RON DAVIES REST IN PEACE
30th October 2003

Sad news to report of the passing away of songwriter RON DAVIES aged only fifty-seven. Ron, died at his home in Nashville on Thursday of a heart attack.

As you all must surely be aware DAVID BOWIE famously covered one of Ron's songs It Ain't Easy for inclusion on his classic album 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars' album in 1972.

Ronny Wayne Davies was born on January 15th, 1946, in Shreveport, La. His father, local country singer Tex Dickerson, often took his eldest son to see and hear such legends as Hank Williams, Webb Pierce, Red Foley and Johnny & Jack. (The songwriter took the name Davies after he was adopted by his stepfather, Darby Alan Davies).

Davies got his first guitar when he was 11 and immediately began writing songs. After his success with the Wailers, he signed to A&M Records. His first album for the label was Silent Song Through The Land. He followed it with U. F. O., which was produced by Grammy-winner Tommy Vicarri.

In the 1980s, Davies moved to Nashville, where he became a writer for Cedarwood Publishing and later for Warner/Chappell. In 1999, he played the lead role in George Jones' music video, 'Cold Hard Truth'.

Other artists that covered his songs were Three Dog Night, Joe Cocker, Dave Edmunds, Anne Murray, Randy Travis, Ricky Skaggs, Vince Gill, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Jerry Jeff Walker, among many others. His most famous compositions are 'It Ain't Easy' recorded by Three Dog Night and David Bowie; 'Long, Hard Climb' for Helen Reddy and Maria Muldaur; 'The Man I Used To Be' for Jerry Jeff Walker; and 'Waitin' On A Dark-Eyed Girl' for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

Vidare Rösta!... wanna help DAVID BOWIE's 'New Killer Star' to peak as #1 in Sweden? Swedish entertainment fanzine, Labyrint, has a Top 20-list voted by the readers. And, one week ago 'New Killer Star' entered the list as #18. Last Friday, when the list was updated, the semi-classic Bowie track has gone up to #12. So, now, why don't you help us Swedes to get Bowie at the top spot? Just do like this: Go to www.labyrint.nu/topp20.asp - it's in Swedish, but all very simple... Pick 7 songs (there among Bowie, of course...), scroll down, write your name and e-mail address, click vidare (that's Swedish for 'go on'), and give the songs you've chosen points between 1 to 12 (Bowie you give 12, right?). Then, you cast your votes by clicking the rösta button (that's Swedish for 'vote') Next Friday, maybe Bowie will be #1... (Don't mind that the recent #1 song is called 'Lady Stardust'. It has nothing to do with the Bowie song) - (from Daniel)...

DAVID BOWIEs album Reality in the Finnish charts - the album peaked on the chart from #9 to #8. This week it sadly crashed from #8 to #38, but 'Best of Bowie' re-entered the chart at #29! DAVID AND IMAN TO PROMOTE TOMMY HILFIGER
27th October 2003

Press Release: Oct. 27 2003 - Tommy Hilfiger USA, Inc.

David Bowie and Iman to Appear in First Ad Campaign Together

Designer Tommy Hilfiger Taps Rock and Fashion Icons for New H Hilfiger Collection

Rock legend DAVID BOWIE and his cosmetic executive and supermodel wife, IMAN, will appear for the first time together in the launch advertising campaign of designer Tommy Hilfiger's new Spring 2004 collection, H Hilfiger, the company announced today. The union illustrates Hilfiger's long time love of fashion and music. In his search for "faces" to represent the new brand's collection, the designer looked for cultural icons that would strike an emotional chord across generations and around the world. He selected Bowie and Iman as the perfect representatives for the sleek, sophisticated campaign.

"David Bowie and Iman bring everything I'm looking for to represent this brand - music, style, elegance, creativity, sophistication - they're a living testament to all that influences and inspires me," said Hilfiger. "David is not only a rock 'n' roll legend and a true artist, he's also a style icon whose evolving look over the years has had a huge impact on the world of fashion and music. And Iman, in addition to being the ultimate supermodel and a style icon in her own right, is the ideal woman - smart, entrepreneurial, chic, beautiful, ambitious and creative. Together they communicate the essence of the H Hilfiger lifestyle perfectly, and I am honored to feature them in my new campaign."

"I very much admire Tommy's ability to weave so many influences into his work," said David Bowie. "Iman and I are thrilled to be working with him."

"I'm very taken by Tommy's new H Hilfiger line," said Iman. "And working with both David and Ellen Von Unwerth on this project is a real plus, and such a lot of fun."

Iman, Tommy Hilfiger and David The campaign was shot in Amsterdam in October 2003 by renowned photographer Ellen Von Unwerth and will appear in select American men's and women's magazines in April '04. The shoot took place between stops on Bowie's sold out European 'A Reality' Tour promoting his new CD by the same name. The campaign supports the launch of H Hilfiger, the brand's new pinnacle line. H Hilfiger is sophisticated, sexy and refined, and its high-end quality and signature detailing make it the gold standard among Hilfiger's diverse product offerings.

Bowie's worldwide 'A Reality' Tour will reach North America December 6, following his already sold-out U.K. and European leg, which runs October 7 through November 28. The U.S. and Canadian dates will encompass 20-plus cities.

HIGHLY COWARD PROJECT
24th October 2003

Italian musician and DAVID BOWIE fan ALEX writes in to say... After months of hard work I'm very proud of announcing that my "Bowie music inspired" project is taking its final shape. The album will be called 'Highly Coward' - the opposite of a couple of album titles you MIGHT recognise:) - and it's not a simple collection of Bowie covers.

Highly Coward Focusing mainly on the "Berlin era", I've tried to give a different point of view on the selected songs: 'Warsawa' is etnic-oriented, with lots of esotic instruments as didgeridoos and djembes; 'Repetition' and 'V-2 Schenider' have "big band" arrangements with full horn section; 'Breaking Glass' and 'Sound And Vision' are hard rock oriented, and more.

The album will be distributed by the newly-born BIT Records, an Italian label late this year, while in November 'Sweet Thing' will be given airplay to promote it.

Exciting ideas are spreading around the project, as bringing it to the theatres for a multimedia show involving young artist in different fields, from light designing to dance and film-making, but I'll tell you more about it in the near future.

'Highly Coward' is not only a devoted homage to the music of David Bowie (of whom I've been a hardcore fan for ages) but also a music project that leaves space for creativity and experimentation. This I wanted to share with my Bowie friends. I'll give you information soon about where to find the album.

A bit of a biography needed? Well, I'm working as a musician, arranger and singer here in Italy for theatre companies, dance projects and pop/rock music acts. Some of my songs have appeared in many compilations and I've just published a solo single, the first under the pseudonym 'Lexandher'.

From Alex.

DAVID GETS SLICK WITH EARL
23rd October 2003

Longtime DAVID BOWIE guitarist EARL SLICK will release a new solo album, Zig Zag, December 9th on Sanctuary Records.

The disc will feature four instrumentals and collaborations with Bowie, the Cure's Robert Smith, Spacehog's Royston Langdon, Def Leppard's Joe Elliott and Martha Davis.

Slick is currently touring as part of Bowie's band on the A Reality Tour, which hits the U.S. Dec. 6 for two months of shows. Bowie contributes vocals to the 'Zig Zag' track Isn't It Evening (The Revolutionary).

The album's first single will be 'Believe' featuring Smith, which is due to hit U.S. radio outlets in January. Elliott lends his pipes to 'Psycho Twang,' while Davis shows up on 'St. Mark's Place' and Langdon melodicizes on the title track.

"Each vocalist wrote his or her own melodies and lyrics," explains Slick. "Some of them got really rough demos from me and still managed to come up with amazing ideas. They really helped make this a unique record."

WORLD AIDS DAY BENEFIT CONCERT
22nd October 2003

Update: This news report from MTV.com is incorrect. DAVID BOWIE will NOT be appearing live at this concert in South Africa.

MTV.COM are reporting that DAVID BOWIE, Britney Spears, 50 Cent, Beyoncé, Pink, Shakira, Bono and many others will take part in a benefit concert for AIDS awareness on November 29th in Cape Town, South Africa. The extravaganza will be broadcast live over the Internet, and a 90-minute special will air on MTV on World AIDS Day, December 1. A simultaneous feed will be available at no cost to all TV and radio stations around the globe.

Proceeds from the concert will go to the Nelson Mandela Foundation. The event is expected to draw 40,000 people and will be recorded for CD and DVD release. In addition, the CD will feature around 15 new studio recordings, a spokesperson for the project said.

Mandela announced the concert Tuesday morning (October 21) at a press conference in London. Attendees included Ms. Dynamite and members of Queen and the Eurythmics, artists whose bands will also perform at the concert. Other acts that will play include Paul McCartney, Sting, the Corrs, Moloko, Paul Oakenfold with Shifty Shellshock and TC, Anastacia and African musicians such as Baaba Maal, Johnny Clegg and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. More artists will be announced soon.

The event will be called 46664, a very personal number for Mandela. "46664 was my prison number for over 18 years," he said. "I was imprisoned on Robben Island [and] known as just another number. Millions of people today infected with AIDS are just that - a number. They, too, are serving a prison sentence for life. No longer is AIDS just a disease, it is a human-rights issue."

The first song for the 46664 CD is "46664 (Long Walk To Freedom)," which was written by Bono, Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics and the late Joe Strummer of the Clash. The track was performed by Bono, Youssou N'Dour, Abdel and Dave Stewart, and can be heard starting Tuesday by calling (866) 614-6664. For every minute spent on the line, callers will have one dollar charged to their credit card. Called 'Give One Minute Of Your Life To Stop Aids', will encourage people around the world to dial a premium-rate number - 0906 0146 664 in the United Kingdom. They will be greeted by a message from celebrities, including Robert de Niro, Bill Clinton, David Bowie and Britney Spears, and hear one of a number of new songs recorded by Bono, Dave Stewart and others.

"I sort of had the idea, 'Why don't we use that prison number as a telephone number,' because if you use it as a telephone number globally, it's so easy for people to donate," Stewart said.

Additional tracks from the album, including one by Paul McCartney and one by Queen, will be previewed in the coming weeks.

For Queen guitarist Brian May, whose frontman Freddie Mercury died of AIDS in 1991, contributing to the cause offered a great opportunity to resurface with his former bandmates. "AIDS has become part of our lives, obviously ever since we lost Freddie, but it continues," he said. "And of course, as soon as Mandela speaks, the world listens. So, we had to be involved in this. Once we got down to South Africa and actually saw the magnitude of this tragedy, we became more and more committed. And the passion came from just knowing something had to be done."

By Jon Wiederhorn, with reporting by MTV Europe.

On it's fifth week (Sun 19th Oct.) DAVID BOWIE's album 'Reality' storms up 19 places on the Finnish chart to it's peak (so far!) at #8. Surely it's got something to do with the sold-out gig in Helsinki on 10th October - (from Risto)...

The tits flew and far and wide... Quite a bit of a db week on tv this week! Not only did he appear on the Fashion gig on Channel 4 on Sunday, and the on TOTP2 repeat last night, there was more than a tad on offer on Sunday night, on BBC2 at 9pm. Not that I'm a perv or anything, but I was curious about the sex magazine industry history, so I tuned in (Ed. So did I, but I was too embarrassed to mention it ;) ), and guess what, the producer must be a complete db nut! The whole soundtrack to all these images of Playboy, Penthouse and others was 'Let's Dance', Oh You Pretty Things, Fashion, Fame, Sound And Vision and Golden Years, all played 'on loop'. The show itself was boring (Ed. Yeah right LOL), but the db soundtrack was worth the price of admission alone! It's on for another 2 weeks, so get your vcrs ready for a quirky slice of db ephemera - (from Martin)...

THE BITS FLEW FAR AND WIDE...
19th October 2003

Reminder: Don't forget that DAVID BOWIE appears on the goggle-box tonight as part of the Fashion Rocks for the Prince's Trust concert from the Royal Albert Hall. In the USA, Virgin Records will this Winter reissue a number of DAVID BOWIE releases, including 'Black Tie White Noise,' the 1989 box set 'Sound + Vision' and remastered versions of 'Scary Monsters,' 'Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars' and 'Let's Dance.' Additionally, the label will re-release last year's 'Best of Bowie' with a bonus DVD. A DVD will also be added to the repackaged 'Black Tie White Noise.' - Read the full Billboard article here...

DAVID BOWIE has started work on his first novel. But don't hold your breath. "It'll never be completed in my lifetime, but I'm having a ball. I start with the first female trade unionists in the 1890s in the East End and I'm coming right through to Indonesia and the political problems of the South China Seas," he said in the latest issue of WORD magazine. "I'm picking up these extraordinary things I never knew. It's something I've been writing for the last 18 months and it's hideously hard."...

He has long been a keen DAVID BOWIE fan, counting a gold disc signed by the rock star among his most treasured possessions. But now CHARLES KENNEDY, the Liberal Democrat leader, is to make his Bowie obsession public and play one of his favourite tracks on the BBC. The Liberal Democrat leader, 43, will appear next week on Desert Island Discs, and will explain what makes Bowie his musical hero. Among the eight records he will select is "Young Americans", the title song from his 1975 album. There are other tracks on the album that might have been more apt for a politician, including "Win", "Can You Hear Me?" or "Fame", but he opted for "Young Americans" because of the time he spent in the United States as a Fulbright scholar. FASHION ROCKS FOR THE PRINCE'S TRUST
12th October 2003

As you all know DAVID BOWIE is to make an appearance on the forthcoming FASHION ROCKS FOR THE PRINCE'S TRUST gala concert in London. David will be beamed live into the Royal Albert Hall from his Rotterdam concert on 15th October.

The show will be broadcast on CHANNEL 4 television on Sunday 19th October at 22:00 for 2 hours and 10 minutes. It also is showing on Scottish Channel 4 just after midnight at 00:05.

Some of the other biggest names in music will be side-by-side with the biggest names in fashion. Beyonce Knowles, Robbie Williams, Bryan Ferry, Sheryl Crow, Kelis and more. And 17 international designers, from Armani to Prada to Yves St Laurent.

Sold out weeks ago, Fashion Rocks is one of the most exciting and revolutionary fundraising events ever. Presented by the glamorous pairing of Elizabeth Hurley and Denis Leary, this prestigious event will see the world's top fashion houses joining forces with the world's leading artists in the ultimate fusion of catwalk and concert.

Sir Tom Shebbeare, Chief Executive of The Prince's Trust [princes-trust.org.uk] says "Fashion Rocks is a hugely exciting fundraising event for The Prince's Trust. Music and fashion is a powerful combination and the fantastic support we have received from long-standing Trust supporters like Nicholas Coleridge, Managing Director of Conde Nast, and icons from the world of showbusiness will help us to give even more young people a second chance in life."

The Prince's Trust is the UK's leading charity for young people, helping individuals overcome barriers to get their lives working.

The world's top fashion models will showcase the collections of 17 international designers on a specially designed catwalk. Each show will be accompanied by live music from a different major rock act or singer.

The set design will feature an under-lit circular catwalk and the largest video projection screen ever used. The event will also be broadcast in primetime on Channel 4 and by more than 70 international stations.

(Ed. My guess is a db live rendition of 'Fashion', but maybe that would be a bit too obvious? I hope all you db fans attending the show in Rotterdam are gonna make a right royal racket with some 'Bowie' chanting).

THE BITS FLEW FAR AND WIDE...
11th October 2003

Make sure you pick up a copy of the UK SUNDAY EXPRESS newspaper tomorrow (12th Oct). On the front cover and inside the 'Sunday' supplement there is an exclusive article written by DAVID BOWIE in his own fair hand about living in New York. Also inside is another article written by Tony Visconti talking about with David and Marc Bolan - (from Glass Spider)...

In the November issue of VANITY FAIR there is an article by DAVID BOWIE entitled 'Confessions of a Vinyl Junkie.' David writes that he has a collection of 2,500 vinyl LPs and from these he has selected his "greatest discoveries" 25 albums "without chronology, genre, or reason, in no particular order" that are among those he just had to get on CD. Interesting write-up by David accompanies each album listed. Also, nice picture too. Their website blurb states: Confessions of a vinyl junkie: From a collection comprising thousands of albums, David Bowie chooses 25 vinyls that simply must go to CD. It's a soundtrack of the rock star's life - spanning gigs, affairs, and continents - in which James Brown and John Lee Hooker rub shoulders with Chinese folk, the Velvet Underground, and the Fugs - (from Emm)...

This coming Monday (13th Oct) DAVID BOWIE will feature in De 10 meest extravagante beroemdheden (RTL4, 21.30) he's placed at number 7 and the item has some interviews with fans who attended the Reality screening in Amsterdam - (from Noepie)...

For one week only AOL Broadband members can exclusively watch a special five-song set from DAVID BOWIE recorded on 23rd September for Sessions@AOL. The five tracks are: 1. New Killer Star / 2. I'm Afraid Of Americans / 3. Rebel Rebel / 4. Fall Dog Bombs The Moon (acoustic version) / 5. Days - (from TBB @ BowieNet)...

Check out this Spanish website that contains a short video of DAVID BOWIE performing on his 'A Reality' tour in Copenhagen - Click here to view - (from Guillermina)...

Frustration with the business of entertainment is nothing new for ERIC IDLE of ex Monty Python fame. He points out that his 1978 TV movie, the inspired Beatles spoof The Rutles, All You Need Is Cash, was difficult to finance, and few know that he actually made a Rutles sequel two years ago, 'Can't Buy Me Lunch.' You've never heard of it because it's sitting on a shelf at Warner Bros. The studio doesn't know how to market this TV movie, which features a host of stars - including Garry Shandling, Robin Williams, Tom Hanks, Steve Martin and DAVID BOWIE - talking about how Idle's fictional Beatles-esque pop group The Rutles influenced their careers. You can read the rest of the article here - (from Montreal Gazette)...

MORE SOUND + MORE VISION IN 4CD BOX SET
9th October 2003

With the critical success of DAVID BOWIE's latest and quite fabulous new album Reality, it's as good a time as ever to rediscover Bowie's incredible back catalogue.

With this in mind, EMI (Cat: 5945112) and Virgin have decided to facilitate your Bowie exploration by re-releasing Bowie's classic 1989 Rykodisc box set SOUND + VISION.

That's 70 tracks, which have all been remastered. They also promise that the new set will be "more competitively priced" than the original release, which commands a high price among collector.

GOTTA GET A WORD THROUGH
8th October 2003

Check out the latest issue of WORD magazine featuring DAVID BOWIE on the front cover and containing a seven-page interview with David by Paul Du Noyer.

David Bowie in Word Word is a new music and entertainment magazine. It comes from a new independent magazine publisher which was started by many of the people responsible for the launches of magazines like Q, Mojo and Empire.

It's been started in the belief that there are some people whose interests are as broad as they are deep, who want to read something more than a caption and are more interested in what's going on right now than in re-hashing the past.

Word is available from all good newsagents including: WH Smith, Borders, Tesco, Safeway, Sainsbury, One Stop, Dillons, Martins, Virgin and HMV.

Visit the Wordmagazine.co.uk website for more details.

NEW YORK'S A GO-GO AND EVERYTHING TASTES NICE
1st October 2003

Published today (1st Oct) is the eagerly awaited DAVID BOWIE: LIVE IN NEW YORK by photographer extraordinaire MYRIAM SANTOS-KAYDA, with foreword by David Bowie and published by powerHouse Books.

David Bowie Live In New York In October, 2002, David Bowie performed the New York City Marathon Tour. Five different nights in five different venues in each of New York's five boroughs. It was a tribute to New York, and a tribute to his fans. For the first time in over fifteen years, he let a photographer follow him on tour, capturing a David Bowie we've never seen before.

Myriam Santos-Kayda, acclaimed portrait photographer for the music industry, has captured David Bowie in rehearsal, in the dressing room, onstage and backstage, alone and hanging out with his band. Bowie, one of rock's most influential and enduring figures, reveals his complexity, humour, grace, and rigor as an artist and performer.

About the Marathon tour, Bowie writes, 'The last time I came through the Northeast it was on the Area 2 Tour. We played in amphitheaters, which are usually a good distance from the major cities. Marathon courses are strategically planned to bring the runners to the streets. I would like to repay the fans that travelled so far to see me by bringing my show to them. But most importantly, I could get home from all the gigs on roller skates.'

David Bowie: Live in New York is an intimate portrait of one of rock and roll's most exciting events of the decade.

About the Author: Myriam Santos-Kayda (aka Mask) has been a portrait photographer for the music and entertainment industry for the past ten years. In addition to David Bowie, she has worked with Trent Reznor, Marilyn Manson, Tool, Garbage, Ben Harper, David Grey, Lisa Kudrow, Billy Bob Thornton, Tricky, System of a Down, Incubus, and Rob Zombie, among others. Her work has appeared in Rolling Stone, Detour, Spin, Uncut, Entertainment Weekly, Q, Alternative Press, and New York Magazine. He record label clients include Capitol Hollywood, Sony Music, Columbia, Geffen, and Interscope Records.
