Guitarist EARL SLICK has written his memoir and it's scheduled for publication on 30th May.
Titled Guitar it has been written with Jeff Slate, this 400-page book will be available in both hardback and Kindle.
Pre-order this rollicking rock 'n' roll memoir of the last 50 years of rock history, from DAVID BOWIE's longest serving lead guitarist and legendary sideman, Earl Slick.
He's played with everyone from John Lennon to the New York Dolls - and he's got the stories to prove it.
Earl Slick was barely out of his teens when David Bowie hired him to play guitar on the ground-breaking 1974 Diamond Dogs tour. It marked the beginning of a relationship that would endure through thick and thin for the next forty years. Gracing classic albums like Young Americans, Station To Station and the 2013 comeback, The Next Day, Slick played on the tour that followed Bowie's smash hit Let's Dance album and was at his side for the epic Glastonbury show in 2000.
But it wasn't just Bowie. The young guitarist was in John Lennon's band at the time of the former Beatle's tragic murder. Other collaborations read like a roll call of rock 'n' roll royalty including Mick Jagger, The Cure, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Joe Cocker, Buddy Guy, Ian Hunter, David Coverdale and Eric Clapton. And in the '80s he became an MTV star in his own right with the success of Phantom, Rocker and Slick.
Through it all he lived the rock 'n' roll life to the hilt. Until it nearly killed him.
One of rock's great sidemen, Earl Slick was in the room when music history was made. Guitar takes us there, shining a light on superstars like Bowie and Lennon, while recounting the extraordinary story of the boy from New York City who became a real life Johnny B. Goode.

On this day, 34 years ago, ADRIAN BELEW and DAVID BOWIE were filming for the promotional video 'Pretty Pink Rose', directed by Tim Pope and produced by Lisa Bryer.
Filming took place in the Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh, Scotland, inbetween gigs in London and Rotterdam during the Sound+Vision Tour 1990.
The video features actress Julie T. Wallace, who found fame in her debut TV title role as Ruth in the BBC drama serial 'The Life and Loves of a She-Devil' in 1986.
Adrian Belew: "It was David's very generous idea that since we would be touring together for a year he would do something on my record to help promote it. He sent me a demo of Pretty Pink Rose. It presented me with quite a dilemma at first because I didn't like the demo! (I never told him) but I liked the song, so I went about recording an entirely different version of it and thankfully he loved it!"
If you missed SUZI RONSON on LORRAINE TV show this morning, you can catch up below or via streaming on ITV X.
Suzi's memoir ME AND MR. JONES: MY LIFE WITH DAVID BOWIE AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS hardcover, 320-pages is published next week on 4th April.
On this day, 48 years ago, DAVID BOWIE had this rather debonair mugshot taken by the Rochester Police Department when he appeared at the City Court for arraignment.
David was arrested a few days earlier for possessing marijuana in Rochester, New York on 21st March 1976.
The 5x4 inch photograph was found and rescued by Gary Hess from the trash during an estate sale of a retired Rochester police officer. It was later auctioned on eBay and realised $2,556 (£1,247.44 GBP).
The picture was taken four days after David was arrested, along with singer James Newell Osterberg, Jr. (aka Iggy Pop), bodyguard Dwayne A. Vaughn (22), of Brooklyn and Chi Wah Soo (20) of Rochester on drug possession charges.
The four were arrested at 2:25 a.m. in a three-room suite in the hotel at 70 State Street by four city vice squad detectives and a State Police investigator. They were all charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana. Police said they confiscated what they described as about half a pound of marijuana (182 grams). The charge was a Class C felony, carrying a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
They were busted at the Americana Rochester Hotel and held in the Monroe County jail for a few hours before being released. David's $2,000 bail was ordered in cash, and $2,000 in bond was set for the others.
David pleaded innocent in court and was eventually found not guilty by the Rochester City Court.

On this day, 37 years ago, DAVID BOWIE held a press show at the Piper Club in Rome, Italy to announce his upcoming Glass Spider World Tour and new album in 1987.
Two songs Bang Bang and '87 And Cry were performed, along with a 20 minute Q&A for the press.
The band for these promotional press appearances were: David Bowie, Carlos Alomar, Peter Frampton, Alan Childs, Carmine Rojas and Richard Cottle.
On this day, 39 years ago, DAVID BOWIE was the special surprise guest of TINA TURNER on her Private Dancer World Tour.
On the 23rd March 1985 at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, David and Tina duetted on three songs 'Tonight' and a 'Let's Dance' medley, which started off with the Chris Montez 1962 song of the same name, which then segued into David's own mega smash hit.
The show on the 23rd was filmed and recorded for a HBO special and future video release.
What has not been mentioned over the years, is the fact that David also turned up the NEXT evening (24th) and performed the same songs.
Want proof? Listen the recording of 'Tonight' performed on the 24th via tinaturnerblog.com - as you can hear it is completely different.
Parlophone Records proudly announces DAVID BOWIE ROCK 'N' ROLL STAR!, a 5CD and 1 Blu-ray audio set that explores David Bowie's journey from February 1971 through the creation of the Ziggy Stardust character, the recording of the iconic THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS album, and captures the international mania that surrounded the Ziggy phenomenon in the form of UK radio sessions and TV performances, as well as live tracks from Ziggy and the Spiders' 1st October 1972 show at the Boston Music Hall.
ROCK 'N' ROLL STAR!, containing 29 unreleased tracks, covers early songwriting demos, recordings from David's studio creation, The Arnold Corns, rehearsals at Bowie's then-home, Haddon Hall, BBC sessions, singles, live performances, plus outtakes and alternative versions from the original album recording sessions, which have been newly mixed by original album producer, Ken Scott.
Unreleased highlights include an alternative version of 'Lady Stardust', a version of the deep-cut classic 'Shadow Man' and an up-tempo take of The Who's 'I Can't Explain', which he would later slow down and cover for the PIN UPS album.
The audio-only Blu-ray disc features the definitive 2012 remaster of the original Ziggy Stardust album in 96kHz/24bit PCM stereo, plus the album and additional mixes from 2003 in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 as well as the singles, outtakes and alternative versions in 96kHz/24 bit PCM stereo.
The Blu-ray also includes a version of the ZIGGY STARDUST album called WAITING IN THE SKY (BEFORE THE STARMAN CAME TO EARTH) taken from Trident Studio tapes dated 15th December 1971, which features an alternative running order and four songs that didn't make the final album. This will also be available as a limited vinyl LP on 20th April, 2024 for Record Store Day. In addition, there is a 1-LP version of ROCK 'N' ROLL STAR! compiling the alternative takes and mixes.
ROCK 'N' ROLL STAR! also contains two books. The first is an extensive 112-page book with detailed liner notes, memorabilia, contemporary reviews and articles, rare photographs from Barrie Wentzel, Michael Putland, Mick Rock, Sukita and Alec Byrne, as well as brand-new notes and interviews with Ken Scott, Mark Carr Pritchett and David's plugger from the time, Anya Wilson. Accompanying the main book is a 36-page compiled reproduction of David's personal Ziggy Stardust era notebooks.
The first track taken from ROCK 'N' ROLL STAR! is 'ZIGGY STARDUST' (DEMO)' recorded by Bowie on vocal and acoustic guitar in 1971 at Haddon Hall in Beckenham.

• On this day, 11 years ago DAVID BOWIE released The Next Day album.
Initially released in twelve countries, The Next Day was available in various formats... Audio CD Deluxe Edition / Audio CD / Vinyl [2 LPs] digital and then later the Exclusive Japanese Blu-spec CD2.
If you never bought this album, it would make complete sense to purchase the later November 2013 release The Next Day Extra Collectors Edition 3-disc Box Set, which features more songs, remixes and a DVD featuring 4 promo videos.
• On this day, 59 years ago, DAVID BOWIE (aka Davy Jones) performed his first ever musical television appearance with The Manish Boys, when they appeared on 'Gadzooks! It's All Happening', which aired on BBC2 on March 8th 1965. The band performed their debut single 'I Pity The Fool'.
Other guests on the show included: Peter Cooke, Dorris Henderson, The Three Bells, Adrienne Poster and The Mike Leander Combo featuring The Beat Girls.
In the Radio Times dated 8th March 1965 it states: The Producer of Gadzooks, Barry Langford, is taking great care to keep his show up to date. "I'm not booking far ahead," he explains. "I'm waiting to hear the releases before I engage the artists. The scene is changing so fast that some of the guests will come as a 'complete surprise.' Davy Jones and the Manish Boys, who are appearing tonight, are likely to come into this category."
Little known outside the London clubs, they cut their first disc on March 5th, and their main claim to fame at present is that they have produced another 'new sound.' It is the 'sax sound,' and the group contains two tenor saxophones (one played by Davy Jones himself), a baritone sax, a lead guitar, bass guitar, organ, and drums. All the boys come from Maidstone in Kent - except for eighteen-year-old Davy, who hails from Bromley.
David's then manager Les Conn got some excellent wide press coverage with a spoof publicity story about the BBC not allowing David to appear on the show without him first getting his hair cut.
The story, some complete with photos David in a hairnet got national coverage and appeared in The Daily Mail, The Daily Mirror, Daily Telegraph, The Sun and local press Kent Messenger.
For those of you old enough not to remember... 'Gadzooks! It's All Happening' was a sequel to producer Barry Langford's 'Beat Room' and offered top pop acts as well as the dance troupe The Beat Girls. The show presenters were Alan David and Christine Holmes. The title changed five months or so later to 'Gadzooks! It's the In Crowd' when I'm reliably informed that Lulu co-presented the show for a short while. Later it was shortened to just Gadzooks! Alas no known shows are thought to remain in the BBC archives.
Oh and here's one for the real trivia buffs out there... actor Robert Powell's wife was one of the original Beat Girls dancers.
On this day, 49 years ago, DAVID BOWIE released his 'Young Americans' album in 1975.
Recorded primarily at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in August 1974, it was agreed early on to record as much of the album as possible live, with the full band playing together, including David's vocals, as a single continuous take for each song.
There were no fewer than 7 different "working" titles for the album mentioned in the press at the time, including: 'Shilling The Rubes' (which is circus slang for taking money off people), 'The Gouster', 'Somebody Up There Likes Me', 'One Damn Song', 'Fascination', 'Dancin' and 'Young American'.
For the album cover artwork, Bowie initially wanted to commission Norman Rockwell to create a painting, but retracted the offer when he heard that Rockwell would need at least six months to do the job. The album's cover photo was eventually taken in Los Angeles on 30th August 1974, by Eric Stephen Jacobs. The inspiration for the cover came from a copy of After Dark magazine (September 1974) which featured another of Jacobs' photographs of Bowie's then choreographer Toni Basil.

DAVID BOWIE - A LONDON DAY is a new FREE exhibition of photographs by KEVIN DAVIES to be held at The Fitzrovia Chapel in London.
The Fitzrovia Chapel is proud to announce a new exhibition of photographs titled DAVID BOWIE - A LONDON DAY by Kevin Davies, capturing David Bowie over the course of a single day in 1992, which will open on 1st March and run until 20th March as part of The Fitzrovia Chapel's Cultural Programme.
DAVID BOWIE - A LONDON DAY is curated by journalist, author, cultural historian and Bowie fan, Dylan Jones.
In late 1992, David Bowie was preparing for the release of his 18th studio album Black Tie White Noise. Photographer Kevin Davies was commissioned to photograph Bowie for a series of images which would be used to promote the album. The session took place at a studio space in Clerkenwell on Sunday 13th December 1992, with a selection of images subsequently approved by Bowie for press use, after which Davies placed the original rolls of film, contact sheets and prints in storage where they stayed for almost 30 years.
In 2020, Davies uncovered the boxes to reveal perfectly preserved film negatives of 400+ images from that single day with Bowie, the details of which had been eclipsed by the indistinguishable memory of a luminous presence. The original collection of 450 images captured a then 45-year-old David Bowie styled for Black Tie White Noise, plus a series shot late in the day when Davies asked to capture Bowie "just as you are."
The exhibition features 20 photographs from across the day with selected images presented as diptychs and triptychs to explore a meditation on the photographic archive. This exhibition takes Bowie as its subject, but it is equally a representation of the afterlife of analogue photography. It explores the intersection of the archive and creative remembrance. The collection is built around a number of Bowie's own selects taken from his mark-ups on Davies' original contact sheets and reveals a timeless, almost age-less David Bowie in the prime of his life.
Kevin Davies said - "In the anxiety of COVID 19 lockdown I found comfort in retracing my career through stored away negative boxes. I finally had the opportunity to do something I had wanted to do for such a long time; rediscovering past jobs in their totality. For me, this exhibition is a chance to show the photographic process beyond a commission."
Curator Dylan Jones said - "This is a fascinating body of work as it's a visual narrative that takes place over the course of a single session on a single day. Not only does it show David Bowie's extraordinary attention to detail, but it also shows Kevin Davies' ability to shape and catalogue that narrative. I love these pictures."
A tranquil world of art, fashion and history, The Fitzrovia Chapel has long existed as a place of calm and contemplation in Central London. The Chapel is a space where people can step out of the everyday hustle to explore and examine not only the visiting works of art, but also the beauty and detail of the Chapel itself.
Madeleine Boomgaarden, Director of The Fitzrovia Chapel said - "These quietly observed and very beautiful images of Bowie sit perfectly in the calm elegance of the chapel. We're delighted to host images of this London icon in the heart of the city he grew up in."
A private press viewing will take place on 29th February.
Venue: The Fitzrovia Chapel
Address: Fitzroy Place, 2 Pearson Square, London W1T 3BF, England.
The exhibition opens on 1st March and runs until 20th March.
Exhibition opening times are: Tuesday to Saturday: 11am - 6pm / Sundays: 12 noon - 5pm / Mondays: Closed.

The V&A is acquiring the David Bowie Archive. Comprising circa. 80,000 items spanning the entirety of Bowie's career, the archive is an important portrait of one of the most innovative and influential artists of our time. It includes costume, staging models and other performance artefacts, photography, fan art, musical instruments, personal notes, sketches and designs, make-up charts, song lyrics and sheet music, unrealised project documentation, writings and press coverage.
Rich and varied, it demonstrates Bowie's thought processes, the genesis and development of individual albums, the evolution of his own image, his collaborations with musicians, photographers, fashion designers and other practitioners, and much more.
The David Bowie Archive will be housed within a dedicated centre at V&A East Storehouse, one of two landmark sites developed at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park opening in east London in 2025.
For the 50th Anniversary of DIAMOND DOGS by BOWIE there are two Limited Edition Vinyl releases both available on 24th May.
There is the Limited Edition Half-Speed and the Picture Disc LP, pressed from the same master.
This new pressing of Diamond Dogs was cut on a customised late Neumann VMS80 lathe with fully recapped electronics from 192kHz restored masters of the original master tapes, with no additional processing on transfer.
The half-speed was cut by John Webber at AIR Studios.
The writing of the album was influenced by Bowie not being able to secure the rights for a theatrical production of George Orwell's 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' novel and the work of William S. Burroughs, whom Bowie had interviewed for Rolling Stone magazine in November 1973.
The songs on the album created an urban apocalyptic scenario with Bowie appearing on the cover as a controversial half-man, half-dog hybrid painted by the Belgian artist Guy Peellaert, utilising photographs by the world-renowned photographer Terry O'Neill.
Since its release, tracks from Diamond Dogs have been covered by artists such as Beck, Tina Turner, Duran Duran, Def Leppard, Joan As Police Woman, Dead Or Alive and The Struts.
The tracklisting runs as follows:
SIDE ONE:
Future Legend
Diamond Dogs
Sweet Thing
