'BABY UNIVERSAL '97' - PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED
30th January 2020

DAVID BOWIE IS IT ANY WONDER? STREAMING EP OF UNRELEASED & RARE MATERIAL

'BABY UNIVERSAL '97' (PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED) AVAILABLE NOW

FOURTH OF SIX TRACKS TO BE RELEASED OVER SIX WEEKS

'BABY UNIVERSAL '97' is now available for streaming as the fourth of six tracks making up DAVID BOWIE's IS IT ANY WONDER? EP (Parlophone) of unreleased and rare tracks being released once a week.

With lyrics by David and music co-written by David and Reeves Gabrels, 'Baby Universal' was initially recorded by Tin Machine for Tin Machine II. Released as the band's penultimate single in October 1991, it was performed during the final Tin Machine US television appearance on Saturday Night Live.

David Bowie Baby Universal '97 'Baby Universal' was regularly performed on Bowie's 'Outside Summer Festivals Tour' in 1996. The version now being released as 'BABY UNIVERSAL '97' was re-recorded for the Earthling album, originally intended to be sequenced between 'I'm Afraid Of Americans' and 'Law (Earthlings On Fire)'. The song was ultimately removed from the final album master, but David was very fond of this version and before the track was dropped was quoted as saying: "I thought 'Baby Universal' was a really good song and I don't think it got heard. I didn't really want that to happen to it, so I put it on this album... I think this version is very good.".

'BABY UNIVERSAL '97' is produced by David Bowie, co-produced by Reeves Gabrels and Mark Plati. It was recorded at Looking Glass Studios and mixed by Mark Plati at Right Track Recording, both in New York. The track features Gail Ann Dorsey on bass and vocals, Mike Garson on piano/keyboards, Mark Plati on programming/keyboards, Zachary Alford on drums and Reeves Gabrels on guitar, synths and vocals.

DAVID BOWIE 'BABY UNIVERSAL '97' IS AVAILABLE TO STREAM NOW ON PARLOPHONE.

I COULD PLAY THE WILD MUTATION...
29th January 2020

David Bowie Friars 29th January 1972 Today marks the 48th anniversary of the first ever live performance by DAVID BOWIE as his alter ego 'Ziggy Stardust' at the Borough Assembly Hall (Friars) in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire on 29th January 1972.

This first live gig, after a week's rehearsal at the Royal Ballroom in Tottenham, with the "official" opening gig of the UK tour being on the 10th February at the Toby Jug in Tolworth.

David informs the music press a few days previously that: "Our new stage act will be outrageous, quite outrageous but very theatrical. It's going to be costumed and choreographed, quite different to anything anyone else has tried to do before... No-one has ever seen anything like this before."

The opening act were 'Grand Canyon', who warmed up for David and the as yet unnamed 'Spiders From Mars'. With newly cut and dyed Schwarzkopf red hair and matching red plastic boxing boots, David took the stage sporting a bomber jacket and rolled up trousers, complete with a bulging codpiece a la A Clockwork Orange style... and Ziggy Stardust "the cosmic yob" was born.

His three piece band - Mick Ronson (lead guitar), Trevor Bolder (bass) and Mick 'Woody' Woodmansey (drums) were all togged up in gold outfits but obviously hadn't totally switched over into full on "Martian Spider" mode. Probably with all three feeling rather uncomfortable and not yet fully convinced about this adventure they were about to embark on.

David said: "The Ziggy hair came lock, stock and curler, from the cover of a magazine ('Honey' or the like) and was sported by a model doing a shoot for Kansai Yamamoto's first London show. I couldn't afford the clothes but I could get the hair. Suzi did a straight forward copy. The cut and colour were both Kansai's - Schwarzkopf red was the colour. I had her cut my hair short in early January 1972. No dye. Layed flatish. I believe that it went red and stood up between the 20th and 25th of January 1972, therefore that's when the Kansai show must have been given maximum press."

Originally back in 1969, the Friars Club was started in Aylesbury by a bunch of hippies lead by David Stopps. The very first ever concert they presented was in the New Friarage Hall on 2nd June 1969 and featured Mike Cooper and a band called Mandrake Paddle Steamer. Other acts followed that year including The Pretty Things, King Crimson, Mott The Hoople and a myriad of others. This club was closed down in August 1970 but reopened in April 1971 at a larger venue called the Borough Assembly Hall. Between 1971 and 1975, the Friars presented bands such as David Bowie, Roxy Music, The Velvet Underground, Can, MC5, Mott The Hoople and many more.

Promoter David R. Stopps recalling the Ziggy show said: "I remember him doing 'Rock N' Roll Suicide', maybe for the first time. He shouted at the audience, 'Gimme your hands, 'cos you're wonderful' and nobody got up. In those days they used to sit on the floor, and the stage was reasonably high and somebody got up to give him their hands, but only half-heartedly... I remember thinking, 'Oh that's a strong song, but nobody had heard it.'".

In September 1975, Friars moved yet again to an even larger venue in Aylesbury... the new Aylesbury Civic Centre which was inside the Maxwell Hall, which lasted as a venue until December 1984.

Trivia: Pure coincidence or planned? Did David chose this venue as the first ever live performance of Ziggy Stardust because the famous 'subway attack' scene in 'A Clockwork Orange' movie was actually filmed in the old Friars Square shopping centre in Aylesbury?

MONIQUE VAN VOOREN - REST IN PEACE
28th January 2020

Sad news to read that MONIQUE VAN VOOREN passed away on Saturday 25th January, aged ninety-two years of age.

The Belgian born dancer/model/actress/singer made her career in the USA making her onscreen debut in 'Tomorrow Is Too Late' (1950) which starred Vittorio De Sica. In 1953, she portrayed 'Lyra' the She-Devil in 'Tarzan and the She-Devil' and also appeared on Broadway in 'John Murray Anderson's Almanac', a musical revue. In 1958, she released the album 'Mink In HI-Fi' via RCA Victor with bandleader Skitch Henderson.

In November 1977, Monique accompanied DAVID BOWIE to a DEVO gig at Max's Kansas City on the 15th and the following day they attended the movie premiere of 'Close Encounters of The Third Kind' at the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York City, where they were both interviewed by a TV crew.

Rest in peace Monique van Vooren (25th March 1927 - 25th January 2020).

'STAY '97' - PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED
23rd January 2020

David Bowie Stay '97 Parlophone Records is proud to announce 'STAY '97' the third instalment of DAVID BOWIE's IS IT ANY WONDER? EP of six unreleased and rare tracks being released once a week.

'Stay' originally appeared on the 'Station To Station' album in 1976 and was released as a single in North America and Japan in August of that year.

The previously unreleased 1997 re-recording of 'Stay' began at The Factory in the Dublin Docklands during the pre-Earthling tour rehearsals while David, Mark Plati and Reeves Gabrels were preparing the backing/sequencer tracks before the rest of the band arrived, and the rehearsals started in earnest.

David wanted to 'update' some of his live show staples so they would sit well sonically with the Outside/Earthling material. The recording was completed later, potentially for use as a 'B-side', and mixed at Right Track Recording studios, New York in May/June 1997.

'STAY '97' is produced by David Bowie, co-produced by Reeves Gabrels and Mark Plati, and mixed by Mark Plati. The track features Gail Ann Dorsey on bass and vocals, Mike Garson on piano/keyboards, Mark Plati on programming/keyboards, Zachary Alford on drums and Reeves Gabrels on guitar/synths.

DAVID BOWIE 'STAY '97' IS AVAILABLE TO STREAM FRIDAY 24TH JANUARY ON PARLOPHONE.

I CAN'T READ '97 VIDEO
17th January 2020

Check out the official DAVID BOWIE video for 'I Can't Read' directed by TIM POPE filmed in 1997.

'I Can't Read '97' is the second instalment of DAVID BOWIE's - IS IT ANY WONDER? EP of six unreleased and rare tracks being released once a week.

'I Can't Read '97' originally appeared on Tin Machine's eponymous debut album in 1989, and was a staple in the band's live set. In the autumn of 1996, during the mixing stages for Earthling, David re-recorded the track - which, at one stage, appeared on a mastered version of the album.

While the song's second incarnation, 'I Can't Read '97', was David's preferred solo version, it was ultimately cut from Earthling and replaced at the last minute with 'The Last Thing You Should Do'.

This video for 'I Can't Read '97' was shot by Tim Pope shot at rehearsals in Hartford, Connecticut in January 1997.

'I Can't Read '97' written by David Bowie and Reeves Gabrels is produced by David Bowie, co-produced by Reeves Gabrels and Mark Plati, and mixed by Mark Plati. The track was recorded and mixed at Right Track Recording in New York and features Gail Ann Dorsey on bass and vocals, Mike Garson on piano, and Gabrels on guitar and vocals.

DAY IN, DAY OUT
14th January 2020

On this day, 43 years ago, DAVID BOWIE released his Low album. Incorrectly known as the first of the "Berlin Trilogy" it was recorded in France at Chateau d'Herouville studios, located in the Val d'Oise département near Paris. 'New Music: Night And Day' was the original title and initial RCA Canadian cassette tapes made it onto the market with that title printed on the tape before quickly being pulled...

On this day, 46 years ago, DAVID BOWIE was photographed by Kate Simon at Olympic Studios, 117 Church Road, Barnes, West London SW13 9HL in 1974. On this particular day, he records 'Rock & With Me', 'Candidate' and 'Big Brother'...

On this day, 54 years ago, 'Can't Help Thinking About Me' was the first solo release from DAVID BOWIE after changing his stage name. Released on the Pye label (Pye 7N 17020) it was backed by 'And I Say To Myself', both tracks produced by Tony Hatch...

On this day, 55 years ago, DAVID JONES & The Manish Boys audition for Rocky River Promotions at the London Palladium for possible bookings at the Star-Club in Hamburg. Unfortunately, they don't receive an offer to perform there...

REST IN PEACE - BOB SOLLY
13th January 2020

I'm very sad to have to tell you that following a short illness Robert Solly, better known as ex-Manish Boy founder member BOB SOLLY, passed away in London in the early hours of Tuesday morning, January 7th. He was 75.

Following his years with Maidstone based band The Manish Boys (which famously included around a year with DAVID BOWIE fronting the band), Bob continued working as a songwriter with writing partner Paul Rodriguez, mainly working for producer Shel Talmy.

After moving away from the music business he became a very successful designer and architect and spent many years criss-crossing the world while overseeing numerous prestigious commercial property developments. After settling back in the UK he focussed firmly on his real passion in life, collecting; mainly many thousands of records, though his spare rooms quickly filled with, among other things, an impressive first-editions library, items on crime and other rare British social memorabilia and collections of photographs. After many years of serious International record collecting and record dealing it was thought that Bob's vinyl collection alone was second only in size to that of the BBC's. His knowledge of post-war British and American popular music was renown and in the late 90s he became a regular, highly regarded contributor to Record Collector magazine, also writing Record Collector's incisive 2005 book, '100 Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Records'.

In 2009 he began regular radio broadcasts with Channel Radio in Kent, his eclectic weekly show relying solely on vinyl singles chosen from his vast collection. Over the many hundreds of hours broadcasting he never played any single track more than once.

Bob is survived by his second wife, Susan.

Bob Solly (Robert Leslie Solly), musician, designer and writer, born 4th August 1944; died 7th January 2020.

Coumet said that Bowie "had a strong link with the city of lights", and "There will soon be a rue David Bowie in the 13th arrondissement of Paris"

He also confirmed that Bowie's name will be etched onto the major Austerlitz station in the southeast of the French capital, also stated that "the naming must be approved by the Paris council in February" - a formality which never normally encounters any issues.

As you know, Buck played attorney 'Oliver Farnsworth' in The Man Who Fell To Earth movie and also 'Cecil' in The Linguini Incident, alongside DAVID BOWIE.

BOWIEWONDERWORLD IS 23 TODAY
8th January 2020

Little Wonderworld Today is also BowieWonderworld's birthday - now twenty-three years online!

Thank you to everyone who helps support the site - it is appreciated more than you'll ever know :)

For those not aware, this web site was first set up as a 50th birthday present for David.

It started life as Little Wonder, then Little Wonderworld on Virgin Net Freespace. The website name was taken from the name of his secret gig at the Hanover Grand, London back in 1997.

I originally wanted the website name BowieWorld, but David and Ultrastar also wanted that name for a special virtual 3D chatroom BowieWorld he was about to launch. I obviously gave in and promised not to register it, and let them do their thing.

They never registered that domain name as it became part of Worlds.com in the end (and neither did I, keeping my promise). Eventually a Bowie fan in New Zealand did register it and put up some pages.

I patiently waited for the bowieworld.com site to close, and for the domain name to become available again (as the vast majority have over the years) and then claimed it in 2012.

I don't know why I registered it, I've done nothing with it yet. Let's just put it down to sentimental reasons.

STARDUST, RAYGUNS & MOONAGE DAYDREAMS
1st January 2020

Published next week is BOWIE: Stardust, Rayguns & Moonage Daydreams by Michael Allred and Steve Horton.

This 160-page hardcover, published by Insight Editions hits the stores on 7th January.

Bowie: Stardust, Rayguns and Moonage Daydreams Synopsis: Inspired by the one and only superhero, extraterrestrial, and rock and roll deity in history, BOWIE: Stardust, Rayguns & Moonage Daydreams is the original graphic memoir of the great Ziggy Stardust!

In life, David Bowie was one of the most magnetic icons of modern pop culture, seducing generations of fans with both his music and his counterculture persona. In death, the cult of Bowie has only intensified. As a musician alone, Bowie's legacy is remarkable, but his place in the popular imagination is due to so much more than his music. As a visual performer, he defied classification with his psychedelic aesthetics, his larger-than-life image, and his way of hovering on the border of the surreal.

BOWIE: Stardust, Rayguns & Moonage Daydreams chronicles the rise of Bowie's career from obscurity to fame; and paralleled by the rise and fall of his alter ego as well as the rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust. As The Spiders From Mars slowly implode, Bowie wrestles with his Ziggy persona. The outcome of this internal conflict will change not only David Bowie, but also, the world.

About the Authors and Illustrators:

Steve Horton is most recently the author of the graphic novel Satellite Falling (IDW Publishing), which multi-award winning comic writer Jimmy Palmiotti called his "new favorite book". Satellite Falling is currently one issue in, and that first issue sold over 6,000 copies: one of the highest debuts for independent comics in May 2016.

Michael Allred is the artist behind such classic graphic novel works as Madman, Silver Surfer, Red Rocket 7, and iZombie. Michael's work on the eighth volume of the Fables graphic novel landed him on the New York Times best-seller list for graphic fiction for ten weeks in a row. He has been co-creator or substantial contributor to such seminal works as Sandman, Batman '66, X-Force, X-Statix, and iZombie. This last became a TV series on the CW in 2015 and was just renewed for a fourth season.

Laura Allred is an Eisner-winning colorist. She has colored most of Michael Allred's work for decades. Her award came in 2012 for her work coloring iZombie and Madman after two previous nominations, in 1998 for Red Rocket 7 and in 2000 for Madman and Happydale.

Neil Gaiman is a New York Times best-selling author whose work has won countless awards. He is world-renowned for his works, including Sandman, Coraline, American Gods, and Anansi Boys. Recently, Gaiman wrote the critically acclaimed TV miniseries Good Omens, based on the book he co-authored with Terry Pratchett.

You can pre-order BOWIE: Stardust, Rayguns and Moonage Daydreams NOW!
