowie - Photographs by Steve Schapiro The first photo session started at four in the afternoon and went through the night till dawn. Bowie went through countless costume changes, each more incredible than the last and each seemed to turn him into a totally different person. Bowie relentlessly created these unique characters, each seemingly alive in their own charismatic space for Schapiro to create visual images to complement their very existence and turn them into iconic images for all time.

Bowie and Schapiro kidded and laughed about shooting a series of close-up portraits on a putrid green background because they felt it was the worst possible background colour for a magazine, and so they did on this lark - with the image eventually becoming a People magazine cover.

The last image they made was at four in the morning to wrap up the marathon session when they went outside to shoot Bowie on his motorcycle - the sun hadn't yet risen and the shot was lit dramatically by only the headlights of a car. This image remains one of Schapiro's favourites and is certain to live on in posterity.

This hardback book contains 76-pages and is published by Powerhouse Books.

You can order BOWIE - Photographs by Steve Schapiro NOW and receive a pre-order price guarantee.

Synopsis: Rebel. Rebel - The eye of the Bowie storm

In 1972, David Bowie released his groundbreaking album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars. With it landed Bowie's Stardust alter-ego: A glitter-clad, mascara-eyed, sexually-ambiguous persona who kicked down the boundaries between male and female, straight and gay, fact and fiction into one shifting and sparkling phenomenon of 70s self-expression. Together, Ziggy the album and Ziggy the stage spectacular propelled the softly spoken Londoner into one of the world's biggest stars.

A key passenger on this glam trip into the stratosphere was fellow Londoner and photographer Mick Rock. Rock bonded with Bowie artistically and personally, immersed himself in the singer's inner circle, and, between 1972 1973, worked as Bowie's official photographer. This book brings together the best of Rock's Bowie portfolio with spectacular stage shots as well as intimate backstage portraits.

With a lenticular cover of different head-shots, the book stands to celebrate Bowie's fearless experimentation and reinvention. Inside, pictures for press, album jackets, and stills from promo movies sit alongside around 50 percent previously unpublished images, offering privileged access to the many facets of the Bowie's personality and fame. Through the aloof and approachable, the playful and serious, the candid and the contrived, this is a passionate tribute to an outstanding artist, unique creative vision, and eternal inspiration.

Photographs by Mick Rock, authors Barney Hoskyns and Michael Bracewell, editor Reuel Golden.

DB fishing on April 1st 1990 On this day, 26 years ago, DAVID BOWIE cancels a show at Westfalenhalle, Dortmund, Germany during his Sound+Vision World Tour.

He decides to go fishing on the Wesel-Datteln Canal on April 1st 1990, with several members of the tour crew.

Unfortunately, David only catches one fish, but he becomes really attached to it, and names him 'Ian'.

Three years later, reminiscing about this day, he composed a song for the upcoming television soundtrack 'The Buddha Of Suburbia'.
