AND THE BITS FLEW FAR AND WIDE...
28th September 2010

Good news to report that the DAVID BOWIE plaque in Beckenham outside the former Three Tuns public house is to be finally reinstated...

The long-standing charity CENTREPOINT that helps homeless youths in the United Kingdom, is receiving help via a benefit album '1969: Key To Change' by a whole host of music stars performing songs from 1969, the year the charity was founded. GET CAPE. WEAR CAPE. FLY (aka Sam Duckworth and his band) has recorded the DAVID BOWIE classic 'Space Oddity'. Other musicians and singers appearing on the album include Johnny Marr, Chris Difford, Ian Brown, Hard-Fi, Mick Hucknall, Speech Debelle, Jools Holland and Ruby Turner, Frank Turner, Kevin and Galen Ayers, Pleasure Mob and Bad Lieutenant...

As mentioned on here last February, the BING CROSBY Archive have dug deep into their vaults to release a treasure trove of rare and unreleased material all ready for the Christmas market. There is a limited-edition 7& red vinyl single of the DAVID BOWIE duet 'Peace On Earth'/'Little Drummer Boy' backed with a 1953 Bing Crosby/Ella Fitzgerald duet of 'White Christmas'...

Best of all on 9th November there on is Bing Crosby: The Television Specials, Volume 2 DVD Region 1 (U.S. and Canada only) debut of Bing Crosby's Merrie Olde Christmas, which features the iconic duet. All four specials are presented in their original uncut form which presumably means that David's solo performance of "Heroes" is included. The Los Angeles Chronicle have gone into major detail about each of the releases... I guess you should read about it there - [Read here]...

CRITERION RELEASE MCML
28th September 2010

Criterion Collection Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence THE CRITERION COLLECTION have just released #535 which is the excellent 'Mr Christmas Mr. Lawrence' which stars DAVID BOWIE as 'Jack Celliers'.

The newly restored high-definition master movie is released on DVD and Blu-ray today (Region 1 U.S. and Canada only).

In this captivating, exhilarating skewed World War II drama from Nagisa Oshima, David Bowie regally embodies the character Celliers, a high-ranking British officer interned by the Japanese as a POW. Music star Ryuichi Sakamoto (who also composed this film's hypnotic score) plays the camp commander, who becomes obsessed with the mysterious blond major, while Tom Conti is British Lieutenant Colonel Mr. Lawrence, who tries to bridge the emotional and language divides between his captors and fellow prisoners. Also featuring actor-director Takeshi Kitano in his first dramatic role, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence is a multi layered, brutal, at times erotic tale of culture clash that was one of Oshima's greatest successes.

Disc Features:
New, restored high-definition master (with DTS-HD Master Audio on the Blu-ray edition).
The Oshima Gang, an original making-of featurette.
New video interviews with producer Jeremy Thomas, screenwriter Paul Mayersberg, actor Tom Conti and actor-composer Ryuichi Sakamoto.
Hasten Slowly, an hour-long documentary about author Laurens van der Post, whose autobiographical novel is the basis for the film.
   Original theatrical trailer.
PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by film writer Chuck Stephens and a 1983 interview with director Oshima by film writer Tadao Sato.

You can purchase Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence: (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray] NOW and save 26%.

WE SAW A MINOTAUR
27th September 2010

Two privately-owned DAVID BOWIE prints are available for the art collectors out there, to be sold either as a pair or separately.

They are both from the split set 4 of the 14 sets of We Saw A Minotaur - A New Play By Joni Ve Sadd

We Saw A Minotaur - A New Play By Joni Ve Sadd: A Prelimary Sketch and The Complete Text prints by David Bowie Both are numbered 4/14 as both are from set 4 of 14 sets. They are dated 1994 and signed by his Rockgodliness!

As you might be aware, there were 14 sets of 17 prints and set 4 was deliberately split and framed at the instruction of David Bowie and his art dealer Kate Chertavian.

The fact that one day someone might want to collect them all would bump up value if you are buying for an investment. They are really beautiful to just treasure which was my intention, but alas fate the bounder has decided I have to sell.

They are titled (embossed) 'A Preliminary Sketch' and 'The Complete Text'.

'The Complete Text' is a crouching minotaur and is really beautiful, the other 'A Preliminary Sketch' is small black and white images similar to something a design artist or photographer would produce for an example layout board.

The photographs obviously don't do justice to the quality of the prints with the colour much more vibrant, its just the light I took them in.

The prints are available at £750 for EACH plus postage (as these will be valuable one day when someone wants to collect the set). As I SAY I will SPLIT them if necessary.

Proud Galleries are launching an exhibition featuring rare and unseen photographs of DAVID BOWIE.

The exhibition starts on Thursday 28th October through to Sunday 5th December 2010.

PROUD CAMDEN presents ANY DAY NOW: DAVID BOWIE - THE LONDON YEARS (1947-1974), an exclusive photographic portrait of the icon's formative years in London, in conjunction with the publication of the book of the same title. This exhibition charts the rise of one of the most influential artists of our time, David Bowie, from his birth in London in 1947 to the height of his success in 1974 with the release of his album Diamond Dogs - and his departure from the UK.

Changing his name from David Jones to Davy Jones to David Bowie and emerging as the icon Ziggy Stardust, this exhibition is an insight into the early Bowie whose distinctive voice, style and quintessential Englishness bear testimony to his enduring appeal.

Including rare and unseen portraits from photographers including Terry O'Neill, Ray Stevenson, Geoff MacCormack, David Bebbington, Jak Kilby and Bob Solly among others; this exhibition provides an insider's view into the early years of one of the most successful and stylish recording artists of all time who has sold over 136 million albums since his rise to success in the late 1960s.

Proud Galleries is launching this exhibition in conjunction with the publication of 'Any Day Now: David Bowie - The London Years (1947-1974)' by Kevin Cann, co-curator of the exhibition.

Any Day Now, published by Adelita Ltd. Spec: 336pp, paperback, 280mm x 230mm, RRP £24.99.

Proud Galleries are located at The Horse Hospital, Stables Market, Chalk Farm Road, London NW1.

STATION TO STATION OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE
23rd September 2010

DAVID BOWIE - 'STATION TO STATION'
Special and Deluxe editions

Including previously unreleased and much sought-after concert 'Live Nassau Coliseum 1976'
Release date: 27th September 2010 (28th North America)
Plus new sleevenotes by Cameron Crowe.

EMI are excited to announce the release of a 3-CD Special Edition and 5-CD, DVD and heavyweight vinyl Deluxe Edition of David Bowie's hugely influential 1976's album, Station To Station.

"The return of The Thin White Duke..."

So begins David Bowie's 10th studio album. In part influenced by his role in Nicolas Roeg's film The Man Who Fell To Earth, ever the innovator, Bowie became the character The Thin White Duke; a composite, part his character from the film, alien Thomas Jerome Newton, part Buster Keaton and part European cabaret artist.

After the release of 1975's soul and funk-inspired Young Americans album, Bowie and the album's guitarist Carlos Alomar, Earl Slick (guitar), the E-Street Band's Roy Bittan (piano), Dennis Davis (drums), George Murray (bass) and Warren Peace (backing vocals) entered Cherokee Studios in Los Angeles to record its follow up. Touching on his love of German electronic bands, American R&B and even film music plus the talents of his American band, Bowie crafted an album drawing on both European and American sensibilities; a transition between his recent Plastic Soul period and what would become his re-acquaintance with European culture when he moved to Berlin the following year.

The opening 10-minute title track leaves the listener in no doubt that another ground-breaking Bowie transformation is taking place. From the sound of a moving train and two-note intro, through the introduction and intention of The Thin White Duke - taking in Crowley, Cocaine and Kabbalah and Romanticism - the song is a piece of paranoid and dislocated electronic-funk. This is followed by the distinctive UK and US Top 10 single Golden Years, which hints at the funk and soul of his previous album, though a more regretful lyric urges the listener to "run for the shadows." Word On A Wing is the first of the album's two ballads, with a decidedly Christian theme - a song which in later years Bowie said was something of a cry for help. The back-to-back TVC15 and Stay provide the album with a funkier feel, the former having said to have been influenced by being sprawled in front of a dozen TV monitors and a dream about a girlfriend being eaten by a TV set. A great admirer of Nina Simone's version of the song, the album's second ballad and final track is a cover of Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington's ballad Wild Is The Wind, generally considered an inspired and classic Bowie vocal performance.

Station To Station was a top 5 success in the UK and US. It would, as many commentators said, divide the decade for Bowie. He thereafter left the US for Berlin with Iggy Pop and embarked on a journey which saw the creation of his seminal Berlin Trilogy, as well as playing a major role in Iggy's acclaimed The Idiot and Lust For Life albums.

You can pre-order both releases now.

As Echo Bowie singer Hans says: "We just finished the Festival Tour, but we're already looking forward to playing all those great songs by Bowie again. It's our mission to keep this music alive. We're fans ourselves. And then there's some nice Bowie stuff coming up, like the Station To Station re-release. In Holland the popular band Moke will release their version of Bowie's 'Survive' as their new single. These are nice reasons to feature lots of 'Station To Station' stuff, and maybe we'll put 'Survive' back in. We played that beautiful song regularly some years ago. Although it's not very well known, the audience response was always great and emotional."

60 SECOND INTERVIEW
1st September 2010

DJ MARK RADCLIFFE gets the 60 second interview treatment in today's METRO newspaper...

One of the questions asked... In your autobiography, 'Thank You For The Days', you describe the most memorable days of your life. If you could relive one, which would you pick?

'I would have to choose meeting DAVID BOWIE. I first heard his music when I was 14 and it encapsulated everything that was great about rock 'n' roll. Bowie seemed so remote and glamorous he was like an alien from a far different planet. The world he occupied seemed entirely removed from the world of someone going to school doing their O-levels in Bolton. So to then meet him and know him - and I can still e-mail him now and he'll reply - just seems so far away from how I ever saw my life panning out.'

You can read the complete interview over at the metro.co.uk website.
