BOWIE ODYSSEY 74 HARDCOVER
30th January 2024

Bowie Odyssey 74 by Simon Goddard The limited edition hardcover version of BOWIE ODYSSEY 74 by SIMON GODDARD, is scheduled for publication on 11th June, with the paperback version available on 9th May.

The fifth in this series, contains 192-pages and both are available to pre-order now.

Book by book, year by year, the ultimate literary trip through Bowie's greatest decade. This limited edition, published in hardback, features an alternative cover design.

Simon Goddard's electric ride through Bowie's greatest decade reaches the halfway mark with this fifth instalment. Wickedly funny and shockingly tragic, Bowie Odyssey 74 is the story of one man trying to find his soul in a world that's gone to the devil.

Darkness looms in 1974. It could be the winter energy crisis. It could be The Exorcist. Or it could be the shock that Britain's biggest pop star, David Bowie, is about to leave its shores for good.

Bidding the corpse of glam, Ziggy's haircut, and loyal 'Bowietania' farewell, the plan is to storm North America with his highly theatrical Diamond Dogs tour. But by opening night he's already wishing he was Barry White instead. Then there's that nasty sniff he can't get rid of. And that fly in his milk. And the suspicion that, much like every other teen idol named David, fame is driving him completely out of his mind...

ALBUMTOALBUM PODCAST: EARL SLICK PART 1
29th January 2024

David Bowie AlbumToAlbum podcast The latest episode of the DAVID BOWIE AlbumToAlbum podcast is available now.

In this episode, ARSALAN MOHAMMAD talks with EARL SLICK for a trip back to the mid 70s and the birth of Bowie's Station To Station. With rock 'n' roll, soul, Diamond Dogs and Young Americans, drugs, Lennon, Elvis and Chuck Berry along the way it's a wild ride. Enjoy!

This is the first of two devoted to the album, they take a leisurely stroll down memory lane and begin with Earl's reminiscences of pre-Beatles America, his first audition for Bowie and Visconti, bafflement at the Philly soul era, meeting and forgetting (and then meeting again) John Lennon, and the intense sessions that made up the first side of Station To Station.

I COULD PLAY THE WILD MUTATION...
29th January 2024

David Bowie Friars 29th January 1972 Today marks the 52nd anniversary of the first ever live performance by DAVID BOWIE as his alter ego 'Ziggy Stardust' at the Borough Assembly Hall (Friars) in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire on 29th January 1972.

This first live gig, after a week's rehearsal at the Royal Ballroom in Tottenham, with the "official" opening gig of the UK tour being on the 10th February at the Toby Jug in Tolworth.

David informs the music press a few days previously that: "Our new stage act will be outrageous, quite outrageous but very theatrical. It's going to be costumed and choreographed, quite different to anything anyone else has tried to do before... No-one has ever seen anything like this before."

The opening act were 'Grand Canyon', who warmed up for David and the as yet unnamed 'Spiders From Mars'. With newly cut and dyed Schwarzkopf red hair and matching red plastic boxing boots, David took the stage sporting a bomber jacket and rolled up trousers, complete with a bulging codpiece a la A Clockwork Orange style... and Ziggy Stardust "the cosmic yob" was born.

His three piece band - Mick Ronson (lead guitar), Trevor Bolder (bass) and Mick 'Woody' Woodmansey (drums) were all togged up in gold outfits but obviously hadn't totally switched over into full on "Martian Spider" mode. Probably with all three feeling rather uncomfortable and not yet fully convinced about this adventure they were about to embark on.

David said: "The Ziggy hair came lock, stock and curler, from the cover of a magazine ('Honey' or the like) and was sported by a model doing a shoot for Kansai Yamamoto's first London show. I couldn't afford the clothes but I could get the hair. Suzi did a straight forward copy. The cut and colour were both Kansai's - Schwarzkopf red was the colour. I had her cut my hair short in early January 1972. No dye. Layed flatish. I believe that it went red and stood up between the 20th and 25th of January 1972, therefore that's when the Kansai show must have been given maximum press."

Originally back in 1969, the Friars Club was started in Aylesbury by a bunch of hippies lead by David Stopps. The very first ever concert they presented was in the New Friarage Hall on 2nd June 1969 and featured Mike Cooper and a band called Mandrake Paddle Steamer. Other acts followed that year including The Pretty Things, King Crimson, Mott The Hoople and a myriad of others. This club was closed down in August 1970 but reopened in April 1971 at a larger venue called the Borough Assembly Hall. Between 1971 and 1975, the Friars presented bands such as David Bowie, Roxy Music, The Velvet Underground, Can, MC5, Mott The Hoople and many more.

Promoter David R. Stopps recalling the Ziggy show said: "I remember him doing 'Rock N' Roll Suicide', maybe for the first time. He shouted at the audience, 'Gimme your hands, 'cos you're wonderful' and nobody got up. In those days they used to sit on the floor, and the stage was reasonably high and somebody got up to give him their hands, but only half-heartedly... I remember thinking, 'Oh that's a strong song, but nobody had heard it.'".

In September 1975, Friars moved yet again to an even larger venue in Aylesbury... the new Aylesbury Civic Centre which was inside the Maxwell Hall, which lasted as a venue until December 1984.

A LONDON DAY
16th January 2024

David Bowie by Kevin Davies 1992 DAVID BOWIE - A LONDON DAY is a new exhibition of photographs by KEVIN DAVIES to be held at The Fitzrovia Chapel in London.

The Fitzrovia Chapel is proud to announce a new exhibition of photographs titled DAVID BOWIE - A LONDON DAY by Kevin Davies, capturing David Bowie over the course of a single day in 1992, which will open on 1st March and run until 20th March as part of The Fitzrovia Chapel's Cultural Programme.

DAVID BOWIE - A LONDON DAY is curated by journalist, author, cultural historian and Bowie fan, Dylan Jones.

In late 1992, David Bowie was preparing for the release of his 18th studio album Black Tie White Noise. Photographer Kevin Davies was commissioned to photograph Bowie for a series of images which would be used to promote the album. The session took place at a studio space in Clerkenwell on Sunday 13th December 1992, with a selection of images subsequently approved by Bowie for press use, after which Davies placed the original rolls of film, contact sheets and prints in storage where they stayed for almost 30 years.

In 2020, Davies uncovered the boxes to reveal perfectly preserved film negatives of 400+ images from that single day with Bowie, the details of which had been eclipsed by the indistinguishable memory of a luminous presence. The original collection of 450 images captured a then 45-year-old David Bowie styled for Black Tie White Noise, plus a series shot late in the day when Davies asked to capture Bowie "just as you are."

The exhibition features 20 photographs from across the day with selected images presented as diptychs and triptychs to explore a meditation on the photographic archive. This exhibition takes Bowie as its subject, but it is equally a representation of the afterlife of analogue photography. It explores the intersection of the archive and creative remembrance. The collection is built around a number of Bowie's own selects taken from his mark-ups on Davies' original contact sheets and reveals a timeless, almost age-less David Bowie in the prime of his life.

Kevin Davies said - "In the anxiety of COVID 19 lockdown I found comfort in retracing my career through stored away negative boxes. I finally had the opportunity to do something I had wanted to do for such a long time; rediscovering past jobs in their totality. For me, this exhibition is a chance to show the photographic process beyond a commission."

Curator Dylan Jones said - "This is a fascinating body of work as it's a visual narrative that takes place over the course of a single session on a single day. Not only does it show David Bowie's extraordinary attention to detail, but it also shows Kevin Davies' ability to shape and catalogue that narrative. I love these pictures."

A tranquil world of art, fashion and history, The Fitzrovia Chapel has long existed as a place of calm and contemplation in Central London. The Chapel is a space where people can step out of the everyday hustle to explore and examine not only the visiting works of art, but also the beauty and detail of the Chapel itself.

Madeleine Boomgaarden, Director of The Fitzrovia Chapel said - "These quietly observed and very beautiful images of Bowie sit perfectly in the calm elegance of the chapel. We're delighted to host images of this London icon in the heart of the city he grew up in."

A private press viewing will take place on 29th February.

Venue: The Fitzrovia Chapel
Address: Fitzroy Place, 2 Pearson Square, London W1T 3BF, England.

The exhibition opens on 1st March and runs until 20th March.

Exhibition opening times are: Tuesday to Saturday: 11am - 6pm / Sundays: 12 noon - 5pm / Mondays: Closed.

BOWIEWONDERWORLD IS 27 TODAY
8th January 2024

Little Wonderworld Today is also BowieWonderworld's birthday - now twenty-seven years online!

Thank you to everyone who helps support the site - it is appreciated more than you'll ever know :)

For those not aware, this web site was first set up as a 50th birthday present for David.

It started life as Little Wonder, then Little Wonderworld on Virgin Net Freespace. The website name was taken from the name of his secret gig at the Hanover Grand in London back in 1997.

I originally wanted the website name BowieWorld, but David and Ultrastar also wanted that name for a special virtual 3D chatroom BowieWorld he was about to launch. I obviously gave in and promised not to register it, and let them do their thing.

They never registered that domain name as it became part of Worlds.com in the end (and neither did I, keeping my promise). Eventually a Bowie fan in New Zealand did register it and put up some fan pages.

I patiently waited for the bowieworld.com site to close, and for the domain name to become available again and then claimed it in 2012.

I don't know why I registered it, I've done nothing with it yet. Let's just put it down to sentimental reasons.

ME AND MR. JONES
1st January 2024

Me and Mr. Jones by Suzi Ronson Scheduled for publication later this year in April is ME AND MR. JONES: My Life with David Bowie and The Spiders From Mars by SUZI RONSON.

From the stylist behind David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust look, an electrifying peek behind the curtains during a legendary chapter of pop culture history.

'Suzi Ronson was there as Bowie transitioned from suburban folkie to world superstar and genius. Few can offer such insight, and tell this fascinating story with such verve.' - Hanif Kureishi.

Suzi Ronson was working in a Beckenham hair salon in the early seventies when Mrs Jones came in for her weekly shampoo and set. After being introduced to her son David and his wife Angie, Suzi finds herself at the Bowies' bohemian apartment and is soon embroiled in their raucous world.

Having crafted his iconic Ziggy Stardust hairstyle, Suzi becomes the only working woman in David's touring party and joins the Spiders From Mars as they perform around the globe. Amid the costume blunders, parties and groupies she meets her husband-to-be, Mick Ronson, and together they traverse the absurdities of life in show business, falling in with the likes of Iggy Pop, Bob Dylan and Lou Reed along the way.

Dazzling and intimate, Me and Mr Jones provides not only a unique perspective on one of the most beguiling stars of our time but also a world on the cusp of cultural transformation, charting the highs and lows of life as one of the only women in the room as it happened.

About the Author:
Suzi Ronson is an author, songwriter, and former hairdresser and stylist. At fifteen, she left school and enrolled in the Evelyn Paget College of Hair and Beauty, going on to become David Bowie's stylist after helping create his iconic Ziggy Stardust hairstyle. She travelled the world with Bowie as his hairdresser, stylist and confidante. Ronson has also worked with Lou Reed, Iggy Pop and John Mellencamp. She divides her time between London and New York.

This hardcover, 320-page memoir is to be published on 4th April and can be pre-ordered now.
