Published today is the Kindle Edition of BLACKSTAR THEORY: The Last Works of David Bowie by LEAH KARDOS.
The eagerly anticipated 'Blackstar Theory' takes a close look at David Bowie's ambitious last works: his surprise 'comeback' project The Next Day (2013), the off-Broadway musical Lazarus (2015) and the album that preceded the artist's death in 2016 by two days, ★ (pronounced Blackstar).
The book explores the swirl of themes that orbit and entangle these projects from a starting point in musical analysis and features new interviews with key collaborators from the period: producer Tony Visconti, graphic designer Jonathan Barnbrook, musical director Henry Hey, saxophonist Donny McCaslin and assistant sound engineer Erin Tonkon.
These works tackle the biggest of ideas: identity, creativity, chaos, transience and immortality. They enact a process of individuation for the Bowie meta-persona and invite us to consider what happens when a star dies. In our universe, dying stars do not disappear - they transform into new stellar objects, remnants and gravitational forces. The radical potential of the Blackstar is demonstrated in the rock star supernova that creates a singularity resulting in cultural iconicity. It is how a man approaching his own death can create art that illuminates the immortal potential of all matter in the known universe.
About the author: Leah Kardos is a senior lecturer in music at Kingston University London, UK, where she co-founded the Visconti Studio with music producer Tony Visconti. She specialises in the areas of record production, pop aesthetics and criticism, and exploring interdisciplinary approaches to creative practice.
Reviews: "Leah Kardos deftly uncovers the patterns in David Bowie's "late style", seeing the mortality, morality, and self-consciousness hiding in plain sight. While musicological analysis is at the heart of her endeavor, she is nevertheless attuned to the places in his epic career where there are fissures and unexpected correspondences with other forms of art. Blackstar Theory is a feast for any Bowie fan-rabid or casual-and performs the closure that many of us were seeking. A welcome addition to the growing canon of Bowie studies." - Shelton Waldrep, Distinguished Professor of English, University of Southern Maine, USA.
"This is one of the most intelligent studies of David Bowie's music that will ever be published. It illuminates the interconnected web of meanings that are discoverable in his work in ways I have never encountered before. Leah Kardos shows with genuine illumination that the music of the late Bowie tackles big ideas such as the nature of identity, creativity, chaos, transience and im/mortality and provides us with signposts that take us back to the very start of his extraordinary life and musical career. The book is a major achievement." - Keith Ansell-Pearson, Emeritus Professor of Philosophy, University of Warwick, UK.
"A star-gazing telescope of sorts, Blackstar Theory provides an illuminating view of the last great works of a dying star. Intimately connected to the music and art of David Bowie, Leah Kardos elegantly crafts a respectful conduit for readers to share in her examination of the meanings generated by Bowie's work. As an in-depth scholarly guide and probing navigational tool, Blackstar Theory is a must-read for anyone wishing to engage with the constellation of meanings generated by Bowie's late music and art." - Lisa Perrott, Senior Lecturer, Waikato University, New Zealand, and series editor of New Approaches to Sound, Music and Media (Bloomsbury).

• On this day, 42 years ago, DAVID BOWIE appeared on NBC's SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE US TV show with a legendary three-song live performance.
BW News Flashback - December 2006
Former employees of NBC's Saturday Night Live were asked to send in precious anecdotes to GAWKER - one particular piece that stood out was when DAVID BOWIE appeared on the programme in December 1979.
David performed three songs... 'The Man Who Sold The World' where he was carried to front stage by backing singers Klaus Nomi and Joey Arias, whilst inside a costume (which was a nod to Dadaist Tristan Tzara - or if you've done your homework Sami Rosenstock).
The second song was 'TVC15' with Bowie dressed more conventionally as a Chinese airline stewardesses dress and lastly 'Boys Keep Swinging' complete with a puppet body.
The photograph right shows a scene from 'The Gas Heart' by Tristan Tzara. Costumes designed by Sonia Delaunay, Theatre Michel, Paris, July 6-7, 1923.
Tzara introduced the first performance as follows: "It is the only and greatest three-act hoax of the century. It will satisfy only industrialized imbeciles who believe in the existence of men of genius.".
SNL Employee: David Bowie and I manhandle his life-size plastic punching doll into the elevator. The next night, NBC's costumers will bolt David into this rigid contraption so he can spin and wobble across the stage on live television, while lip-synching one of the songs that made him into the icon known as Ziggy Stardust.
For a second, I gaze into Bowie's left eye and notice his famous blown pupil. "Why drag this all the way back to your hotel? The Props department could lock it up for you."
He laughs. "Nothing personal, but if it goes missing, I can't just buy another one down at the corner shop."
I giggle. "Good point."
I still look back on this comment as my best shot at the Melonhead Hall of Fame.
Nobody gives us a second glance as we struggle outside to the Plaza. The Thin White Duke and an anonymous melonhead are trying to stuff a six-foot-tall, brightly-colored punching doll into the back seat of a stretch limo, but New Yorkers, true to form, don't even notice this singular tableau. David turns, to say thanks for the help. Polite guy. My brain is churning at light speed, searching for another bon mot.
So I bring out the big guns: "Break a leg!" When David looks puzzled, I rush to explain: "Not now. Tomorrow night." He smiles and thanks me again.
Then his limousine is gone, and I'm left alone to compose my Hall of Fame acceptance speech.

Up for grabs at WESSEX AUCTIONS ROOMS on Thursday 16th December is a recently discovered acetate by DAVID BOWIE And The Lower Third entitled: 'I Want Your Love'.
This Regent Sound one-sided UK acetate was recorded in 1965. The song written by Johnnie Dee / Johnny Tarr, was also recorded by The Pretty Things and featured on their 1965 album Get The Picture?
Around this time, David Bowie was working with Shel Talmy, and according to the publishing database, and Shel Talmy archives, it was also produced by him.
The band were hired to demo this song. It is a full on The Who style assault with slashing guitars and David Bowie's distinctive vocals. Listen to a sample below:
Check out Lot 451 at easyliveauction.com website.
Update: The price realised was £12,000 GBP.
A GoFundMe has been created today for CALVIN LEE who needs a helping hand in his current predicament.
TONY VISCONTI: "Calvin Lee, a great contributor to DAVID BOWIE's career, is in big financial trouble and his health is very bad. If anyone knows how to start a funding contribution situation please let me know. I don't have the know how for these things.
"Calvin Lee is one of the kindest and most generous people on Earth. In 1969 he was a record company executive in London. He spotted David Bowie's talent. He sold valuable artwork in order to finance the recording of Space Oddity - David's first hit record. Calvin donated very collectable San Francisco psychedelic posters to raise money for David's project, The Beckenham Arts Lab. Now Calvin has dementia and osteoporosis. His Los Angeles landlord is trying to evict him. Calvin has run out of money. At the moment he has carers provided by the state of California. One of them is supporting Calvin and is trying to prevent him from becoming homeless."
MARY FINNIGAN: 'I donated because I knew Calvin during the time he was supporting David Bowie. He was outstanding in the music biz jungle - a truly kind, courteous and generous friend. Please help him in his time of need just as Calvin did in David's.'

Released next month is DAVID BOWIE TOY:BOX which is available as a three CD set and six 10" Vinyl formats, on Friday 7th January 2022.
TOY:BOX is a special edition of the unreleased TOY album. The 'capture the moment' approach of the recording sessions are extended to the sleeve artwork designed by Bowie featuring a photo of him as a baby with a contemporary face. The package also contains a 16-page full-colour book featuring previously unseen photographs by Frank Ockenfels 3. TOY was recorded following David's Glastonbury 2000 performance. Bowie entered the studio with his band to record new interpretations of songs he'd first recorded from 1964-1971. The plan was to record the album 'old school' with the band playing live, choose the best takes and then release it as soon as humanly possible. Unfortunately, in 2001 the concept of the 'surprise drop' album release and the technology to support it were still quite a few years off, making it impossible to release TOY at the time.
Included in TOY:BOX is a second CD/set of 10"s of alternative mixes and versions including proposed B-Sides (versions of David's debut single 'Liza Jane' and 1967's 'In The Heat Of The Morning'), later mixes by Tony Visconti and the 'Tibet Version' of 'Silly Boy Blue' recorded at The Looking Glass Studio at the time of the 2001 Tibet House show in New York featuring Philip Glass on piano and Moby on guitar.
The third CD/set of 10"s features 'Unplugged & Somewhat Slightly Electric' mixes of thirteen TOY tracks. Producer Mark Plati "While we were recording the basic tracks Earl Slick suggested that he and I overdub acoustic guitars on all the songs. He said this was a Keith Richards' trick, sometimes these guitars would be a featured part of the track, and at other times they'd be more subliminal. Later while mixing, David heard one of the songs broken down to just vocals and acoustic guitars; this gave him the idea that we ought to do some stripped-down mixes like that and that maybe one day they'd be useful. Once we put a couple of other elements in the pot, it felt like it could be a completely different record. I was only too happy to finish that thought some two decades after the fact."
The tracklisting runs as follows:
