Produced by Bowie and longtime collaborator/guitarist Reeves Gabrels, the album will contain such songs as "Thursday's Child," "Survive" and "The Dreamers," as well as "What's Really Happening," the song co-written by Alex Grant, winner of the BowieNet cybersong contest. "What's Really Happening," regarded as the first true cyber-song, was the result of collaborative efforts between Bowie and co-writer Alex Grant, who was one of 80,000 people who submitted lyrics online to the Bug Music-sponsored BowieNet cyber-song contest. Last month, fans around the world were able to watch a live webcast of the recording session on BowieNet, Tunes.com/RollingStone.com and the Lucent Technologies FullView web site, as Bowie laid down the song tracks with Grant and his friend singing background. This event marked the first-ever public webcast using the 360-degree FullView camera, invented at Bell Labs, the research and development arm of Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU). According to Bowie, "The most gratifying part of the evening for me was being able to encourage Alex and his pal Larry to sing on the song that he, Alex, had written. It was a cool way to finish the session off." The mysteriously titled "hours..." features: Bowie, vocals, keyboard and 12-string acoustic guitar; Reeves Gabrels, electric and acoustic guitars, keyboard and programming; Mark Plati, bass, acoustic and electric 12-string guitar, keyboard and drum programming; and Mike Levesque (Dave Navarro Band), drums. Thursday, June 24th at 8:00 p.m. (EST); Friday, June 25th at 1.00 a.m. (GMT); Thursday, June 24th at 5:00 p.m. (PST) . Plati is a producer, engineer and musician based in New York City. He has been a musician since the age of 11, studying bass with Duke Ellington's nephew in high school and a variety of instruments at Indiana University. He came to New York in 1987 and began working with dance music legend Arthur Baker as an engineer, synthesizer programmer and mixer. In 1990 he worked with Prince on the Graffiti Bridge soundtrack, and from there began to move more into rock and mainstream record production. Working with the Poppies in 1991 brought Mark to The Looking Glass Studios, and after that experience he began to make the studio his base, recording there with artists such as David Bowie, The Cure, Duncan Sheik and Deee-Lite, to name a few. His philosophy is that anything goes in the studio, and has been quoted as saying he likes to make records out of 'junk'. He is also an avid cyclist (often mistaken for a bike messenger). According to one source who heard the material developed with Reeves Gabrels - guitarist in Tin Machine - "it sounds like early Bowie mixed with the best ideas from Tin Machine." The source adds, "The vocals are more distinctive, there are singles and it sounds like a band he's not going for the younger listener the way he did with his last drum & bass material." Bowie, who has technically been without a deal in the UK since his last album Earthling on BMG in 1997, is understood to be keen to sign with Virgin, which already releases him in the US. David said: "Chris will have his own little mountain from where he'll control computers, samples, loops, some keyboards, (I'll be doing some of that... and, I hope, Gail will too) and supplying tabular acoustic and nose bleedingly hostile electric guitar". The singles are being made available in both a 3 x 7" vinyl box set and a 3 x CD box set. It was in 1966 that David changed his name to Bowie to avoid being confused with Davey Jones of The Monkees. It was also the year that he signed to Pye as a solo artist. The material contained within the singles was self-penned and demonstrates the influence that blues and RnB music had on the young Bowie. There is also very definite evidence of the then prevalent mod style, also apparent in his attire as illustrated on the artwork. Although, much greater things were yet to come, this set nevertheless documents an important milestone in the long and varied career of David Bowie. Disc One (Ed. Notes: The CD set comes with a 12-page booklet... and the 7" set comes with a fold-open poster-style insert. Each picture sleeve has a contemporary '60s shot on one side... designed by Hugh Gilmour at 'Essential'... and an original early 70s Pye picture sleeve on the reverse... i.e. the Spanish Pye sleeve and the two Japanese Pye sleeves. Both sets are housed in a colour box (Sequel). - Released tomorrow 21st June 1999). Faces' drummer KENNEY JONES has ambitious plans to turn it into a full-length animation feature film. The project, which has been simmering on the back-burner now for several years, is now almost ready to come into fruition. Uli Meyer who did 'Space Jam' and 'Aladdin' movies is to be the animator, as well as top English illustrator Una Woodruff. Jones has firm ideas about the actors he wants involved in the project: "PHIL COLLINS is going to do lead voiceover. He's a bit of a Cockney. He's going to play 'Happiness Sam'. I'd like ROBIN WILLIAMS to do Stanley Unwin's bit." And Jones has a role for DAVID BOWIE - "I haven't asked him yet, but when we first started, David Jones - as he was called then - was a folk singer. We used to take him to the gigs with us. He was like a fifth member of the Small Faces. I want him to sing the voice of the fly. He'd be stunning. Also, 'The Journey' is very Beatley. It would be nice if I got Ringo, Paul and George to come into the studio and do that track with Bowie as well." As well as the six original album songs, Jones has unearthed a previously unheard backing track from those sessions: "The seven tracks will be rearranged, and five new songs will complete the story." Of those new songs, PETE TOWNSHEND has expressed an interest in the composing role. Shooting will began the moment he's finds the right writer. Jones says: "It's very important for me to get somebody who sees 'Ogden's' the way I do. Townshend sees it completely, and he's champing at the bit - but he can't write the songs until the story is finished!".THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD 13th June 1999 June release from Castle Music is the album THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD by LULU (Cat no. NEMCD 423), which features 'The Man Who Sold The World' and 'Watch That Man', which DAVID BOWIE produced, played and provided backing vocals, along with MICK RONSON www.castlemusic.comJOE ELLIOTT Q INTERVIEW 13th June 1999 Snippets from a JOE ELLIOTT interview by Q Magazine this month: "What's your most treasured material possession? Sean played piano with the British rock n' roll group FUMBLE - back in the Ziggy days in 1973 they toured as support for David in Britain and America. He got a call to do the backing on "Heroes" on Top Of The Pops. After the session David mentioned to him that he'd be touring the following year and he invited Sean to be part of the band. Sean also played on David's 'Lodger' album in 1979. Sean's diary/book was part serialised in the 'Starzone' UK Bowie fanzine quite a few years back, September 1984 to be precise. An wonderful and interesting read to say the least. Extracts:'Some bird called Coco called,' my flatmate told me when I got in late one night. 'No, she didn't leave a message,' My heart jumped - a bird called Coco is David Bowie's personal assistant, and I had been anxiously awaiting this call for over a month. She did finally catch up with me. Sean sadly passed away aged forty-nine on 29th May at St. Mary's Hospital in London after an Aids-related illness. EXHUMING MR. RICE AT CANNES 3rd June 1999 Correspondent MARGARET BREAM reports: CANNES, France - DAVID BOWIE put on 348 years to play the title role in 'EXHUMING MR. RICE' a new film that screened last month at the Cannes International Film Festival. The 52-year-old, chameleon-like musician plays 400-year-old Mr. Rice, who helps a cancer-stricken 12-year-old boy search for a magical elixir. "I thought (the script) was charming, compassionate, touching and very well-written," Bowie said in a statement. "I really wanted to be part of it." But it wasn't easy for the film-makers to get the script to Bowie, who has acted in more than thirty films since making his screen debut in the 1976 sci-fi movie "The Man Who Fell To Earth." "(It) involved going through a lot of gatekeepers," said Colleen Nystedt, the movie's producer. Bowie said he doesn't go looking for scripts. "They seem to find their way to me," he said. "Every now and again, a script will come along that really touches me for some reason or another, or there will be somebody attached to it that I want to work with. I tend to find myself in films for those conditions." In the low-budget Canadian film, written by J.H. Wyman (a pseudonym for Joel Wyner), Bowie plays a kindly man who lives next door to 12-year-old Owen (played by 14-year-old Bill Switzer), who lives fearfully in death's shadow. Bowie's Mr. Rice, who doesn't have much time left himself, wants Owen to throw off the fear that paralyses him and start living life more fully. Rice eventually leads Owen on a hunt for a magical potion that will give the person who drinks it one full life. It was one of about 600 films that screened at the prestigious Cannes festival, which ran May 12th-23rd. Bowie, who plays his role with a shy smile and uplifted eyebrows, said people will connect with the story because it concerns illness, which touches almost everyone in some way. His character shares with the 12-year-old boy the key to spiritual life. As for the glowing, bright blue magic potion that ends up saving both their lives, Bowie said he wouldn't mind getting his thin white paws on some. "I haven't come across (anything like it) in 30 years of rock 'n' roll," he said. "It would fetch a mean street price, I'll tell you, if you could get some." None of Bowie's music appears in the movie, shot in and around Vancouver, British Columbia, and directed by Nicholas Kendall. The movie uses original music by Simon Kendall - his pan-flute melodies recall the score to "Titanic" - along with songs by Tom Cochrane, Sharkskin and the Creators.
