I COULD PLAY THE WILD MUTATION...
29th January 2021

David Bowie Friars 29th January 1972 Today marks the 49th anniversary of the first ever live performance by DAVID BOWIE as his alter ego 'Ziggy Stardust' at the Borough Assembly Hall (Friars) in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire on 29th January 1972.

This first live gig, after a week's rehearsal at the Royal Ballroom in Tottenham, with the "official" opening gig of the UK tour being on the 10th February at the Toby Jug in Tolworth.

David informs the music press a few days previously that: "Our new stage act will be outrageous, quite outrageous but very theatrical. It's going to be costumed and choreographed, quite different to anything anyone else has tried to do before... No-one has ever seen anything like this before."

The opening act were 'Grand Canyon', who warmed up for David and the as yet unnamed 'Spiders From Mars'. With newly cut and dyed Schwarzkopf red hair and matching red plastic boxing boots, David took the stage sporting a bomber jacket and rolled up trousers, complete with a bulging codpiece a la A Clockwork Orange style... and Ziggy Stardust "the cosmic yob" was born.

His three piece band - Mick Ronson (lead guitar), Trevor Bolder (bass) and Mick 'Woody' Woodmansey (drums) were all togged up in gold outfits but obviously hadn't totally switched over into full on "Martian Spider" mode. Probably with all three feeling rather uncomfortable and not yet fully convinced about this adventure they were about to embark on.

David said: "The Ziggy hair came lock, stock and curler, from the cover of a magazine ('Honey' or the like) and was sported by a model doing a shoot for Kansai Yamamoto's first London show. I couldn't afford the clothes but I could get the hair. Suzi did a straight forward copy. The cut and colour were both Kansai's - Schwarzkopf red was the colour. I had her cut my hair short in early January 1972. No dye. Layed flatish. I believe that it went red and stood up between the 20th and 25th of January 1972, therefore that's when the Kansai show must have been given maximum press."

Originally back in 1969, the Friars Club was started in Aylesbury by a bunch of hippies lead by David Stopps. The very first ever concert they presented was in the New Friarage Hall on 2nd June 1969 and featured Mike Cooper and a band called Mandrake Paddle Steamer. Other acts followed that year including The Pretty Things, King Crimson, Mott The Hoople and a myriad of others. This club was closed down in August 1970 but reopened in April 1971 at a larger venue called the Borough Assembly Hall. Between 1971 and 1975, the Friars presented bands such as David Bowie, Roxy Music, The Velvet Underground, Can, MC5, Mott The Hoople and many more.

Promoter David R. Stopps recalling the Ziggy show said: "I remember him doing 'Rock N' Roll Suicide', maybe for the first time. He shouted at the audience, 'Gimme your hands, 'cos you're wonderful' and nobody got up. In those days they used to sit on the floor, and the stage was reasonably high and somebody got up to give him their hands, but only half-heartedly... I remember thinking, 'Oh that's a strong song, but nobody had heard it.'".

In September 1975, Friars moved yet again to an even larger venue in Aylesbury... the new Aylesbury Civic Centre which was inside the Maxwell Hall, which lasted as a venue until December 1984.

DAVID BOWIE'S CATALOGUE CAMPAIGN
27th January 2021

A DAVID BOWIE article published in today's MUSIC WEEK is: 'David Bowie's catalogue campaign conquers streaming and delivers big physical sales' by Andre Paine...

Five years after the passing of David Bowie, his music continues to resonate with long-term fans and a new generation on streaming services.

As Warner Music's catalogue division Rhino continues its David Bowie campaign in 2021, Music Week has spoken to director of catalogue marketing Stuart Wheeley about the enduring appeal of the iconic artist. The label will be marking further anniversaries for Bowie in the months ahead.

According to Music Week research based on Official Charts Company data, David Bowie sold 282,300 albums in the UK in 2020 across classic catalogue, reissues on vinyl and CD, and new releases targeted at the fanbase.

A coloured vinyl 45th anniversary edition of Station To Station is the latest Bowie album to make a chart impact. The 1976 LP is chasing a Top 20 finish this week.

David Bowie's posthumous collection Legacy led the way in 2020 with sales last year of 109,359 (85,230 from streams and 19,087 physical copies). It was at No.35 in the year's overall album sales. Legacy has sales to date of 587,824 (including 272,733 from streams) and is helping to drive DSP consumption for Bowie, who has 15,632,767 monthly Spotify listeners.

As well as physical sales for new Bowie product, such as the retitled edition of The Man Who Sold The World, his classic albums are performing consistently well on DSPs.

The biggest-selling David Bowie studio album last year was The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars (1972), which moved 23,725 copies (13,470 from streams and 9,372 physical). It has post-1994 OCC sales of 680,150.

Hunky Dory (1971) was the second biggest studio album of 2020 for Bowie, with sales of 14,561 (and post-1994 sales of 519,094). Let's Dance (1983) - co-produced by Bowie and Nile Rodgers - racked up 8,353 sales last year and has a post-1994 tally of 147,655.

Stuart Wheeley: "We are very fortunate to have a great relationship with his estate, and a fantastic A&R team who continue to create quality products that are always well received. The six Brilliant Live Adventures albums, in particular, have been part of a new style of campaign for us; releasing one strictly limited edition album per month for six months as D2C-only exclusives. It's a great way to deliver something unique and interesting to a specific community within his huge fanbase.

"It's certainly going to be another busy year this year as we celebrate a number of key anniversaries on the way towards what would have been David's 75th birthday in 12 months' time."

You can read the rest of the interview and article over at musicweek.com website.

DAY IN, DAY OUT
14th January 2021

On this day, 44 years ago, DAVID BOWIE released his Low album. Incorrectly known as the first of the "Berlin Trilogy" it was recorded in France at Chateau d'Herouville studios, located in the Val d'Oise département near Paris. 'New Music: Night And Day' was the original title and initial RCA Canadian cassette tapes made it onto the market with that title printed on the tape before quickly being pulled. The advertising blurb for the album release stated: 'Two sides of Bowie you've never heard before.'...

On this day, 47 years ago, DAVID BOWIE was photographed by Kate Simon at Olympic Studios, 117 Church Road, Barnes, West London SW13 9HL in 1974. On this particular day, he records 'Rock & With Me', 'Candidate' and 'Big Brother'...

On this day, 55 years ago, 'Can't Help Thinking About Me' was the first solo release from DAVID BOWIE after changing his stage name. Released on the Pye label (Pye 7N 17020) it was backed by 'And I Say To Myself', both tracks produced by Tony Hatch...

On this day, 56 years ago, DAVID JONES & The Manish Boys audition for Rocky River Promotions at the London Palladium for possible bookings at the Star-Club in Hamburg. Unfortunately, they don't receive an offer to perform there...

Beverley Gay was the light of the day in the village of Sunrise
Daffodil hair, powder blue eyes that could snare any stranger

She sang to the tunes of a sad-faced piper called Moon Eyes
And happily sad, he would skip as he played close behind her

Take the valley road, piper take the road through the valley of hopeful
Trail her 'til the morning comes
Run piper run

Take the valley road...

BOWIEWONDERWORLD IS 24 TODAY
8th January 2021

Little Wonderworld Today is also BowieWonderworld's birthday - now twenty-four years online!

Thank you to everyone who helps support the site - it is appreciated more than you'll ever know :)

For those not aware, this web site was first set up as a 50th birthday present for David.

It started life as Little Wonder, then Little Wonderworld on Virgin Net Freespace. The website name was taken from the name of his secret gig at the Hanover Grand, London back in 1997.

I originally wanted the website name BowieWorld, but David and Ultrastar also wanted that name for a special virtual 3D chatroom BowieWorld he was about to launch. I obviously gave in and promised not to register it, and let them do their thing.

They never registered that domain name as it became part of Worlds.com in the end (and neither did I, keeping my promise). Eventually a Bowie fan in New Zealand did register it and put up some pages.

I patiently waited for the bowieworld.com site to close, and for the domain name to become available again (as the vast majority have over the years) and then claimed it in 2012.

I don't know why I registered it, I've done nothing with it yet. Let's just put it down to sentimental reasons.

THE TAO OF BOWIE
7th January 2021

The Tao of Bowie by Mark Edwards Published today is THE TAO OF BOWIE by MARK EDWARDS.

Synopsis: Buddhism was central to David Bowie's life, but he was a wide-ranging thinker who also drew meaning from Jungian psychology, Nietzschean philosophy and Gnosticism. The Tao of Bowie condenses these concepts - the ideas that inspired and supported Bowie throughout his life and career - into twelve powerful lessons, each with a series of exercises, meditations and techniques to encourage readers to apply these learnings to their own lives.

The Tao of Bowie will help readers understand who they really are, clarify their purpose in life, manage their emotions and cope with setbacks and change. This fresh approach to the search for spirituality and happiness unites the perennial human quest for answers with the extraordinary mind and unique career of one of the most important cultural figures of the past half-century.

Book Description: A unique take on mindfulness, meditation and meaning filtered through the life and work of David Bowie.

About the Author: Mark Edwards is a music journalist who has worked for The Face, Arena, Blitz and has written for The Sunday Times every week for the past twenty-five years. BW COMPETITION #32 ENDED
1st January 2021

Bowie Odyssey 70 by Simon Goddard Update: Congratulations to the two winners: Rebecca Pick and David Calderbank.

BW COMPETITION NO. 32 has now ended... here was your chance to win one of two copies of the recently published BOWIE ODYSSEY 70 by SIMON GODDARD.

This beautifully written 192-page book covers the David Bowie period of 1970. I've only just finished reading it myself and I highly recommend it. No wonder it is 'A Sunday Times Book of the Year 2020'. Thoroughly deserved.

Synopsis: He starts the decade a teenage pop idol. But the one-hit wonder who sang 'Space Oddity' is still very far from becoming the star who will one day define the 1970s. Not when he still has a band to find, a manager to sack, a mentally ill brother to save, a wife to marry and a rival called Marc Bolan to beat. Not when David Bowie still has no idea who or what David Bowie is. Starting at the beginning of Bowie's incredible ten-year odyssey changing the course of pop music, Simon Goddard's bold and expressionistic biography weaves time, space, rock 'n' roll and social history to relive Bowie's 1970 moment by vivid moment.

Thank you to everyone who entered this competition. The winner will be announced later this week.

This prize draw was open to all visitors of this website, BW Facebook page likers, BW Facebook Group members and followers on Twitter and Instagram.

This competition ended at midnight (GMT UK time) on Tuesday 29th DECEMBER 2020.

"WILD, FANTASTICAL, EYE-POPPING. A SURREALISTIC TOUR DE FORCE." - Rolling Stone.

David Bowie Lazarus To remember David Bowie on his birthday and to mark the fifth anniversary of his untimely death, producers Robert Fox and RZO Entertainment Inc are exclusively releasing the stream of the London production of Lazarus, captured live on stage. The streaming will be available for three performances only. This will be the UK premiere of the filmed version of this remarkable show.

Lazarus includes songs from Bowie's iconic catalogue as well as new songs written for the stage including the title song, Lazarus.

Inspired by the book, The Man Who Fell To Earth, by Walter Tevis ("The Queen's Gambit") Lazarus focuses on Thomas Newton, as he remains still on Earth - a 'man' unable to die, his head soaked in cheap gin and haunted by a past love. We follow Newton during the course of a few days where the arrival of another lost soul - might finally set him free.

Michael C Hall ("Dexter", "Six Feet Under") stars as Newton, the character famously portrayed by David Bowie in the 1976 screen adaptation of The Man Who Fell To Earth directed by Nicolas Roeg. Lazarus co-stars Sophia Anne Caruso ("Beetlejuice" on Broadway) and the production is directed by Ivo van Hove ("All About Eve", "Network" and "A View From The Bridge").

Lazarus opened at The New York Theatre Workshop in November 2015. The London production opened in November 2016 where it played a sold out run.

This live-streamed event will be available for three performances only in multiple time zones (GMT, AEDT, EST, PST, CST) from Friday 8 to Sunday 10 January 2021.

The Lazarus Cast Album is available on RCA / ISO Records.

STATION TO STATION 45th ANNIVERSARY EDITION
1st January 2021

David Bowie Station To Station 45th Anniversary Edition vinyl The DAVID BOWIE Station To Station (45th Anniversary Edition) is to be released on 22nd January available in random red or white vinyl.

This special limited edition LP is available at 'bricks and mortar' record stores.

Originally released on 23rd January 1976, Station To Station was David Bowie's tenth studio album. To celebrate its 45th anniversary Parlophone is proud to announce a special limited edition 'bricks and mortar' only red and white vinyl pressing of the album.

45 years on from its release 'Station To Station' is now seen as a musical bridge between the 'plastic soul' of 1975's 'Young Americans' and the experimental beginning of Bowie's 'Berlin era' that was 1977's 'Low'.

The album's first single 'Golden Years' was a hit on both sides of the Atlantic and one of five singles released from the six-song album (though the title track was only released on 45 in France and 'Stay' was a single exclusively in the USA).

The tracklsting runs as follows:

SIDE 1:
    Station To Station
    Golden Years
    Word On A Wing

SIDE 2:
    TVC 15
    Stay
    Wild Is The Wind
