MOONAGE DAYDREAM WOWS CINEMACON
27th April 2022

Trippy Bowie documentary 'Moonage Daydream' wows CinemaCon.
Experimental film blends songs, concert clips, fan footage and abstract images.

CinemaCon Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS - An experimental new DAVID BOWIE documentary featuring never-before-seen footage and the late music superstar's own narration was previewed at the CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas.

Moonage Daydream will premiere at next month's glitzy Cannes film festival before hitting theatres in September. It is the first film to be approved by Bowie's estate, which gave director Brett Morgen access to thousands of hours of archives.

"Bowie cannot be defined. He can be experienced," said Morgen.

"We've crafted Moonage Daydream to be a unique cinematic theatrical experience - to offer audiences that which they can't get from a book or an article."

Neither biopic nor traditional documentary, the film blends Bowie's songs, concert clips, extensive fan footage and a series of surreal, trippy and abstract images to create a "sonic and visual extravaganza," said producer Bill Gerber (A Star is Born).

Morgen, who previously made The Kid Stays in the Picture, spent two years trawling through the Bowie vaults.

He was aided by Bowie's longtime music producer Tony Visconti and the sound team behind Oscar-winning Bohemian Rhapsody.

CinemaCon attendees were shown extended clips from the movie, including Bowie performing Hallo Spaceboy and "Heroes".

"I think we took it on our shoulders that we were creating the 21st century in 1971," Bowie is heard explaining, over the top of the footage.

"We wanted to just blast everything in the past. We questioned all the established values and all the taboos. Everything was rubbish and all rubbish is wonderful."

The film will be released in the US by Neon.

WSFF - ART DECADE
26th April 2022

WSFF Art Decade The Wonderous Stories Film Festival Presents: ART DECADE

An evening of 1979-80 New York/David Bowie, hosted by London artist and Bowie aficionado Mark Wardel, featuring the World Premiere of new Edward Bell documentary at Watermans Arts Centre, London on Saturday 7th May at 7.30pm

The evening includes:
The World Premiere of 'Edward... work in progress 2022'
Q&As with Edward Bell and director Marcus Thompson
Screening of Bowie's 1979 iconic Saturday Night Live performance
Interview with Joey Arias live from New York
and much, much more.

'Edward... Work in Progress' - A Film by Marcus Thompson.

The film is about the work of Edward Bell, the artist who created the artwork for Bowie's Scary Monsters album, among others. Originally produced in the early 80s, the film was virtually unseen even at that time. Now Marcus Thompson, the film's creator has returned to his 40 year old project:

'I found the 35mm negatives to my film inspired by Edward Bell in the BFI Archives. The idea is to revisit the artist's world four decades later, as he looks back at the chronic, the creative, the static and chaotic... and a lingering love. Is this film set in the early 1980s, but haunted by the future? Or is it set in the present, and haunted by the past? In Edward's own words, 'In the early eighties I was a fully-fledged junkie and contributed nothing creative to your filming; I wish to right that wrong. Let's put it on a different level, with more depth and stretch the time-scale, then and now.'

The artist is now obsessed with landscapes and skies amongst other things, and the psychology of colour and emotion in the forces of nature; an unlimited source of real inspiration to him, and myself as a film-maker. Victor Hugo wrote that 'there is one spectacle grander than the sky, that is the interior of the soul', and that is what I'm attempting to portray. Illuminating nature's mystery, capturing skies in this fascinating interface between art and science, reinterpreting, reinvigorating and producing a new original film. Edward has told me 'I have plenty of time, commitment and imagination...' and so do I, and others, for this film. The project is the progression of a natural development that started when I made my first 35mm film. This new film enables me to take a fresh look at a subject that I have longed to return to and complete. The landscapes depicted in Edward Bell's new work are constantly changing as the atmospheric drama of the sky above alters due to the light, and Edward is always checking the sky for rapid mood swings, and painting what he sees. As a film-maker it is also an opportunity to capture, through time-lapse and macro lenses, both the heavens and the very quintessence of the oils that Bell uses to portray the structure and movement of clouds in the skies above him, and the accuracy of his depiction of this atmospheric drama. It is my chance tocapture the madness of thunder clouds, the sadness of a troubled life, the beauty of a dispersing mist, the gloom of darkening hillsides, and the approaching autumn of an artist's life.

Edward Bell studied art at Brighton College of Art, graphic design at Chelsea School of Art and photography at the Royal College of Art. He worked as a freelance photographer and illustrator for Vogue, Tatler and Elle magazines. He was commissioned for portraits for album covers for David Bowie (Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) and Tin Machine and Hazel O'Connor (Sons and Lovers). He has exhibited widely on the London art scene and his work covers many genres from life paintings to bronzes, from pop art to landscapes Bell was also the subject of a film by the artist Marcus Thompson, titled 'Edward'.

Marcus Thompson's film career is built on a solid foundation of drawing, painting and experimenting with magnetic tape, collage and any other medium he could find to express himself. Having made several experimental films during his time at art college in Bristol, he joined Granada Television as an assistant film editor in order to learn the craft of professional film post-production. After years as a picture and sound editor, Marcus has become an accomplished screenwriter, director and producer. His years of experience as a film editor proved to be an invaluable foundation on which to base his directorial career. He made a name for himself editing award winning SOUTH BANK SHOWS and several BBC classic documentaries including Michael Wood's IN SEARCH OF series. He began directing corporate films for French fashion house Marie Claire, Harrods and Honda, before a short period making music videos for bands such as Ocean Colour Scene, Jesus Jones, Runrig etc. He has produced and directed four feature films, MALEVOLENCE, MIDDLETON'S CHANGELING, the musical film noire THE BIGGEST THING THAT EVER HIT BROADWAY (In Competition Sitges 2018), and award winning, A PLACE TO STAY (GAIA Award at California's WCFF) the supernatural love story. Thompson's short film 'Wisteria Cottage' won Best Short Award 2021 Prague International Indie Film Festival. The short film 'Edward - Alive Again' is a work in progress.

Joey Arias is an American artist based in New York City, best known for work as a performance artist, cabaret singer, and drag artist, but also as a published author, comedian, stage persona and film actor. He also goes by the names Joseph Arias and Joe Arias.

Mark Wardel is a renowned artist and Bowie aficionado. He has exhibited his work internationally in galleries and museums including London's V&A museum. He has become widely known for his David Bowie life mask artworks, several of which were bought by David Bowie/Isolar in 2014 for inclusion in the official David Bowie archive and his work has been included in several prestigious club, art and Bowie focussed books and magazines worldwide. Mark Wardel is currently working with US writer Susan Compo on a book about the classic Bowie documentary 'Cracked Actor' due for publication by Red Planet Books in early 2022.

ME AND MR. JONES, MEMOIR DUE IN 2023
13th April 2022

Faber signs 'addictive and fascinating' memoir from DAVID BOWIE stylist SUZI RONSON...

Faber has landed Me and Mr Jones, a memoir by Suzi Ronson, David Bowie's stylist and hairdresser.

Publishing director Alexa von Hirschberg acquired world, all-languages rights, including audio, from Tom Wilcox at Counterculture. The book is scheduled for publication in 2023.

"Suzi Ronson was working in a Beckenham hair salon in the early 1970s when Mrs Jones came in for her weekly shampoo and set," the synopsis explains. "After being introduced to her son David and his wife Angie, Suzi soon found herself at the Bowies' bohemian apartment, Haddon Hall and was embroiled in their raucous world. She would create and style David's iconic Ziggy Stardust haircut, becoming the only woman working on the Spiders From Mars tours where - amid the groupies, costume blunders, parties and run-ins with the likes of Iggy Pop and Lou Reed - she would meet her future husband-to-be, Mick Ronson.

"A lively, addictive and fascinating memoir, Me and Mr Jones sees Suzi Ronson painting a portrait of 1970s Britain and charting the highs and lows of life as one of the only women in the room during one of cultural history's most thrilling eras."

Ronson is an author, songwriter and former hairdresser and stylist. At 15, she left school and enrolled in the Evelyn Paget College of Hair and Beauty, going on to become Bowie's stylist after helping create his Ziggy Stardust hairstyle. She travelled the world with Bowie as his hairdresser, stylist and confidante. Ronson has also worked with Lou Reed, Iggy Pop and John Mellencamp.

"When look back, I find it amazing we are still talking about David Bowie and the haircut I did in the 1970s," she said. "At the time, I never realised what a huge a star he would become or how truly talented he was. In this book, I chronicle the ups and downs of life on the road, with David and the Spiders from Mars, including Mick Ronson - my future husband. I'm grateful for my unusual life: I looked for adventure and managed to find it."

Von Hirschberg said: "Suzi paints a vivid portrait of the wild, bohemian world that she inhabited, along with David and Angie Bowie, Mick Ronson and others. It's a confessional, insightful and funny memoir, told from a rare female perspective for that particularly heady moment in popular music. Her voice completely won me over."

By Ruth Comerford.

Update: Now scheduled for publication on 4th April 2024.

BOWIE @ 75
10th April 2022

Bowie at 75 by Martin Popoff Update: Now scheduled for publication on 14th June 6th September is BOWIE AT 75 by rock journalist MARTIN POPOFF.

This hardcover, 208-page book will also contain bonus memorabilia including a gatefold Bowie timeline, a gatefold painting depicting 'A Party of Bowies', a previously unpublished 8x10 glossy print, and a pullout by famed gig poster artist Frank Kozik.

Synopsis: A unique and beautifully produced celebration of the iconic and beloved rock star, Bowie at 75 examines David Bowie's extraordinary life through the lens of 75 significant career achievements and life events.

Hendrix, Joplin, Mercury... few rock artists garner as much adulation after passing as they did in life. In Bowie at 75, veteran rock journalist Martin Popoff guides you through all 27 studio albums, as well as a curated selection of earworm singles. But Popoff delves deeper to reveal the events that helped chart the course of Bowie's career:

- Guest appearances with artists like Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Tina Turner, and Queen
- Key performances such as Live Aid
- Collaborations with an incredible roster of guitarists that included Mick Ronson, Adrian Belew, Robert Fripp, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Nile Rodgers, and Earl Slick
- Film and television roles
- Romance... and more.

From his eponymous 1967 debut LP and ending with Blackstar, released just two days before his death, Bowie is regarded as one of the most influential musicians and performers of the previous five decades, during which he constantly redefined himself. In examining 75 touchstones, Popoff gives you a unique view of Bowie's career arc from folkie to the breakthrough single 'Space Oddity' to his flamboyant glam rock alter ego, Ziggy Stardust, and beyond.

Illustrated with live concert and candid offstage photography as well as memorabilia including gig posters, 7-inch picture sleeves, and more, this incredible package also includes a gatefold Bowie timeline, a gatefold painting depicting 'A Party of Bowies', a previously unpublished 8x10 glossy print, and a pullout by famed gig poster artist Frank Kozik. The result is a stunning tribute to one of the most influential and admired stars in rock history - in a milestone year.

About the Author: At approximately 7,900 (with over 7,000 appearing in his books), Martin Popoff has unofficially written more record reviews than anybody in the history of music writing across all genres. Additionally, Martin has penned 57 books on hard rock, heavy metal, classic rock, and record collecting, including Contents Under Pressure: 30 Years of Rush at Home and Away, Rush: The Illustrated History, and Rush: Album by Album. He was Editor In Chief of the now retired Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles, Canada's foremost heavy metal publication in print for 14 years, and has also contributed to Revolver, Guitar World, Goldmine, Record Collector, bravewords.com, lollipop.com and hardradio.com. Martin has been a regular contractor to Banger Films, having worked on the award-wining documentary Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage, the 11-episode Metal Evolution, and the 10-episode Rock Icons, both for VH1 Classic. Martin currently resides in Toronto and can be reached through martinpopoff.com

ACC Art Books announcement

We're thrilled to announce that we will publish a new memoir from Geoff MacCormack, one of David Bowie's closest friends of sixty years, due for publication in Spring 2023.

Years later, MacCormack writes, his old school pal "phoned him and urged him to work with him". Within weeks, MacCormack was sailing to New York with David Bowie, and the rest is history.

Geoff said: "I am very happy to be working with the team at ACC Art Books who will not only publish my words but also my photos with great care. I'm excited to share my memories with the millions of people who loved my brilliant pal."

MOONAGE DAYDREAM: THE LIFE & TIMES OF ZIGGY STARDUST
7th April 2022

Moonage Daydream by David Bowie and Mick Rock 2022 Now scheduled for publication on 21st June is the eagerly awaited MOONAGE DAYDREAM: THE LIFE & TIMES OF ZIGGY STARDUST by DAVID BOWIE (Author) and MICK ROCK (Photographer).

This Anniversary Edition, hardcover, contains 328-pages and celebrates 50 years of Ziggy Stardust.

'The closest we'll ever get to a straight up Bowie autobiography - but who'd ever want anything straight-up from Bowie?' - Rolling Stone.

In 2002, David Bowie and Mick Rock created Moonage Daydream, the defining document of the life and times of Ziggy Stardust. Twenty years later, it remains the closest readers will get to understanding Bowie through his own words.

Alongside over 600 photographs taken by Mick Rock, Bowie's personal and often humorous commentary gives unprecedented insight into his work and the creation of his most memorable persona. Readers can see how Bowie singlehandedly challenged and elevated 1970s culture through his style, his inspirations ranging from Kubrick to Kabuki, and his creative spirit, which endures through the decades. Moonage Daydream is the essential David Bowie book.

First published as a signed limited edition, Moonage Daydream sold out in a matter of months and became lore among David Bowie fans. Now, on the 50th anniversary of Bowie's acclaimed album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars, the book is available again. Published in a new larger format, this uncut edition keeps to Bowie and Rock's original vision, allowing us to explore Moonage Daydream the way the authors intended.

'This is a book of extraordinary photographs. Ziggy Stardust blazed briefly but intensely, and I am delighted to see his life and times as a rock 'n' roll star immortalised in this book.' - David Bowie.

Moonage Daydream by David Bowie and Mick Rock 2022   Moonage Daydream by David Bowie and Mick Rock 2022

REVIEWS:
Moonage Daydream by David Bowie and Mick Rock 2022 'It's a massive coffee-table art book, with lavish images of Bowie in the Seventies from photographer Mick Rock. But the main attraction of Moonage Daydream is the text by the man himself. He's in top form, whether he's shopping for shoes with Cyrinda Foxe (who teaches him to wear "palm-tree'd f**k-me pumps") or sipping tea with Elton John ("We didn't exactly become pals, not really having that much in common, especially musically"), or partying it up with Mick Jagger ("I have absolutely no recollections of this party at all"). The closest this world will ever get to a straight-up Bowie autobiography - but who'd ever want anything straight-up from Bowie?' - Rob Sheffield, 'Rolling Stone's Greatest Rock Memoirs of All Time', Rolling Stone.

'There is more than enough for both the casual Bowie fan and the obsessive. These photographs trace the birth of one of the biggest, most influential pop ideas ever: the notion that a pop performer could, on record as well as on stage, reinvent himself creatively by inhabiting various personas.' - Sean O'Hagan, 'Pop's first Space Invader', The Guardian.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
In 1972 David Bowie released the instant classic The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars - a record without which any Greatest Albums of All Time list is simply incomplete. 1972 would be the year that Bowie ascended to international superstardom. Bowie's extra-terrestrial Rockstar creation Ziggy Stardust staged one of the most spectacular and innovative live shows to date, expanding the parameters of the live rock show and singlehandedly launching a worldwide glam explosion.

Legendary rock photographer Mick Rock is often referred to as 'The Man Who Shot The Seventies', for his iconic images of Syd Barrett, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Queen, Sex Pistols, The Ramones, Blondie, Rocky Horror Picture Show, etc. London born, he resided in New York for 35 years and shot over 100 album covers.

You can pre-order Moonage Daydream: The Life & Times of Ziggy Stardust now and save 12%.
