CLAREVILLE GROVE DEMOS
20th February 2019

David Bowie Clareville Grove Demos Released on 17th May is CLAREVILLE GROVE DEMOS a 3 x 7" vinyl singles box set featuring previously unreleased DAVID BOWIE recordings from 1969.

The singles box set contains six home demos, FOUR of which are previously unreleased recordings.

Recorded early in 1969 in David's flat in Clareville Grove, London, this live to tape demo session features David performing as a duo with John 'Hutch' Hutchinson following the end of the Feathers trio, which featured David's then girlfriend Hermione Farthingale.

The tracklisting runs as follows:

SINGLE 1

Side A: Space Oddity
Now featuring the final lyrics, this version of the demo first appeared on the long deleted Space Oddity 40th Anniversary 2 CD release, and is now making its debut on vinyl. It predates the 2nd February Morgan Studios recording that featured in the Love You Till Tuesday television film.

Side B: Lover To The Dawn
This song aimed at a former lover would eventually morph into Cygnet Committee recorded for the David Bowie (aka Space Oddity) album later in the year.

SINGLE 2

Side A: Ching-a-Ling
Previously recorded in October 1968 by the trio Turquoise featuring David, Hermione and Tony Hill (who became Feathers when Hutch replaced Hill). David and Hutch continued to perform the song as a duo following Hermione's departure.

Side B: An Occasional Dream
Slightly different lyrically to the later album version, this version of the demo also first appeared on the deleted Space Oddity 40th Anniversary release.

SINGLE 3

Side A: Let Me Sleep Beside You
A studio version was first recorded in September 1967 but remained unreleased until The World Of David Bowie album in 1970. The song was later recorded in session for the BBC in October 1969 and was a song David clearly believed in, recording it once more for the unreleased Toy album 30 years later. That version finally saw the light of day on the Nothing Has Changed 3 CD set in 2014.

Side B: Life Is A Circus
A cover of an obscure song written by Roger Bunn recorded by vocal/instrumental quartet Djinn. Vocals are shared Simon and Garfunkel style by David and Hutch.

Musicians:
David Bowie (vocals, guitar and Stylophone)
John 'Hutch' Hutchinson (vocals and guitar)

You can pre-order NOW!

(Ed. Please don't confuse any of the recordings with the well-known 'Beckenham Oddity' bootleg - these are completely different demo tape recordings).

ZIGGY REEL TO REEL AT AUCTION
19th February 2019

Reel 2 Reel tape David Bowie 1971 Check out Lot 451 in the upcoming OMEGA AUCTIONS Music Memorabilia auction on 12th March - a reel-to-reel rehearsal tape containing unheard demos of DAVID BOWIE and Mick Ronson performing 'Starman', 'Moonage Daydream', 'Hang On To Yourself' and more.

Description: DAVID BOWIE REEL 2 REEL REHEARSAL TAPE INCLUDING UNHEARD DEMOS OF STARMAN, MOONAGE DAYDREAM AND HANG ON TO YOURSELF.

Reel 2 Reel tape David Bowie 1971 Reel 2 Reel tape David Bowie 1971 This remarkable collection of recordings were collated by Mick Ronson on a 5" EMITAPE reel 2 reel containing 18 tracks (taped on both sides) of Bowie and Ronson recordings that went on to feature on 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars' album along with some on David Bowie's releases. All tracks would have been recorded either direct onto a reel 2 reel or at Trident Studios during the Summer and later months of 1971.

The reel of tape is made up of numerous pieces of tape that have been connected with leader tape resulting in 1 or 2 second gaps between tracks. The 3 important tracks are unheard demos of Starman (4 minutes 31 seconds), Moonage Daydream (4 minutes 35 seconds) and Hang On To Yourself (2 minutes 10 seconds). In addition to these 3 unheard demos, other tracks include Five Years, Rock 'N' Roll Suicide, Round And Round, Amsterdam, Holy Holy, Ziggy Stardust, Velvet Goldmine, Soul Love and Lady Stardust, along with some small sections of chat and harmonising. The total length of the recording is approximately 44 minutes.

Reel 2 Reel tape David Bowie 1971 Reel 2 Reel tape David Bowie 1971 Reel 2 Reel tape David Bowie 1971 The tape was given to Kevin Hutchinson (the vendor) in late 1971 by Mick Ronson. Kevin was a friend and neighbour of Mick Ronson's from Hull who at the time was a budding 15/16 year old musician writing his own songs. Kevin spent time with Mick (at Mick's house) working on a variety of both Kevin and Mick's own songs. One of Kevin's songs included 'Hey Saturn' which Mick recorded at Trident Studios (see Lot 449). With Kevin looking to find a recording deal himself Mick gave Kevin the tape suggesting he learn the tracks as it would put him in good stead going forward and may even lead to him working with Bowie and The Spiders From Mars. Kevin spent the night learning the tracks and the next day gave a rendition in Mick's living room to Mick and his mother - they were very impressed!

The reel is currently housed in a card reel 2 reel box with sticker on the outside that reads 'David Bowie Rehearsal Tape'. A complete CD recording of the tape will be included in the sale.

**Please note that the acetate and its contents are being sold as an artefact only and that no copyright is included with the sale.

Estimate: £5,000-£10,000 with a starting bid of £4,000 GBP

Auction: Music Memorabilia - lots (1-451)
Date: Tuesday 12th March, 10.30am
Venue: Omega Auctions, Sankey Valley Industrial Estate, Newton-Le-Willows, WA12 8DN.

8th February 2019

Courtesy of the BBC here are some clips of the DAVID BOWIE: FINDING FAME documentary which airs tomorrow evening on BBC TWO at 21:00.

Director and producer FRANCIS WHATELY interviewed in MUSIC WEEK - 'The fans will be delighted'...

FW: "Quite a lot of demos, quite a lot of photos that have never been seen, quite a lot of archival material. Unfortunately, there were something like eight [TV] performances from around Europe in the '60s and they were all wiped, whether it was Belgian, Dutch, German or British TV. All broadcasters did it at that time. However, we have got some treats in store. We've got things that have never been seen before in terms of archive - some broadcast things and some sort of live footage. The fans will be delighted. I think I have fulfilled the fans' desire for new material, although more importantly for me is just to tell a good story about a fascinating period in his life."

You can read the whole interview HERE.

100 YEARS OF BRITISH AIRWAYS
2nd February 2019

DAVID BOWIE is one of a multitude of Brits who feature in the BRITISH AIRWAYS Centenary advert entitled: 'Made by Britain'.

SPYING THROUGH A KEYHOLE
1st February 2019

All set for release on 5th April is the DAVID BOWIE Spying Through A Keyhole 7" Vinyl Box Set.

Spying Through A Keyhole David Bowie Spying Through A Keyhole David Bowie With 2019 marking 50 years since David Bowie's first hit, Space Oddity, Parlophone is set to release a 7" vinyl singles box set of nine previously unreleased recordings* from the era during which Space Oddity was first conceived.

The title 'Spying Through A Keyhole' is a lyric taken from the previously unknown song, Love All Around, and though most of the other titles are known, these versions have never been officially released until late last year. Most of the recordings are solo vocal and acoustic home demo performances, unless otherwise stated.

The design of each single label is presented to reflect the way David sent many of his demos to publishers and record companies, featuring his own handwritten song titles on EMIDISC acetate labels. The singles themselves are all mono and play at 45 r.p.m.

Please note: Due to the nature of some of the solo home demos where Bowie accompanied himself on acoustic guitar, the recording quality isn't always of a usual studio fidelity. This is partly due to David's enthusiastic strumming hitting the red on a couple of the tracks, along with the limitations of the original recording equipment and tape degradation. However, the historical importance of these songs and the fact that the selections are from an archive of tracks cleared for release by Bowie, overrides this shortcoming.

The tracklistings run as follows:

SINGLE 1
Side 1
Mother Grey (demo)
Side 2
In The Heat Of The Morning (demo)

SINGLE 2
Side 1
Goodbye 3d (Threepenny) Joe (demo)
Side 2
Love All Around (demo)

SINGLE 3
Side 1
London Bye, Ta-Ta (demo)
Side 2
Angel, Angel, Grubby Face (demo version 1)

SINGLE 4
Side 1
1. Angel, Angel, Grubby Face (demo version 2)
2. Space Oddity (demo excerpt)
Side 2
Space Oddity (demo) with John 'Hutch' Hutchinson.

*Although this will be the first physical release of these tracks, Parlophone did make them available on streaming services for a limited period only in December.

You can pre-order Spying Through A Keyhole NOW!

DAVID BOWIE: FINDING FAME
1st February 2019

The 90-minute documentary film DAVID BOWIE: FINDING FAME is to be shown on Saturday 9th February on BBC TWO at 21:00 to 22:30.

This feature-length documentary tells the untold story of how David Robert Jones became David Bowie, how Bowie became Ziggy Stardust and how Ziggy became immortal - changing the musical landscape as he did so. David Bowie: Finding Fame is the story that finally makes sense of one of the greatest icons of the 20th and 21st centuries.

With remarkable, unheard audio recordings, unseen archive and unpublished documents alongside exclusive interviews with David's family, girlfriends, lifelong friends and early collaborators, this film shows how his experiences in the 1960s created a blueprint for his entire career.

Starting in 1966, when he changed his name to Bowie, the film traces his interest in everything from Holst to Bill and Ben, the Flowerpot Men, and Anthony Newley to Tibetan Buddhism. Highlights include a deconstruction - through the eight-track masters - of Bowie classics including Space Oddity, The Man Who Sold The World and the song he wanted to forget, The Laughing Gnome. There are previously unheard demos, never-before-seen footage of his journey through Siberia in 1973 and extraordinary Ziggy footage, believed to be lost forever.

Contributors include Bowie's first cousin and lifelong friend Kristina Amadeus, and his former girlfriend and muse Hermione Farthingale - neither of whom have been filmed talking about him before; the late Lindsay Kemp, in his last filmed interview; former girlfriend Dana Gillespie; lifelong friends Geoff MacCormack and George Underwood; producers Mike Vernon, Tony Visconti and Tony Hatch; and Woody Woodmansey, the last remaining Spider From Mars.

This transmission is ahead of the 50th anniversary of the release of David Bowie's Space Oddity.

Directed and produced by Francis Whately, this is the last part of his award-winning and acclaimed David Bowie Trilogy - David Bowie: Five Years, David Bowie: The Last Five Years and now David Bowie: Finding Fame.

There is also a repeat showing on the same channel on Thursday 14th February at 23.15 pm.

ASHES TO ASHES: THE SONGS OF DAVID BOWIE, 1976-2016
1st February 2019

Ashes To Ashes: The Songs of David Bowie, 1976-2016 Published this month is ASHES TO ASHES: THE SONGS OF DAVID BOWIE, 1976-2016 by author CHRIS O'LEARY.

In 2015 Chris O'Leary published the first volume of his two-volume exploration, 'Rebel Rebel', of every known song David Jones / David Bowie ever wrote, in chronological order. This is the second volume.

Ashes To Ashes covers every single Bowie song, whether it was sung, written, or produced by him, from 1976, when he first recorded with Iggy Pop on 'The Idiot,' to his last masterpiece 'Blackstar,' released just days before his death in 2016. Each song is annotated in depth and explored in essays that touch upon the song's creation, production, influences and impact. It hits everything from "Heroes" to the Labyrinth soundtrack, from his 1985 camp duet with Mick Jagger on 'Dancing In the Street' to 'Where Are We Now?' his comeback single in 2013.

Along the way we encounter a vast cast of characters, weaving in and out of Bowie's life and his music: Brian Eno, John Cale, Nile Rodgers, Lou Reed, Freddie Mercury, Scott Walker, Marc Bolan, Arcade Fire, John Lennon, Mickey Rourke, Gary Oldman, Iman, Hanif Kureishi, Julien Temple, Giorgio Moroder, Neil Young and many others. And we range across the globe from Bowie's years in divided Berlin to his 'exile' years in Switzerland through his final years as a New Yorker, recording within walking distance of his home.

About the Author: Chris O'Leary is a writer, editor and journalist based in western Massachusetts. His interviewees range from Richard Fuld, former head of Lehman Brothers, to actor Kiefer Sutherland. He writes for Entertainment Weekly, as well as the Encyclopaedia Britannica. He's the author of Rebel Rebel: All the Songs of David Bowie 1964 - 1976.

This 800-page paperback is published on 19th February.

About Mulandi, in a few words:

Long term Bowie-freak Joybell has selflessly dedicated the last 10 years of her life to others and self-funded her flights and accommodations for every trip to Kenya to the point where she now provides care to 42 orphans.

Her main goal is to raise funds to offer them a decent education and give them a chance in life. This costs £140 per child per year (scholarship, including one meal per day and uniform).

So, Bowie-Freaks, let's offer them a Starman!
