Just published is ALL THAT GLITTERS: THE AVA CHERRY STORY by Ava Cherry and Lisa Torem.
Former fashion model, charismatic vocalist and devoted lover of DAVID BOWIE during his 1970s golden era, Chicago-born Ava Cherry waited for just the right moment to tell her story, and that moment is now...
All That Glitters begins with Ava's musical inspirations, family allegiances, Catholic education and reaction to living on Chicago's South Side. Donning faded denim and "lots of fringe" during her early teen years, she frequents the all-black, opulent Regal Theater, where she dreams about performing live after watching Aretha Franklin and Michael Jackson. The free-spirited Ava finds an early path into the world of fashion and entertainment as a young model.
Fast forward to a New York after-party, where Ava's then-manager introduces her to flame-haired David Bowie; he's instantly attracted to Ava's short-cropped, dyed hair and down-to-earth persona. What he doesn't suspect is that Ava has spent hours staring at the rock star's image on the Ziggy Stardust cover while dropping the needle on each track and memorizing all the lyrics.
Bowie notices something else: When entering the club Genesis, Ava, along with A-lister celebrities, had broken into song, so it was only natural that the still-rising star would ask her, "Can you sing?" While singing wasn't exactly Ava's major career goal, she instinctively nods yes.
Bowie asks Ava to tour in Japan with his backing band, The Spiders From Mars. She hurriedly packs up her apartment, gives notice to her employer and says goodbye to her parents, but when a telegram from Bowie's camp arrives alerting her that the tour had fallen through, Ava sets into place an intrepid plan...
Ultimately, Ava and Bowie have a multi-year affair during which time Ava influences Bowie's own career vis a vis trips to New York's Apollo Theater, thereby setting the stage for the award-winning Young Americans project. During this time, she also befriends young backup singer Luther Vandross.
In the 1980s, Ava becomes a Versace-clad international backing singer for Vandross. Life is exciting, but rehearsals prove grueling. The pressure to succeed is on, as Ava feels constantly judged by her contemporaries-she sweats bullets when Diana Ross occupies a front row seat. On the other hand, Ava enjoys mentoring the likes of a young Whitney Houston.
Finally, Ava returns home to embark on her debut recording project, Ripe, helmed by producer Curtis Mayfield (Super Fly). She then works on the follow-up, Streetcar Named Desire, with producer Bob Esty (Bette Midler, The Pointer Sisters, Barbra Streisand, Donna Summer). While Ava is grateful for the opportunity to work with such gifted producers, there is a dark side; she sadly discovers that talent is not enough-Ava faces discrimination on the airwaves and her solo career struggles.
Throughout this memoir, Ava recounts fascinating tales of memorable times spent in the orbit of a multitude of artists such as Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, The Rolling Stones, John Lennon and Yoko Ono and Bob Marley, among many others. She also has a heartwarming moment with Frank Sinatra and a humorous encounter in England with the Queen Mother.
What will quickly become apparent to the reader is Ava's resilience, as she branches out into rap and contemporary dance music. Ava's appearances at major Bowie fests and museum exhibits around the world keep her name front and center in the post-Bowie/Vandross years.
As Ava's contemporary dance records continue to soar up the international charts, she enjoys reconnecting with her longtime fans as well as inspiring the next generation of artists.
Reviews: "A muse to as well as a long-term lover of David Bowie, singer and fashion icon Ava Cherry, despite her influence, has been until now one of the more neglected characters in his colourful history. Her refreshingly down-to-earth and unpretentious memoir (co-written with Lisa Torem) is an illuminating and inspiring account of the 1970s and 1980s rock and soul scenes and beyond." - John Clarkson, Editor, pennyblackmusic
"Ava Cherry is the power behind the throne. They called it 'plastic soul' but this was authenticity based on the fact that Luther Vandross and Ava Cherry were there. Young Americans was one of the top albums of my youth." - Joe Shanahan, Founder, METRO.
"It's tough to survive in the Music Business. To be able to thrive and still be performing and making music after nearly 50 years in the Business is absolutely phenomenal. Long Live Ava Cherry!" - Tony Zanetta, former executive of MainMan
"Ava's record, to me, was a crossover smash. It was called Streetcar Named Desire and I thought it was absolutely terrific. I loved it." - Bobby Colomby, producer, former A&R executive at Capitol Records and former drummer of Blood, Sweat and Tears
"We, Sigma Kids, had front row seats to the Young Americans release. All That Glitters has the details... David definitely loved Ava's sense of style! How amazing it must have been for Ava to share her clothes with David! After nearly fifty years, five decades, still being in touch with Ava is a gift! There will always be a soul connection with David, Ava, the Sigma Kids and Philly!" - Marla Kanevsky, 'Sigma Kid'

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the first ever live performance by DAVID BOWIE as his alter ego 'Ziggy Stardust' at the Borough Assembly Hall (Friars) in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire on 29th January 1972.
This first live gig, after a week's rehearsal at the Royal Ballroom in Tottenham, with the "official" opening gig of the UK tour being on the 10th February at the Toby Jug in Tolworth.
David informs the music press a few days previously that: "Our new stage act will be outrageous, quite outrageous but very theatrical. It's going to be costumed and choreographed, quite different to anything anyone else has tried to do before... No-one has ever seen anything like this before."
The opening act were 'Grand Canyon', who warmed up for David and the as yet unnamed 'Spiders From Mars'. With newly cut and dyed Schwarzkopf red hair and matching red plastic boxing boots, David took the stage sporting a bomber jacket and rolled up trousers, complete with a bulging codpiece a la A Clockwork Orange style... and Ziggy Stardust "the cosmic yob" was born.
His three piece band - Mick Ronson (lead guitar), Trevor Bolder (bass) and Mick 'Woody' Woodmansey (drums) were all togged up in gold outfits but obviously hadn't totally switched over into full on "Martian Spider" mode. Probably with all three feeling rather uncomfortable and not yet fully convinced about this adventure they were about to embark on.
David said: "The Ziggy hair came lock, stock and curler, from the cover of a magazine ('Honey' or the like) and was sported by a model doing a shoot for Kansai Yamamoto's first London show. I couldn't afford the clothes but I could get the hair. Suzi did a straight forward copy. The cut and colour were both Kansai's - Schwarzkopf red was the colour. I had her cut my hair short in early January 1972. No dye. Layed flatish. I believe that it went red and stood up between the 20th and 25th of January 1972, therefore that's when the Kansai show must have been given maximum press."
Originally back in 1969, the Friars Club was started in Aylesbury by a bunch of hippies lead by David Stopps. The very first ever concert they presented was in the New Friarage Hall on 2nd June 1969 and featured Mike Cooper and a band called Mandrake Paddle Steamer. Other acts followed that year including The Pretty Things, King Crimson, Mott The Hoople and a myriad of others. This club was closed down in August 1970 but reopened in April 1971 at a larger venue called the Borough Assembly Hall. Between 1971 and 1975, the Friars presented bands such as David Bowie, Roxy Music, The Velvet Underground, Can, MC5, Mott The Hoople and many more.
Promoter David R. Stopps recalling the Ziggy show said: "I remember him doing 'Rock N' Roll Suicide', maybe for the first time. He shouted at the audience, 'Gimme your hands, 'cos you're wonderful' and nobody got up. In those days they used to sit on the floor, and the stage was reasonably high and somebody got up to give him their hands, but only half-heartedly... I remember thinking, 'Oh that's a strong song, but nobody had heard it.'".
In September 1975, Friars moved yet again to an even larger venue in Aylesbury... the new Aylesbury Civic Centre which was inside the Maxwell Hall, which lasted as a venue until December 1984.

MONORAY (part of the Octopus Publishing Group) has announced today that it will publish DAVID BOWIE RAINBOWMAN 1967-1980, by JÉRÔME SOLIGNY, a meticulously detailed history of the moments that shaped Bowie's musical career told by the people who were actually 'in the room' with him.
The book will be released on 8th September 2022 - the year of the 50th anniversary of the release of 'The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars'. Published in France in 2019 as the first of two volumes, it is appearing now in English for the very first time.
This uniquely exhaustive work on Bowie's 1967-1980 albums draws on over 150 extensive interviews with some of the most significant people in David Bowie's life - the musicians, producers and friends who knew Bowie best, including Ken Scott, Hermione Farthingale, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, George Underwood, Mick Ronson, Carlos Alomar, Trevor Bolder, Mike Garson, Woody Woodmansey and many, many others.
Hermione Farthingale calls it 'a book unlike any other, the definitive analysis of David's music, told in a quiet natural way, but with absolute authenticity, by the people around him'.
Tony Visconti says 'Jérôme Soligny is one of the best authorities in the world of David Bowie's career and life in general... His new biography Rainbowman is a thorough and honest account of the great man'. According to Tony Visconti, Jérôme Soligny was David Bowie's favourite French journalist and over 25 years, he spent time getting to know the artist and his fellow musicians.
With an essay by Soligny on each album, followed by oral histories from the most trusted and influential figures in Bowie's musical life, David Bowie Rainbowman: 1967-1980 is the definitive guide to the musical development of a singular and mercurial genius - the Rainbowman himself.
The essential book is completed by a foreword by Tony Visconti and an introduction by Mike Garson, with a cover photo by Mick Rock, and an iconic cover design by Barnbrook.
Jérôme Soligny is a musician, writer and journalist based in Le Havre, France. Over the course of 25 years, Jérôme spoke with Bowie many times, and interviewed him on numerous occasions for Rock&Folk magazine. He was presented with the Chevalier des Arts et Lettres by Tony Visconti in 2019 and is described by Bryan Ferry as 'one of the great French authorities on contemporary music'.
Jake Lingwood, Publisher said "Rainbowman is a staggering work that is already absolutely essential for Bowie fans who can read French. It's now such a thrill to bring this to English speaking readers around the world for the very first time. Just a word of warning though - it's HUGE, clocking in at almost 300,000 words, so you might want to book some reading time off work in September 2022 when the book is released!"
Jérôme Soligny said "It's an honour and privilege for me to realise that Rainbowman is going to be published in English, the language of rock music and also David Bowie's. The whole project took five years of my life, but as my closest friend say 'There was 40 years of passion before this'. I hope the true lovers of David's music will be as happy to read the book as I've been to write it. Sure, Rainbowman is a heavy brick of paper full of information but also a tribute to musicians and music people - famous and those who stayed in the shadow - who helped David craft his songs and albums. Funnily enough, it's a musician who brought me to Monoray and no, it can't be chance. Some things are written in the stars."
David Bowie Rainbowman 1967-1980, by Jérôme Soligny, will be published on September 8th and is available to pre-order NOW!

Taking place next month is BOWIE, CAMBO & ALL THE HYPE - An Evening with John 'Cambo' Cambridge by Walthamstow Rock 'n' Roll Book Club.
About this event: Bowie, Cambo & All the Hype traces the extraordinary and pivotal friendship between David Bowie and drummer John Cambridge, from the time when Bowie made his first major career breakthrough in 1969 to his death from cancer in 2016.
Drummer, musician and friend John 'Cambo' Cambridge lived with Bowie at Haddon Hall when he had his first hit record 'Space Oddity' and toured with him in Junior's Eyes. He was there for him at many key moments - when Bowie lost his father, passed his driving test, played his first Glam Rock gig with Hype, even acting as best man when Bowie married Angela Barnett in 1970. And if John had not persuaded his former Rats colleague Mick Ronson to join Bowie in February 1970, there might never have been a Ziggy Stardust or the stellar career which followed.
At this special evening with John Cambridge, the author of Bowie, Cambo & All The Hype, we get a backstage pass to key people and events during those crucial early years and will hear, up close and in person, the heartfelt stories of this unique friendship.
John will be in conversation with Garry Burnett and will share with us some rare and special memorabilia.
Venue: William The Fourth, 816 High Road, Leyton, London, E10 6AE.
Date: 21st February at 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm GMT.
Tickets for this event are on sale now via eventbrite.com

Incredibly sad news to read that legendary photographer STEVE SCHAPIRO has passed away on Saturday, aged 87.
Steve's photographic career is legendary and historic. He covered the civil rights movement and shot iconic portraits of Muhammad Ali, Barbra Streisand, Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, DAVID BOWIE and many other luminaries during his long career.
Of the 1974 shoot with David Bowie, Steve told Associated Press, 'I didn't know what to expect with Bowie. I anticipated he was going to be flamboyant and that he would come with a big entourage. Bowie was quite spiritual and very serious. We had set up lights at nine in the morning and he finally came at four in the afternoon. He immediately borrowed a cropped neck shirt from one of my assistants and went into the dressing room. He came back 20 minutes later and he had painted white stripes on the shirt, his pants and I think he had even painted his toes white. He started making these circles and drawings on the background paper and on the background paper on the floor he drew a diagram of the tree of life, a Kabbalah diagram. He was very, very serious and I think that shoot was trying out different characterisations to see which [one] might be another personae he could take on. The interesting thing in terms of the stripes, which is the cover of my [2016] Bowie book is that he only used an outfit like that one other time, which was in his last video (Lazarus). So, it's a very spiritual thing. The day he wore it with me he was in a very spiritual mood during the Kabbalah images. Then, of course, he was very spiritual just before he knew he was going to die.'

As worldwide celebrations mark what would have been DAVID BOWIE's 75th birthday (January 8th), Sag Harbor Cinema hosts a rare screening of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars, D.A. Pennebaker's film of David Bowie's legendary final performance as Ziggy Stardust, held at the Hammersmith Odeon on July 3, 1973.
Part of the yearlong retrospective created by the Cinema to celebrate the work of D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus, the special screening will offer the audience an exclusive opportunity to see the film in a 35mm print from the filmmakers' personal collection.
David Bowie's final electrifying performance as Ziggy Stardust in 1973 at London's Hammersmith Odeon Theatre. The feature length film captures the aura surrounding one of the most unusual stars of the contemporary music scene.
Framed by a smattering of behind-the-scenes footage, the bulk of the film concerns the actual concert, notable as the final time that Bowie would perform under the Ziggy Stardust persona, an announcement that, at the time, led many fans to mistakenly believe Bowie was retiring altogether.
Venue: 90 Main Street, Sag Harbor 11963, New York.

'Twenty-five years pass him, like an evening at the circus'...
Today is also BowieWonderworld's birthday - now twenty-five years online!
Thank you to everyone who helps support the site - it is appreciated more than you'll ever know :)
For those not aware, this web site was first set up as a 50th birthday present for David.
It started life as Little Wonder, then Little Wonderworld on Virgin Net Freespace. The website name was taken from the name of his secret gig at the Hanover Grand, London back in 1997.
I originally wanted the website name BowieWorld, but David and Ultrastar also wanted that name for a special virtual 3D chatroom BowieWorld he was about to launch. I obviously gave in and promised not to register it, and let them do their thing.
They never registered that domain name as it became part of Worlds.com in the end (and neither did I, keeping my promise). Eventually a Bowie fan in New Zealand did register it and put up some fan pages.
I patiently waited for the bowieworld.com site to close, and for the domain name to become available again and then claimed it in 2012.
I don't know why I registered it, I've done nothing with it yet. Let's just put it down to sentimental reasons.

Released today is DAVID BOWIE TOY:BOX which is available as a three CD set and six 10" Vinyl formats.
TOY:BOX is a special edition of the unreleased TOY album. The 'capture the moment' approach of the recording sessions are extended to the sleeve artwork designed by Bowie featuring a photo of him as a baby with a contemporary face. The package also contains a 16-page full-colour book featuring previously unseen photographs by Frank Ockenfels 3. TOY was recorded following David's Glastonbury 2000 performance. Bowie entered the studio with his band to record new interpretations of songs he'd first recorded from 1964-1971. The plan was to record the album 'old school' with the band playing live, choose the best takes and then release it as soon as humanly possible. Unfortunately, in 2001 the concept of the 'surprise drop' album release and the technology to support it were still quite a few years off, making it impossible to release TOY at the time.
Included in TOY:BOX is a second CD/set of 10"s of alternative mixes and versions including proposed B-Sides (versions of David's debut single 'Liza Jane' and 1967's 'In The Heat Of The Morning'), later mixes by Tony Visconti and the 'Tibet Version' of 'Silly Boy Blue' recorded at The Looking Glass Studio at the time of the 2001 Tibet House show in New York featuring Philip Glass on piano and Moby on guitar.
The third CD/set of 10"s features 'Unplugged & Somewhat Slightly Electric' mixes of thirteen TOY tracks. Producer Mark Plati "While we were recording the basic tracks Earl Slick suggested that he and I overdub acoustic guitars on all the songs. He said this was a Keith Richards' trick, sometimes these guitars would be a featured part of the track, and at other times they'd be more subliminal. Later while mixing, David heard one of the songs broken down to just vocals and acoustic guitars; this gave him the idea that we ought to do some stripped-down mixes like that and that maybe one day they'd be useful. Once we put a couple of other elements in the pot, it felt like it could be a completely different record. I was only too happy to finish that thought some two decades after the fact."
The Toy:Box 3-CD and Toy:Box six-10" Vinyl are both available to purchase now!
Also released today is the Hunky Dory Limited Edition 50th Anniversary Vinyl Picture Disc which can also be purchased now.
Check out the official DAVID BOWIE lyric video for Shadow Man (Unplugged & Somewhat Slightly Electric Mix).
Tomorrow (7th January) sees the next streaming single release on ISO Records via Parlophone - 'Shadow Man (Unplugged & Somewhat Slightly Electric Mix)' / 'Shadow Man (Early Version)' TOY 2 (TOY 2A).
ISO Records/Parlophone Records are proud to announce the release of SHADOW MAN (UNPLUGGED & SOMEWHAT SLIGHTLY ELECTRIC MIX), which is a stripped-down mix of a re-recording of a song David Bowie initially recorded in late 1970. SHADOW MAN appears on the album TOY, which features in the DAVID BOWIE 5. BRILLIANT ADVENTURE (1992-2001) boxset and the Unplugged & Somewhat Slightly Electric Mix is on CD3/10" #2 in the TOY (TOY:BOX) boxsets which are both available from 7th January.
The 'unplugged' studio recording is coupled with an early studio demo version recorded in the closing months of 1970 - not recorded during the Ziggy Stardust album sessions as often stated, and is exclusive to this single.
Bowie initially recorded SHADOW MAN in late 1970, once more in Autumn 1971 and then thirty years later for the legendary 'lost' album TOY. The song finally saw the light of day in 2002 on singles from the album HEATHEN and again on the NOTHING HAS CHANGED compilation in 2014.
TOY was recorded following David's triumphant Glastonbury 2000 performance. Bowie entered the studio with his band, Mark Plati, Sterling Campbell, Gail Ann Dorsey, Earl Slick, Mike Garson, Holly Palmer and Emm Gryner, to record new interpretations of songs he'd first recorded from 1964-1971. David planned to record the album 'old school' with the band playing live, choose the best takes and then release it as soon as humanly possible in a remarkably prescient manner. Unfortunately, in 2001 the concept of the 'surprise drop' album release and the technology to support it were still quite a few years off, making it impossible to release TOY, as the album was now named, out to fans as instantly as David wanted. In the interim, David did what he did best; he moved on to something new, which began with a handful of new songs from the same sessions and ultimately became the album HEATHEN, released in 2002 and now acknowledged as one of his finest moments.
The third CD/set of 10"s features 'Unplugged & Somewhat Slightly Electric' mixes of thirteen TOY tracks. Producer Mark Plati: "While we were recording the basic tracks Earl Slick suggested that he and I overdub acoustic guitars on all the songs. He said this was a Keith Richards' trick, sometimes these guitars would be a featured part of the track, and at other times they'd be more subliminal. Later while mixing, David heard one of the songs broken down to just vocals and acoustic guitars; this gave him the idea that we ought to do some stripped-down mixes like that and that maybe one day they'd be useful."
Available in 3CD or 6x10" vinyl formats, TOY (TOY:BOX) is a special edition of the TOY album. The 'capture the moment' approach of the recording sessions are extended to the sleeve artwork designed by Bowie featuring a photo of him as a baby with a contemporary face. The package also contains a 16-page full-colour book featuring previously unseen photographs by Frank Ockenfels 3.
The third CD/set of 10"s features the aforementioned 'Unplugged & Somewhat Slightly Electric' mixes of thirteen TOY tracks.

DAVID BOWIE Estate Sells His Publishing Catalogue to Warner Chappell - Variety exclusive.
After months of negotiations, David Bowie's estate has sold the singer's formidable publishing catalogue to Warner Chappell Music for a price upwards of $250 million, sources confirm to Variety. The catalogue spans six decades.
The agreement comprises songs from the 26 David Bowie studio albums released during his lifetime, as well as the posthumous studio album release, 'Toy', which comes out on Friday. It also includes the two studio albums from Tin Machine, along with tracks released as singles from soundtracks and other projects.
The deal brings nearly all of Bowie's music into the Warner system. Last September, the estate announced a global partnership with Warner Music that will bring the late artist's vast recorded-music catalogue from 1968 through 2016 under the company's umbrella; the deal includes Bowie's albums from 2000 through 2016, which were originally released via Sony Music. News that Bowie's estate was in negotiations to sell his publishing was broken by Financial Times in October.
The announcement comes amid the 'Bowie 75' celebration, surrounding the late singer's 75th birthday on Saturday, January 8th. The campaign also includes pop-up stores in New York and London and the release in November of the 'Brilliant Adventure (1992-2001)' boxed set and, on Friday, his previously unreleased 'Toy' album, comprising re-recorded versions of relatively obscure songs dating from early in his career; while that album is available as part of the boxed set, it will be released separately on Friday.
In a statement confirming the news on Monday, Warner Chappell Music Co-Chair and CEO Guy Moot said: "All of us at Warner Chappell are immensely proud that the David Bowie estate has chosen us to be the caretakers of one of the most groundbreaking, influential, and enduring catalogues in music history. These are not only extraordinary songs, but milestones that have changed the course of modern music forever. Bowie's vision and creative genius drove him to push the envelope, lyrically and musically - writing songs that challenged convention, changed the conversation, and have become part of the canon of global culture. His work spanned massive pop hits and experimental adventures that have inspired millions of fans and countless innovators, not only in music, but across all the arts, fashion, and media. We are looking forward to tending his unparalleled body of songs with passion and care as we strive to build on the legacy of this most extraordinary human being."
"I'd like to thank everyone involved with making this wonderful deal happen," Moot continued, "including Bill Zysblat, Tom Cyrana, and the entire Bowie team at RZO, attorney Allen Grubman and firm, as well as our very own 'Team Bowie' made up of Warner Chappell colleagues Alice Aleksandrovich, Steve Butler, Michael LoBiondo, and David Woirhaye."
WCM Co-Chair and COO Carianne Marshall noted: "This fantastic pact with the David Bowie estate opens up a universe of opportunities to take his extraordinary music into dynamic new places. This isn't merely a catalogue, but a living, breathing collection of timeless songs that are as powerful and resonant today as they were when they were first written. We were pleased that the estate felt that Warner Chappell has the knowledge, experience, and resources to take the reins and continue to promote a collection of this stature. All of our global leaders and departments are incredibly excited and primed to get to work with these brilliant songs across multiple avenues and platforms. And with both sides of WMG now representing Bowie's career, we couldn't be better set up to represent this illustrious body of work."
On behalf of the David Bowie Estate and RZO, Allen Grubman added: "We are truly gratified that David Bowie's body of music will now be in the capable hands of Warner Chappell Music Publishing. We are sure they will cherish it and take care of it with the greatest level of dignity."
Bowie, who died of cancer in January of 2016, was fastidious about maintaining control of his work and regularly snapped up stray recordings and other items from his career whenever they became available. While his estate owns his catalogue from 1968 forward, his earliest officially released material - a string of singles and one self-titled 1967 album, all of which are vastly inferior to his classic work - is outside of the Warner deal, although ironically, many of the songs from that era appear in new versions on 'Toy'.

Released next week is DAVID BOWIE TOY:BOX which is available as a three CD set and six 10" Vinyl formats, on Friday 7th January.
TOY:BOX is a special edition of the unreleased TOY album. The 'capture the moment' approach of the recording sessions are extended to the sleeve artwork designed by Bowie featuring a photo of him as a baby with a contemporary face.
