Britain's V&A museum secures David Bowie archive, will make public in 2025.
LONDON, Feb 23 (Reuters) - London's V&A Museum said on Thursday it had secured the archive of late music star David Bowie for the nation, acquiring more than 80,000 items spanning his career that will be made available to the public from 2025.
The museum, which hosted the critically acclaimed "David Bowie Is" exhibition in 2013, will open The David Bowie Centre for the Study of Performing Arts at its V&A East Storehouse in east London, where fans, school pupils and researchers will be able to gain insight into the pioneering British singer-songwriter's creative process.
The archive features Bowie's handwritten lyrics for songs like 'Fame' and "Heroes", sketches, letters, costumes - including his Ziggy Stardust pieces - stage props, instruments as well as intimate writings and unrealised projects, many not seen before in public.
There are also more than 70,000 pictures, prints, slides, negatives, large format transparencies and contact sheets taken by famed photographers including Terry O'Neill and Helmut Newton.
"The archive is fascinating, it follows David Bowie's career and his life was art," Kate Bailey, senior curator and producer, theatre and performance at the V&A, told Reuters.
"It has insights into the creative process behind so many of his music videos, his songs, his stage shows, his theatre shows."
Bowie, a visionary rock star who straddled the worlds of music, fashion, drama and art for five decades, died from cancer in 2016, aged 69.
"With David's life's work becoming part of the UK's national collections, he takes his rightful place amongst many other cultural icons and artistic geniuses," a spokesperson from the David Bowie Estate, said in the V&A statement about the acquisition.
The museum said it secured the archive and could create the new centre thanks to the David Bowie Estate and a 10 million pound ($12 million) donation from the Blavatnik Family Foundation and Warner Music Group.
"What is extraordinary about the legacy is that this, we envision, will help inspire the next generation of creative pioneers and practitioners," Bailey said.
"We can reflect and see how Bowie changed the world and then for other people to pick that up and run with it is great too."
($1 = 0.8260 pounds).

An extensive archive of DAVID BOWIE's life, work and legacy will go on display to the public for the first time in 2025, it has been announced.
Acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), the exhibition will include more than 80,000 items that span six decades of the cultural icon's career.
They will be made available to the public through the creation of The David Bowie Centre for the Study of Performing Arts, which will open in Stratford's Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
It will allow fans and researchers alike to get up close and gain new insights into Bowie's creative process like never before, the V&A said.
The collection will feature handwritten lyrics, letters, sheet music, original costumes, fashion, photography, film, music videos, set designs, album artwork and awards.
It will also include instruments owned by the world-famous musician, as well as writings and unrealised projects never before seen in public.
Highlights include stage costumes such as Bowie's breakthrough Ziggy Stardust ensembles, designed by Freddie Burretti in 1972, Kansai Yamamoto's creations for the Aladdin Sane tour in 1973, and the Union Jack coat designed by Bowie and Alexander McQueen for the 1997 Earthling album cover.
The archive also includes over 70,000 photographs, prints, negatives, slides and contact sheets taken by some of the 20th century's leading photographers from Terry O'Neill to Brian Duffy and Helmut Newton.
Its acquisition by the V&A and the creation of the centre was made possible thanks to the David Bowie Estate and £10 million donation from the Blavatnik Family Foundation and Warner Music Group.
Dr. Tristram Hunt, director of the V&A, said: "David Bowie was one of the greatest musicians and performers of all time.
"The V&A is thrilled to become custodians of his incredible archive, and to be able to open it up for the public.
"Bowie's radical innovations across music, theatre, film, fashion, and style - from Berlin to Tokyo to London - continue to influence design and visual culture and inspire creatives from Janelle Monáe to Lady Gaga to Tilda Swinton and Raf Simons.
"Our new collections centre, V&A East Storehouse, is the ideal place to put Bowie's work in dialogue with the V&A's collection spanning 5,000 years of art, design, and performance.
"My deepest thanks go to the David Bowie Estate, Blavatnik Family Foundation and Warner Music Group for helping make this a reality and for providing a new sourcebook for the Bowies of tomorrow."
A spokesperson from the David Bowie Estate, added: "With David's life's work becoming part of the UK's national collections, he takes his rightful place amongst many other cultural icons and artistic geniuses.
"The David Bowie Centre for the Study of Performance - and the behind the scenes access that V&A East Storehouse offers - will mean David's work can be shared with the public in ways that haven't been possible before.
"We're so pleased to be working closely with the V&A to continue to commemorate David's enduring cultural influence."

The upcoming memoir by GEOFF MACCORMACK first announced last year in April is titled: 'DAVID BOWIE: ROCK 'N' ROLL WITH ME'.
This hardback, containing 240-pages, is to be published on 13th March.
David Bowie: Rock 'n' Roll With Me is Geoff MacCormack's remarkable photographic memoir, charting his lifelong friendship with David Bowie. Images bring MacCormack's stories to life, showing the places he and Bowie inhabited, the people they met and the adventures they shared. Beginning at Burnt Ash Primary school in the mid-1950s, the years go by in a whirlwind of discovering and making music. The book contains nearly 150 photos taken by MacCormack throughout the years, some never seen before: from touring the Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane shows and sailing to New York on a world tour, to Bowie's first major film The Man Who Fell To Earth and the recording of Station to Station and his Thin White Duke persona.
David Bowie: Rock 'n' Roll With Me is an incredible story, told with wit and candour. A must for all Bowie fans, it sheds a rare insight into a friendship where two men shared their love for music from the moment they met to their final goodbyes.
About the Author:
Geoff MacCormack, David Bowie's lifelong friend, joined Bowie's 1973 world tour as an additional back-up vocalist and percussionist, and later as a 'Diamond Dog' in '74 and what would be known as 'The Young Americans Soul Tour'. He also worked on the six albums from Aladdin Sane to Station To Station. After three years of touring, recording and travelling with Bowie, MacCormack started an award winning (Gold Clio, Ivor Novello) music production partnership with Simon Goldenberg who he met, coincidentally, in The Three Tuns pub, home of Bowie's earlier 'Arts Lab'. For over 20 years, they wrote music for high-end advertising, films and TV. Geoff now manages the use and sale of his photographs of David Bowie around the world and has exhibited in St Petersburg, the USA and the UK, including the hugely successful 'Rock 'n' Roll With Me' exhibition at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery from September 2020 through to May 2022.

Recollections of the 1972 Sheffield University gig...
DR. JURIJ PARASZCZAK (BSc Chemistry 1973, PhD Chemistry 1977).
"One [performer I remember] was the as yet relatively unknown David Bowie. He came into the Lower Refectory, long before the concert, to test out the sound system. As the evening folded over the refectory and darkness came through from the tall glass wall, someone from our lights' team targeted a spotlight on him and from the moment that he sat down on one of those laminated chairs in the middle of the stage all the hubbub of people going to take showers, passing through the refectory to the Union building, ceased. David Bowie commanded attention and it was obvious that he was unique and important to listen to. He came to the University on 18 February 1972."
BARRY EVERARD (owner of Record Collector in Broomhill).
"I was on the entertainment committee and very excited that he'd been booked. He was not scheduled to go on until about 1.30am. I was quite shocked to get into the room to find a guy manning the bar, and standing next to it four rather drunken lecturers chatting up four slightly inebriated girl students. I found myself the only member of the audience paying him any attention. It was amazing that somebody who would later be so central, and vital, in music, I had a virtual one-to-one with. When every David Bowie album came out, it was an event."
GLENN GREGORY (Heaven 17 and Woody Woodmansey's Holy Holy).
"I was about 12 when I first started listening to Bowie along with Bolan (Tyrannosaurus Rex) as well as bands like The Sweet and even Slade, I was a budding Glam Rocker, but Bowie's music always seemed to me to be something extra terrestrial. Words and meanings and hidden in poetic strangeness allowing personal interpretation and perfect for an impressionable eager music listener like me.
"I met Martin Ware and Ian Craig Marsh when I was about 14 and we had identical musical tastes. Bowie being one of the artists we were all most interested in. We found out that he was playing live at Sheffield University but that we were unable to get to see the gig, as you had to be a member of the Student Union to get in!
"However this did not deter us. With the aid of, can you believe it, a John Bull children's printing set and a trip to Boots in town to use the photo booth we set about making fake Student Union ID's. Actually, they were quite good and not only did they get us into the Bowie gig, we carried on using them for quite some time and saw some other amazing bands there. But I can honestly say none touched me as much as seeing David Bowie on stage that first time. It was a life changing experience. It made me want to part of the music industry, buy a pair of sky blue dungarees and dye my hair blue, it made me want to be David Bowie. Now all this time later I have the chance to live a boyhood dream."

Sold Out, in association with DUFFY ARCHIVE and Nomad Exhibitions, presents the world premiere of BOWIE TAKEN BY DUFFY at the Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Madrid (COAM). The innovative exhibition explores the creative processes of two of the most iconic artists of the 20th century: David Bowie and Brian Duffy.
Tickets go on sale on Tuesday 21st February through bowietakenbyduffy.com. The waiting list is for those who want to get the first tickets.
The sensational Bowie Taken by Duffy exhibition will transport visitors to the five historic and visionary photo shoots between the two artists between 1972 and 1980, often referred to as Bowie's "golden years". That decade of collaboration by the art duo, both at the height of their powers, produced the images of the characters that best defined Bowie's career: Ziggy Stardust, The Thin White Duke, Lodger, Scary Monsters and the iconic Aladdin Sane.
The Madrid exhibition features more than 160 original items from the Duffy Archive collection, many items seen for the first time. Visitors will be able to enjoy vintage and modern photographs from the shoots, music, video clips, artefacts and large-format ChromaLuxe prints. Also on display will be the original cameras, posters, albums, artworks, sketches, notes, drawings and costume designs. The exhibition will show the original Aladdin Sane Dye Transfer print (the sole source of the album image).
The exhibition will bring together numerous never-before-seen interviews on video with the key people who worked with Bowie and Duffy on the iconic photo shoots, musicians, producers, artists, make-up artists, hairdressers, actors, designers, journalists, partners and friends.
Together, Duffy and Bowie broke the visual boundaries of identity. In 1973 they created the timeless extraordinary cultural symbol that became the cover of the legendary album Aladdin Sane, crafted from Duffy's photograph of Bowie with the lightning bolt across his face, undoubtedly the image that best defined his entire career.
Highlights:
- The world premiere of the Bowie Taken by Duffy exhibition in Madrid.
- A retrospective of the iconic photo shoots that brought photographer Duffy and David Bowie together.
- More than 150 items from the Duffy Archive: music, video clips, photographs, large-format ChromaLuxe prints and never-before-seen video interviews.

On this day, 49 years ago, DAVID BOWIE released his anthemic 'Rebel Rebel' single in 1974.
Originally scheduled for release on 1st February, it was delayed by two weeks. The RCA music press advertisement stated: 'A Valentine Day Release', but in reality it was available the following day.
Despite no official promotional video or live appearance on Top Of The Pops, the song entered UK charts at #6 on 17th February, (one place behind Lulu's cover of 'The Man Who Sold The World'), and the following week (24th) it climbed one place to peak at #5, where it remained for another week.
The single was "played" twice on Top Of The Pops 28th February and 7th March. In case you were wondering, no we didn't get the now famous AVRO Toppop Dutch TV show performance.
David was scheduled to perform live on Top Of The Pops on 21st February, but was unable to appear. Earlier on 18th February, Robin Nash (TOTP producer) contacted Ronnie Fowler (head of EMI promotion) stating that he urgently needed a live replacement. So we got an unknown band named Queen performing 'Seven Seas Of Rhye' instead.
The single spent a total of 7 weeks on the Top 50 UK Singles Chart.
#6 - 17th Feb / #5 - 24th Feb / #5 - 3rd March / #13 - 10th March / #16 - 17th March / #36 - 24th March / #47 - 31st March.
Taking place at the ROSEHILL THEATRE in Moresby, Whitehaven, Cumbria next month on 11th March is 'When DAVID BOWIE Came to Rosehill - An Evening with Nicholas Pegg'.
Join Nicholas as he takes us on a journey to discover the fascinating connection between David Bowie and Rosehill. This event is rescheduled from 2020. If you already had tickets these have been rolled over to the new date, unless you have contacted us to say you are unable to attend. If you haven't heard from us please call the box office. Remaining tickets are now on general sale.
The story takes us back to 1968, when Bowie performed on the Rosehill stage with the legendary mime artist Lindsay Kemp. It was a collaboration which would make its influence felt throughout the rock star's glittering career, as we will discover in an illustrated talk with music and images, followed by a Q&A session.
