THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH BOOK - NOW AVAILABLE
27th August 2016

The Man Who Fell To Earth book THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH book is now available for pre-ordering.

The Man Who Fell To Earth book Sized at A4, containing 300-pages, with over 600 images from StudioCanal. Insights from director Nic Roeg.

About a year and a half ago, JAY GLENNIE was approached to write the story of the making of DAVID BOWIE's first feature film debut The Man Who Fell To Earth, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, due to his relationship with the two Oscar-winning producers of the film Michael Deeley and Barry Spikings.

The cast and crew all told him about their fond memories of working with David Bowie who described him as polite and professional as well as being a bit strange. The film's director Nic Roeg spoke of the nervousness of the studio who felt that Bowie was just too weird and out there which, of course, proved to be ideal casting.

Check out some teasers of the double-page spreads...

SHE CAN DO THAT DEMO
18th August 2016

Listen to the previously unheard 'She Can Do That' (Demo) by DAVID BOWIE, with KRISTEEN YOUNG on vocals, done for the movie Stealth.

Kristeen says: "This is something maybe 6 people at most have heard. It's a David Bowie vocal demo (with me singing also) for a song for the film Stealth (BT wrote the backing track?)... recorded about 10 years ago? I was new to New York. I was just hanging around the studio. It was a time period when (on a few songs) David had me double his vocal an octave higher. I remember that day he kept saying, 'I don't want to write this. Do YOU want to write this?' I was naive and thought he was joking... but now, I don't think he was. What ended up on the soundtrack sounds very different to this and I didn't get credited (not Bowie's fault) even tho' my voice is on it. P.S. David wrote all the vocals on this. I just sang what he told me to. I. was. a. ro. bot"

TMWFTE 2016 OFFICIAL TRAILER
17th August 2016

Check out the 2016 official trailer for THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH, directed by Nicolas Roeg, starred DAVID BOWIE as Thomas Jerome Newton, a humanoid alien who visits our planet in search of water to save his homeland.

Released in 1976, the science fiction film was the launchpad for Bowie's Thin White Duke persona and is often considered his best film role.

The Man Who Fell to Earth, which has been given a 4K restoration to celebrate its 40th anniversary, is re-released in the UK on 9th September and available to buy from 24th October.

BEYOND NOW DUE IN OCTOBER
11th August 2016

Beyond Now by Donny McCaslin DONNY McCASLIN who as you know collaborated with DAVID BOWIE on his ★ album is to release a new album entitled: BEYOND NOW scheduled for 14th October.

Beyond Now features the same group of musicians that defined Blackstar's aesthetic - keyboardist Jason Lindner, bassist Tim Lefebvre and Mark Guiliana.

Donny says: "There was a lot of that energy bouncing off of all of us when we were recording Blackstar and I wanted to make sure that that was all present in this new record.

"The title track 'Beyond Now' is directly inspired by a song of David's that we recorded during the Blackstar sessions, but that didn't make the final record. All the originals were written last summer - before he passed away, but while the Blackstar recordings were still really fresh. [The sessions concluded in Spring 2015.] Songs of his were just kind of running through my unconscious. That was part of it."

Also featured on the album are two Bowie cover versions: 'A Small Plot Of Land' (David Bowie/Brian Eno/Reeves Gabrels/Mike Garson/Erdal Kizilcay/Sterling Campbell) and 'Warszawa' (David Bowie/Brian Eno).

The album tracklisting runs as follows:

       1. Shake Loose.
       2. A Small Plot Of Land.
       3. Beyond Now.
       4. Coelacanth 1.
       5. Bright Abyss.
       6. Faceplant.
       7. Warszawa.
       8. Glory.
       9 Remain.

You can purchase A Small Plot Of Land and can now listen to MP3 samples here of each track.

The album is available to pre-order NOW.

ON THIS DAY...
6th August 2016

On this day, 45 years ago, DAVID BOWIE recorded 'Life On Mars?' at Trident Studios in Soho, London.

David Bowie: "This song was so easy. Being young was easy. A really beautiful day in the park, sitting on the steps of the bandstand. 'Sailors bap-bap-bap-bap-baaa-bap.' An anomic (not a 'gnomic') heroine. Middle-class ecstasy.

"I took a walk to Beckenham High Street to catch a bus to Lewisham to buy shoes and shirts but couldn't get the riff out of my head. Jumped off two stops into the ride and more or less loped back to the house up on Southend Road.

"Workspace was a big empty room with a chaise longue; a bargain-price art nouveau screen ('William Morris,' so I told anyone who asked); a huge overflowing freestanding ashtray and a grand piano. Little else.

"I started working it out on the piano and had the whole lyric and melody finished by late afternoon. Nice.

"Rick Wakeman came over a couple of weeks later and embellished the piano part and guitarist Mick Ronson created one of his first and best string parts for this song which now has become something of a fixture in my live shows."

DAVID ON THE WALL
3rd August 2016

Check out 'David On The Wall' - a short documentary about the DAVID BOWIE mural created in Warsaw, Poland.

The film shows young and creative people who took part in this original and brave plan. Among them you will find: the initiators of the idea of creating a mural (Stacja Muranów), the creator of the graphic design (David Celek) and artists responsible for painting (Ideamo).

Graphic design of the mural was chosen by Internauts in a contest. The author of the winning work was David Celek, an architect and graphic designer who works and lives in Berlin. According to the rules of the contest, the graphic design of mural had to refer to David Bowie's short visit in Warsaw.

In April 1976 the singer was travelling from Berlin to Moscow and during a planned technical stopover, David went on a short walk to Komuna Paryska Square, where he bought a few Polish vinyl records. Among them, was one by Slask Song and Dance Ensemble. It was this album and opressive communist reality that inspired the artist to create an instrumental impression from that trip - the song 'Warszawa' which appeared on the Low album.

Experience the story of David Bowie's mural in Warsaw. Meet the people, for whom a short stopover of the artist in Poland, led to many weeks of hard work, crowned with the unveiling of the mural in the 40th anniversary of David Bowie's visit.

Also well worth watching is this film tracing David Bowie's walk through 1970s Warsaw...

The specificic song on the album used for inspiration by David Bowie and Brian Eno is entitled 'Helokanie' - folk music and lyrics performed by The Polish Song and Dance Ensemble 'Slask' and conducted by Stanislaw Hadyna.

DAVID BOWIE - UNSEEN PHOTOGRAPHS
1st August 2016

DAVID BOWIE unseen photographs are available for the first time in SNAP GALLERIES new exhibition - on show at the gallery from 16th August to 24th September 2016.

David Bowie by Gerald Fearnley 1967 What a dream. Launching a collection of previously unseen photographs of a major artist - like David Bowie. Sadly such events are rare, because by now, pretty much everything worth seeing has been seen.

But imagine if a technically accomplished and intimate set of previously unpublished black and white photographs of David Bowie were uncovered, almost fifty years after they were first taken. That would be pretty special, right?

Time to introduce GERALD FEARNLEY...

Gerald is the brother of "Dek" (Derek) Fearnley, the bass player of the band The Buzz, who backed David Bowie in 1966/1967, and played on his first album.

The band and David Bowie would often stay at Gerald's house in Worcester Park, Surrey. In fact he still remembers David Bowie playing piano with his son Roger on his knee, and how he taught the whole Fearnley family how to play the theme tune to the TV series The Killing Stones on penny whistles. David would often stay alone in the Fearnley family home writing songs, and the band would rehearse there prior to gigs.

Gerald was a professional photographer and this fact, and the connection through his brother Dek, resulted in him taking the colour portrait that appeared on the front cover of David Bowie's first album, the self-titled 1st June 1967 release David Bowie. This is a very well known image - and a rare previously unpublished colour outtake from that cover shoot appears for the first time in the exhibition.

However, while this colour LP cover image is very well known, Gerald's archives contain some completely unknown buried treasure - in the form of an entire session of black and white photographs of David Bowie (taken at his Bryanston Street studio around the time of, but completely distinct from the album cover session) - all previously unpublished.

These intimate portraits, set against a roll of no-seam studio background paper, show David Bowie in playful mood: in face paint, miming, laughing and smiling, throwing shapes, sitting in yoga positions, and clowning around in a superhero sweater and a bowler hat.

Limited editions signed by Gerald Fearnley available now to purchase.

It is with great pleasure that in this exhibition, for the first time anywhere in the world, Snap Galleries are able to offer a carefully curated selection of these photographs to their clients as limited editions signed by Gerald Fearnley.

Each signed photograph is offered in a choice of physical sizes, and edition sizes are reassuringly small. Just 10 signed and numbered examples in each of the three size options are available worldwide - a maximum of 30 prints of each image. The photographs work individually, and in pairs and in combinations of images, and to assist you if you are torn between competing images, we are keeping launch prices very keen.

They will be on show at the gallery from 16th August to 24th September 2016, but are available to order now if you can't wait.

Please visit snapgalleries.com for more information and purchasing options.

'The Age of Bowie - How David Bowie made a world of difference' is promised to "capture the greatest moments of Bowie's career; from the recording studio with the likes of Brian Eno and Tony Visconti; to iconic live performances from the 1970s, 80s and 90s, as well as the various encounters and artistic relationships he developed with rock luminaries John Lennon, Lou Reed and Iggy Pop", plus discuss in detail his "much-heralded and critically-acclaimed" ★ album.

Morley said: "On the day it was announced that David Bowie had died, before there was any time to think, I was asked a hundred times what I thought. What I really thought was that it would take a book to help fully process what Bowie meant to me, to music and popular culture, and to the world out there that changed because of him. Then I thought, I need to write that book."

Iain MacGregor, publishing director Simon and Schuster, acquired the world rights (all languages) from David Godwin Associates. S&S will publish the book globally, with Gallery Books releasing it in the US simultaneously.

BOWIE'S BECKENHAM ODDITY FESTIVAL
1st August 2016

Bowie's Beckenham Oddity Flyer back Bowie's Beckenham Oddity Flyer front A festival celebrating the life and legacy of DAVID BOWIE and The Beckenham Arts Lab...

Bowie fans and music lovers from Britain and beyond will come together in Beckenham, South London on Saturday 13th August, in the park where his rise to stardom took off in 1969.

Bowie's Beckenham Oddity will take place at the bandstand at the Croydon Road Recreation Ground, where Bowie and his friends from the Beckenham Arts Lab organised the UK's first Free Festival on 16th August, 47 years ago. The festival coincided with the release of David's first hit single Space Oddity and was immortalised with another hit song, Memory Of A Free Festival.

This year's event kicks off at 1.00 pm with a stellar line up of musical talent, who will reprise lots of Bowie's greatest songs including Life On Mars?, which he wrote while sitting on the bandstand steps. Featured artists include Malcolm Doherty, Daphne Guinness, Maggi Ronson, Phillip Rambow and Boe Huntress.

There's a welcome return from Amory Kane who played at the 1969 Free Festival and also at the 2013 and 2014 Memory of a Free Festival events organised at the bandstand by Beckenham resident Natasha Ryzhova Lau. The avant garde duo Raf & O are also welcomed back, following their performances in 2013 and 2014.

David's co-founder and organiser of The Beckenham Arts Lab, Mary Finnigan, will be signing copies of her recently expanded book Psychedelic Suburbia, and photographer Gaz de Vere will be taking photos at the event.

The two Memory of a Free Festival events raised £16,000 towards the bandstand restoration fund. Bowie's Beckenham Oddity organiser Wendy Faulkner says her aim this year is to raise even more.

"After the devastating news of David's death in January we felt we had to do a tribute for him - and there's no more fitting place to do this than the bandstand where he played in 1969," she says. "It's not just about Bowie, but also all the people who were involved with him along his path to stardom."

Bowie's Beckenham Oddity is supported by The London Borough of Bromley, which has named the bandstand in his honour. When enough money is raised, it will be restored to its former glory.

Other attractions this year include food and drinks by local caterers Dizzy's Diner, plus market stalls. There will be an auction of Bowie memorabilia - including a signed David Bowie item from the Official Bowie Archives - before the end of the day at 7.00pm.

Tickets for the event cost £10 (under tens free) and are available on the day or in advance NOW via wegottickets.com website.

TMWFTE 2016 PRINTS BY DOYLE
1st August 2016

TMWFTE regular print by Tim Doyle TMWFTE foil print by Tim Doyle Besides the cinema posters, artist TIM DOYLE was approached by StudioCanal and Under The Floorboards to create official artwork for THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH movie.

He has created a 20x30 inch full-bleed hand-printed silkscreened print, signed and numbered by the artist in a REGULAR edition of #145, and there is a RAINBOW FOIL variant edition of #55.

Tim says: "I specifically wanted to design this poster so that it could hang either direction, there is no true 'up' with this image.

The film features DAVID BOWIE playing an alien come to Earth to help save his family on his home planet, but instead finds his own moral ruin.

My intention was to show him both ascending to salvation and falling to his own destruction. It's truly a haunting and sparse film - if you haven't seen it, seek it out.

The artwork is by me, and the type and art assist is by Tyler Skaggs."

More details and purchasing information can be found over at mrdoyle.com website.
