WHAT'S YOUR NAME?
16th September 2020

David Bowie and The Lower Third Davy Jones and The Lower Third On this day, 55 years ago, DAVIE JONES officially changed his 'stage' name to 'DAVID BOWIE'.

David said: "Back in 1965, I seriously wanted a name change. The first attempt of several. This one was adopted for about three weeks, I even did a photo session for it apparently. The name? TOM JONES."

He chose the name 'Bowie' because it was "the ultimate American knife. It is the medium for a conglomerate of statements and illusions."

The main reason for the change of stage name was because of the emerging fame of Davy Jones on the London theatre stage, who later became the lead singer of The Monkees.

IdbD HITS TWENTY-FIVE!
5th September 2020

Illustrated db Discography Big congratulations to RUUD ALTENBURG on achieving the twenty-five year online landmark of his excellent DAVID BOWIE website ILLUSTRATED DB DISCOGRAPHY.

Not many self-funding independent Bowie fansites have hit this age. Please visit and take in the wealth of knowledge and information available.

Independent fansites are a huge labour of love and dedication. I know first-hand. We all need your support.

The Illustrated db Discography tries to capture all of David Bowie's songs, from well-known CDs to sundry bootlegs and very rare acetates, between the years 1964 and 2020. This discography only covers songs that in one way or another are accessible to fans (albeit to very few in certain cases!) and thus excludes rumoured outtakes and acetates.

The heart of the discography consists of the Song section, which can be accessed from the alphabet at the bottom. Given for each song are the available versions and mixes (and where to find these), the album on which the original version appeared and information on available live performances. Catalogue numbers of singles, LPs or CDs refer to UK pressings, unless stated otherwise.

Check out the latest updates on Bowie releases over at illustrated-db-discography.nl

If you are a regular visitor you'll notice a shiny new revamp for better readability.

METROBOLIST DUE NOVEMBER
4th September 2020

davidbowie.com have announced details of the forthcoming METROBOLIST album release...

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE:

DAVID BOWIE - 'METROBOLIST' (AKA 'THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD') 50th ANNIVERSARY EDITION

REMIXED BY TONY VISCONTI WITH ARTWORK BASED ON ORIGINAL TITLE & DESIGN

RELEASED 6th NOVEMBER, 2020 ON LIMITED VINYL AND CD FORMATS, ALSO FOR STREAMING AND DOWNLOAD AT STANDARD AND HIGH RESOLUTION DOWNLOAD (96kHz/24bit)

David Bowie Metrobolist Parlophone Records is proud to announce release details for METROBOLIST (aka THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD) 50th ANNIVERSARY EDITION to be released on 6th NOVEMBER, 2020.

This November sees the 50th Anniversary of the release of David Bowie's The Man Who Sold The World in North America. The rest of the world would have to wait until April 1971 to witness Bowie's landmark entry into the 1970s, marking the beginning of a collaboration with guitarist Mick Ronson that would last through classic works including Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane - as well as the first in a 10-year series of indispensable albums stretching through 1980's Scary Monsters...

Originally titled Metrobolist, the album's name was changed at the last minute to The Man Who Sold The World - the original stereo master tapes were in fact labelled Metrobolist, with the title ultimately crossed out. The 2020 re-release of the album under its Metrobolist moniker has been remixed by original producer Tony Visconti, with the exception of the track 'After All' which Tony considered perfect as is, and is featured in its 2015 remaster incarnation.

The Metrobolist 50th anniversary artwork has been created by Mike Weller who was behind the originally intended album artwork which Mercury refused to release. The gatefold sleeve also features many images from the infamous Keith MacMillan Mr. Fish 'dress' shoot at Haddon Hall which would cause so much controversy when one of the shots was used on the cover of the The Man Who Sold The World album in the rest of the world in spring of 1971.

The original U.S. release of The Man Who Sold The World utilised some of the original Metrobolist design elements.

As with the Space Oddity 50th anniversary vinyl, as well as a 180g black vinyl edition, it will come in 2020 limited edition handwritten numbered copies on gold vinyl (# 1971 - 2020) and on white vinyl (# 1 - 1970) all randomly distributed.

For the 50th anniversary the 1970 story of the gatefold sleeve can be told in full with unused 'dress' photos. As Mike Weller explains:

"There is a story concealed in the carpet-scattered playing cards, David has thrown a plain 52 card deck in the air as though "casting the runes" but in a significant break from 60s Tarot divinations such as I Ching etc he casts runes using a four-suit pack and switches man-dress, along with the Court Card of the Future from right hand to left, signifying a new decade and new cultural era."

David personally delivered the Metrobolist concept and his gatefold plan to the record company for production and now with this release, it can finally be seen much closer to its original concept. Bowie speaking in 2000 said of the sleeve imagery:

"Mick Weller devised this kind of very subversive looking cartoon and put in some quite personalised things. The building in the background on the cartoon in fact was the hospital where my half-brother had committed himself to. So for me, it had lots of personal resonance about it."

DIAMOND DOGS TOUR REHEARSALS
1st September 2020

Check out DAVID BOWIE rehearsal footage from his 'The Year of The Diamond Dogs' tour in 1974.

Filmed on 8th June during the first day of stage rehearsals at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. It's believed to have been filmed by cameraman John Dove using a single RCA video camera in the theater's auditorium.

Although dimly lit throughout, this footage gives a candid glimpse into very early rehearsals for the Diamond Dogs tour, and it was the first opportunity to test out Mark Ravitz's stage set and to run through some of the complex dance sequences and special effects for the show.

BOWIE ODYSSEY 70
1st September 2020

Bowie Odyssey 70 by Simon Goddard New book BOWIE ODYSSEY 70 by SIMON GODDARD, is a 192-page paperback scheduled for publication on 29th October.

Synopsis: He starts the decade a teenage pop idol. But the one-hit wonder who sang 'Space Oddity' is still very far from becoming the star who will one day define the 1970s. Not when he still has a band to find, a manager to sack, a mentally ill brother to save, a wife to marry and a rival called Marc Bolan to beat. Not when David Bowie still has no idea who or what David Bowie is.

Starting at the beginning of Bowie's incredible ten-year odyssey changing the course of pop music, Simon Goddard's bold and expressionistic biography weaves time, space, rock 'n' roll and social history to relive Bowie's 1970 moment by vivid moment.

About the author: Simon Goddard was born in Cardiff in 1971. He grew up in Wales and Scotland and went to art school in the North of England before becoming a music journalist in London. He is the author of six books including Songs That Saved Your Life (hailed by The Guardian as "the best Smiths book"), Mozipedia (a Mojo Readers' Book Of The Year), Ziggyology: A Brief History of Ziggy Stardust, Simply Thrilled, the mock-picaresque biographical novel Rollaresque ("an excellent history of the early years of The Rolling Stones" - The Times) and The Comeback: Elvis and the Story of the '68 Special.
