The latest in an award-winning and critically acclaimed series of DAVID BOWIE box sets entitled BRILLIANT ADVENTURE (1992-2001) is released today.
The box set includes newly remastered versions of some of Bowie's most underrated and experimental material: BLACK TIE WHITE NOISE, THE BUDDHA OF SUBURBIA, 1.OUTSIDE, EARTHLING and 'hours...' along with the expanded live album BBC RADIO THEATRE, LONDON, JUNE 27, 2000, the non-album / alternative version / B-sides and soundtrack music compilation RE:CALL 5 and the legendary previously unreleased album TOY.
TOY was recorded following David's triumphant Glastonbury 2000 performance. Bowie entered the studio with his band to record new interpretations of songs he'd first recorded from 1964-1971. Unfortunately, in 2001 the concept of the 'surprise drop' album release and the technology to support it were still quite a few years off, making it impossible to release.
Exclusive to the box set are BBC RADIO THEATRE, LONDON, JUNE 27, 2000 and RE:CALL 5. The former was recorded two days after the famous Glastonbury performance in front of 500 lucky fans at the BBC's art deco theatre in central London. RE:CALL 5 features 39 non-album / alternative version / b-sides and soundtrack songs over 4-LPs.
The 84-page accompanying books will feature rarely seen and previously unpublished photos by photographers including Frank W. Ockenfels 3, Nick Knight, John Scarisbrick and Nina Schultz Terner and others, as well as memorabilia, technical notes about the albums from producers/engineers Brian Eno, Nile Rodgers, Reeves Gabrels and Mark Plati as well as a new an interview with THE BUDDHA OF SUBURBIA collaborator Erdal Kizilcay.

ISO Records/Parlophone Records today announces the release of CAN'T HELP THINKING ABOUT ME, a previously unreleased re-recording of David Bowie's 1966 single taken from the forthcoming album TOY which features in the DAVID BOWIE 5. BRILLIANT ADVENTURE (1992-2001) and TOY (TOY:BOX) boxsets. The studio recording is coupled with a live version recorded at Maida Vale Studios on 25th October 1999 for the Mark Radcliffe BBC Radio 1 Show, exclusive to this single.
CAN'T HELP THINKING ABOUT ME was David Bowie's first single of three for the Pye label and was resurrected for the first time in over 30 years when David performed it on the VH-1 Storytellers show in August 1999. The song remained on the setlist for the short promotional tour for the 'hours...' album. The previously unreleased video for the track was recorded at Élysée Montmartre in Paris on 14th October that year.
The live version of the song was recorded for the Mark Radcliffe BBC Radio 1 show. Mark and his co-presenter Marc Riley remember the day fondly. Mark Radcliffe: "I'm so pleased that this track is being released as it was such a joy and surprise when he included it in his set at Maida Vale that day. I remember that occasion so fondly. David was wearing an excellent shirt and was on such great, twinkly form. I recall David dancing with Gail Ann Dorsey to 'I Try' by Macy Gray which was playing on the radio. I interviewed Gail Ann a year or so ago, and she too remembered that moment vividly. It was one of the few cherished and special days I got to spend with him for which I remain ever grateful."
Marc Riley: "The thought of David Bowie doing a session for us was mind blowing to be frank. David said to us "One of you requested we do 'Drive In Saturday'?" I gulped. How presumptuous of me! "Yes David" says I. "We can do that! Here's the current live set list, what else do you fancy?" I don't think I've ever moved so fast in my life. Before Mark could lift his hand from his pocket, I'd taken the piece of paper from David and let my eyes drop from top to bottom. "You do 'Can't Help Thinking About Me'!!!" "We do... do you want that one too?" "Yes!!!". The session was incredible, and David even gave us an extra tune, a brilliant rendition of 'Repetition' from Lodger."

Incredibly sad news to read that the legendary photographer MICK ROCK has passed away, aged 72 years old.
Posted on Mick's official website and social accounts was the following announcement:
It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share our beloved psychedelic renegade Mick Rock has made the Jungian journey to the other side. Those who had the pleasure of existing in his orbit, know that Mick was always so much more than 'The Man Who Shot The 70s'. He was a photographic poet - a true force of nature who spent his days doing exactly what he loved, always in his own delightfully outrageous way.
The stars seemed to effortlessly align for Mick when he was behind the camera; feeding off of the unique charisma of his subjects electrified and energized him. His intent always intense. His focus always total. A man fascinated with image, he absorbed visual beings through his lens and immersed himself in their art, thus creating some of the most magnificent photographs rock music has ever seen. To know Mick was to love him. He was a mythical creature; the likes of which we shall never experience again.
Let us not mourn the loss, but instead celebrate the fabulous life and extraordinary career of Michael David Rock. While you do so in your own way, we must ask that the privacy of his nearest and dearest be respected at this time. Therefore, there will be no further comments.
Rest in peace - Michael David Rock, born 21st November 1948 - 19th November 2021.
Sending sincere condolences to his family and friends.

A VARIETY exclusive report by Manori Ravindran reveals that a DAVID BOWIE film is forthcoming from Director BRETT MORGEN.
Brett Morgen, the freewheeling director behind 'Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck', 'Jane' and 'The Kid Stays in the Picture', is finalising a top-secret David Bowie project based on thousands of hours of rare performance footage of the musician, most of it previously uncirculated, sources confirm to Variety.
Morgen has been at work on the Bowie film, for which an official title has not been disclosed, for the last four years. A source close to the production cryptically describes it as "neither documentary nor biography, but an immersive cinematic experience built, in part, upon thousands of hours of never before seen material."
Sources say live concert footage plays a central role in the film, and that Morgen is eyeing an IMAX release. The filmmaker wears a number of hats on the project, taking on editing, writing and producing duties, in addition to directing.
The musician's long-time producer Tony Visconti is adding his bona fides to the film, serving as music producer. Meanwhile, the Oscar-winning sound team behind 'Bohemian Rhapsody' is also mixing and designing the project. Re-recording mixers are Oscar winner Paul Massey and David Giammarco ('Ford v Ferrari'), while the sound design team includes John Warhurst and Nina Hartstone, both of whom picked up Academy Awards for the Freddie Mercury biopic.
Morgen acquired the rights to the material himself, and BMG and Live Nation are financiers as well as producers, alongside the director's own production banner, Public Road.
Crucially, the pic's been made with the support and cooperation of the David Bowie estate. Bowie's widow, the model Iman, recently told Variety that the family is firmly against authorising a biopic of Bowie's life: "It's always a no. We always ask each other, 'Would he do it?' He wouldn't", as evidenced by Todd Haynes' 1998 film 'Velvet Goldmine', which has a clearly Bowie-like figure at the centre and is named after one of his songs, but for which Bowie declined to license his music. But clearly, the family was more amenable to a live concert-oriented documentary about the singer, particularly from someone with Morgen's track record.
You can read the whole article over at the Variety website.
DAVID BOWIE artwork entitled: 'Wolf n' Ship' created in 1995, realised 10,625 Euros today at CHRISTIE'S 20th/21st Century: Milan Online Sale.
The acrylic on canvas, titled, signed and dated on the reverse, was put up for sale by a private collector in Italy.
Bowie's artwork is obviously based around the DAMIEN HIRST 'Away from the Flock' sheep in formaldehyde floor-based sculpture that Hirst created in 1994.
For more details, please visit christies.com website.
(Ed. There seems to be a typo by Christie's on the title of this artwork, I believe it should be 'Sheep n' Wolf' which was first exhibited at the Convention Centre, at the Montreux Jazz Festival, in Montreux, Switzerland on 7th - 22nd July 1995.)
Supermodel, philanthropist and entrepreneur IMAN joins TODAY to talk about her relationship with her husband DAVID BOWIE, and the new fragrance she is releasing in his honour.

It is the result of an ongoing experiment on old video footage with the help of new technologies such as AI Video powered software, colour correction and non-linear video editing software and other experimental transformation techniques on video and images. It is therefore presented here completely reworked visually in a form that didn't exist before because the technology itself creates a unique result: it is indeed an interpretation of the original rather than a copy: more like a twin. Its only purpose is to demonstrate the available possibilities and sometimes limitations (depending on the quality of the source material) of artificial intelligence in video post production.
On this day, 57 years ago, DAVID BOWIE (aka Davy Jones) aged 17 years old, appeared on the BBC One 'Tonight' programme as the President of 'The Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Long-Haired Men' in 1964. Look carefully and you can spot George Underwood who is stood on the far right, wearing suede boots.
Hosted by Cliff Michelmore, David along with several members of The Manish Boys told of their latest society.
(Ed. For the record, this wasn't Bowie's first TV appearance. His first known TV appearance was 4 months earlier on BBC Two 'The Beat Room' performing 'Liza Jane' as Davy Jones and The King Bees, which aired on 27th July 1964. Also appearing on episode #4 were Elkie Brooks, Georgie Fame, Wayne Gibson with The Dynamic Sounds and Kenny Lynch and The Echoes).
On this day, 15 years ago, DAVID BOWIE performed at the 3rd Annual Black Ball Benefit for Keep A Child Alive at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City, USA in 2006.
This was to be his last live performance on stage with a band.
David performed three songs: 'Wild Is The Wind' (with Mike Garson on piano), 'Fantastic Voyage' (backed by Alicia Keys' band) and 'Changes' (duet with Alicia Keys).
Hosts Alicia Keys and Iman were joined by KCA founder Leigh Blake, emcee Wanda Sykes and honourees Richard Beckman, Dr. Paul Farmer and Partners in Health, and "Mama" Carol Dyanti.
Other musical performers were Alicia Keys, Damian Marley and Louis XIV.
As far as I'm aware, his performance wasn't professionally filmed and the only filmed footage was shot by DB fan Simone. Check out her footage below...

All set for release is DAVID BOWIE TOY:BOX which is available as a three CD set and six 10" Vinyl formats, on Friday 7th January 2022.
TOY:BOX is a special edition of the unreleased TOY album. The 'capture the moment' approach of the recording sessions are extended to the sleeve artwork designed by Bowie featuring a photo of him as a baby with a contemporary face. The package also contains a 16-page full-colour book featuring previously unseen photographs by Frank Ockenfels 3. TOY was recorded following David's Glastonbury 2000 performance. Bowie entered the studio with his band to record new interpretations of songs he'd first recorded from 1964-1971. The plan was to record the album 'old school' with the band playing live, choose the best takes and then release it as soon as humanly possible. Unfortunately, in 2001 the concept of the 'surprise drop' album release and the technology to support it were still quite a few years off, making it impossible to release TOY at the time.
Included in TOY:BOX is a second CD/set of 10"s of alternative mixes and versions including proposed B-Sides (versions of David's debut single 'Liza Jane' and 1967's 'In The Heat Of The Morning'), later mixes by Tony Visconti and the 'Tibet Version' of 'Silly Boy Blue' recorded at The Looking Glass Studio at the time of the 2001 Tibet House show in New York featuring Philip Glass on piano and Moby on guitar.
The third CD/set of 10"s features 'Unplugged & Somewhat Slightly Electric' mixes of thirteen TOY tracks. Producer Mark Plati "While we were recording the basic tracks Earl Slick suggested that he and I overdub acoustic guitars on all the songs. He said this was a Keith Richards' trick, sometimes these guitars would be a featured part of the track, and at other times they'd be more subliminal. Later while mixing, David heard one of the songs broken down to just vocals and acoustic guitars; this gave him the idea that we ought to do some stripped-down mixes like that and that maybe one day they'd be useful. Once we put a couple of other elements in the pot, it felt like it could be a completely different record. I was only too happy to finish that thought some two decades after the fact."
The tracklisting runs as follows:

On sale now... DAVID BOWIE graces the front cover of the December issue of UNCUT magazine.
On the cusp of a new century, what does David Bowie do? Having plotted a dramatic course forward across four decades, he decides instead to revisit a number of songs from the earliest days of his career. But the album he records, called Toy, is consigned to Bowie's vaults, where it has been the subject of much intense speculation ever since. To celebrate its imminent release - 21 years late! - Uncut brings you the definitive account of David Bowie's legendary lost album as told by Bowie's closest collaborators and confidants. "It's a ghost album," Tony Visconti tells Peter Watts. "I'm so glad people are now getting to hear it, because I think some of David's finest work is on Toy."
Writer Michael Bonner states on the Uncut blog: David Bowie's Toy, from 2001, is remarkable for several reasons. Most obviously: it is a rare instance of this most forward-looking artist reconnecting with his early, pre-fame self. But what does Toy say about Bowie at the start of the second millennium, staring back through the decades to his young, hungry self? And once he'd reckoned with his past, how did Toy's disappearance from the schedules affect him?
More significantly, perhaps, Toy represents one of the last substantial pieces of unreleased work from Bowie. Some kind of soundtrack for The Man Who Fell To Earth exists - but how extensive it is and in just what shape the material is seems uncertain. But Toy is the whole thing - an actual album by a genuinely great artist recorded during a period of transition. You can read about it on page 90, in Peter Watts' deep dive into its genesis, creation and afterlife. As long-serving Bowie guitarist Earl Slick tells Peter, "Even now he's gone for five years or more, the surprises keep coming."
There are also two gifts inside... a giant Bowie posterzine 'Bowie Bulletin' and a 15-track new music CD 'Conversation Pieces;, comprising of 15-tracks of the month's best new music, including songs by Courtney Barnett, Modern Nature, Endless Boogie, Bedouine, Richard Dawson and Circle, Tobacco City, Damon Albarn, New Age Doom & Lee 'Scratch' Perry and more.
Uncut is on sale in UK shops now.
