RICOCHET: DAVID BOWIE 1983 - DELUXE EDITION
25th October 2018

David Bowie 1983 Published next month on 1st November is the standard hardback edition of RICOCHET: DAVID BOWIE 1983 by photographer DENIS O'REGAN.

If like me, you can't afford the £3,000 special collectors' limited edition, you can now pre-order the alternative hardcover edition.

From the Inside Flap: A breathtaking, never-before-seen glimpse into life on tour with David Bowie, by the late singer's official tour photographer In 1983 David Bowie set out on the Serious Moonlight Tour, his biggest ever. On the road with him was his official photographer, Denis O'Regan. Few artists and photographers have had such a close touring relationship. This book is the result: a never-before-seen photographic portrait of a year with Bowie, from the theatre of performance to his most unguarded moments. Introduced by O'Regan and with every single image personally approved by Bowie, this is an intimate view of an icon at the height of his fame.

Synopsis: In 1990, on their third world tour together, photographer Denis O'Regan told David Bowie what inspired him to take up rock photography. 'It's because of you,' said Denis. He was inspired by Bowie's 1973 Ziggy Stardust concert at the Hammersmith Odeon. Bowie's response: 'Nah, you'll probably tell Bono the same thing tomorrow night.'

In Ricochet: Bowie 1983, the official photographer of one of the most celebrated musicians of all time reveals intimate stories and pictures that offer an exclusive insight into David Bowie the man and musician. Taken on the 'Serious Moonlight Tour' - Bowie's largest ever tour that took in 98 concerts in over 60 cities - Denis's photos provide a thrilling, intimate view of life on the road with a unique pop icon. From capturing the theatre and mime of Bowie on stage to unguarded snapshots of the artist at his most human, every single image in Ricochet was personally approved by Bowie himself, and the result is a music photography book like no other.

Witty, poignant, and beautifully produced, Ricochet is a rare and spirited look into the life of an inimitable artist, whose music and performances have inspired - and continue to inspire - generations of listeners around the world.

This hardcover edition of Ricochet: David Bowie 1983: An Intimate Portrait containing 328-pages is available to pre-order NOW!

Update:#2 The deluxe edition is now not happening at the moment. Published on 7th November is the limited deluxe edition RICOCHET: David Bowie 1983 Deluxe Edition (Hardcover) RRP £150.00 - you can pre-order now and save a massive 35%!

THE KENNY EVERETT VIDEO SHOW COMPLETE DVD BOX SET
25th October 2018

The Kenny Everett Video Show DVD Released on DVD next month on 19th November is THE KENNY EVERETT VIDEO SHOW box set.

This complete SIX disc set runs for 935 minutes (15-and-a-half hours) and features all four series with every episode, including the three New Year specials.

DAVID BOWIE first appeared on the show (Series 2: Episode 9) performing a live version of 'Boys Keep Swinging' on 23rd April 1979.

Bowie also appeared in the one-hour long New Year's Eve Special (Will Kenny Everett Make It To 1980?) in 1979, performing an acoustic version of 'Space Oddity' along with a funny sketch featuring 'Angry Of Mayfair' (see promo trailer below).

Erupting onto television during the summer of '78, The Kenny Everett Video Show was an instant ratings grabber propelling the subversive, impish DJ to the superstardom he had always deserved!

Kenny's anarchic mix of manic sketches, musical guests and dance routines courtesy of raunchy booty-shakers Hot Gossip created must-see television, his comic genius running riot as he unleashed a line-up of much-loved, much-mimicked characters including gobby rocker Sid Snot, Gallic sophisticate Marcel Wave and the improbably-handed evangelist, Brother Lee Love!

The shows - written by Kenny Everett with Barry Cryer and Ray Cameron (father of Michael McIntyre) - followed Everett's controversial career on radio that spanned the likes of pirate station Radio London, BBC Radio 1 and Capital Radio.

Available for the first time, this set contains all four series and three New Year specials that Kenny made for Thames Television and there's one thing you can be certain of - that it's all done in the best possible taste!

You can pre-order The Kenny Everett Video Show [DVD] NOW!

BOWIE AT GLASTONBURY 2000 ON BBC FOUR
15th October 2018

The forthcoming DAVID BOWIE AT GLASTONBURY 2000 one-hour programme will be broadcast on Friday evening on 26th October at 22.55 until 00.00 on BBC FOUR.

On Sunday 25th June 2000, David Bowie closed Glastonbury with a two-hour performance. Only half an hour or so of that stunning set was broadcast on BBC television that night at Bowie's insistence. At the time, the BBC were heavily criticised for coming off Bowie after broadcasting the first five songs of the set live and only returning for a couple of encore songs at the end of the show. Fortunately the cameras kept rolling and captured the whole set.

This programme features an hour of highlights from that performance, including such previously unbroadcast hits as Ashes To Ashes, Starman and Let's Dance. Bowie was returning to the festival for the first time since 1971. His star was not in the ascendant after the Tin Machine era and such 90s solo albums as 1.Outside, Earthling and 'hours...'. But from the moment he walked out on the Pyramid Stage, resplendent in an Alexander McQueen frock coat with his hair in Hunky Dory mode, and launched into Wild Is The Wind, it was clear that he had decided to embrace and fully restate both his catalogue and his legend. Arguably it was Bowie's greatest live performance since the 70s.

The programme will also be available shortly after broadcast on the BBC iPlayer.

DAVID BOWIE DUBLIN FESTIVAL 2019
10th October 2018

The first details of the DAVID BOWIE DUBLIN FESTIVAL 2019 have been revealed via HOTPRESS.

The annual Dublin Bowie Festival returns for its fourth edition from Monday January 7th until Sunday January 13th and again, fans of the legendary singer are in for a treat with the week-long event set to celebrate 50 years of Space Oddity and the greatest Starman of our time.

Kicking off the festival on Monday 7th January is a real treat for Bowiephiles; a world premiere exclusive Festival performance of the Space Oddity album from start to finish (and other songs from the Bowie Universe) by the I Heart Bowie ensemble alongside the renowned Trinity Orchestra and some very special guest singers in the hallowed National Concert Hall.

The festival is also associating with MCD as they host the Irish performance of A Bowie Celebration in The Olympia Theatre, Wednesday 9th January. Comprising 5 key members of Bowie's band over his long career - Mark Plati, Carmine Rojas, Earl Slick, Dubliner Gerry Leonard and Bowie's longest serving sidekick, pianist Mike Garson - A Bowie Celebration bring an unforgettable and critically acclaimed evening of Bowie songs with world-class vocalists and an ever rotating mix of hits and deep cuts. Gerry was our first guest of honour at DBF 16 and his continual championing of the Festival and background help is always much appreciated.

The festival will also have The Lighthouse Cinema involved again and their Bowie related programme ticks all the boxes as Space lovers can enjoy seeing Bowie's cult sci-fi classic The Man Who Fell To Earth and the movie that inspired Bowie to introduce Major Tom to the universe, Stanley Kubrick's 2001 - A Space Odyssey. We're particularly pleased that they are also screening Moon, the superb debut feature film of one Duncan Jones, Bowie's son. For family fun it's hard to beat the 80s musical fantasy Labyrinth and its noon screening on Saturday 12th kicks off a family friendly day of activities in Smithfield Square that includes talks, workshops and experiments as we engage our inner scientist while gazing up at the stars from inside a Mobile Planetarium looking at The View from Major Tom's Tin Can.

Last year's festival featured in excess of 8,000 with Bowie fans travelling from as far as Australia, the U.S. and continental Europe and the UK to attend, along with thousands of Bowie lovers from all over Ireland. We are delighted to have the support of Dublin City Council and Visit Dublin for DBF 19 and are extremely grateful of the continued backing and expertise that they bring to the Festival.

More exciting events and ticket details will also be revealed at the launch. For further details check out dublinbowiefestival.ie

A SINGER DEVOID OF PERSONALITY
9th October 2018

If you watched the BBC promo trailer of the forthcoming DAVID BOWIE: THE FIRST FIVE YEARS documentary where THE LOWER THIRD drummer PHIL LANCASTER was reading out aloud from the BBC audition report, here is the document in full.

BBC audition report The David Bowie and The Lower Third audition tape was recorded on 2nd November 1965 and featured three songs: 'Out Of Sight' (Ted Wright aka James Brown), Baby That's A Promise' (David Bowie) and ''Chim Chim Cher-ee' (Richard Sherman and Robert Sherman).

The tape was heard and reviewed by the 'Talent Selection Group' which consisted of 7 BBC reviewers on 16th November. Two said YES, five said NO.

'Out Of Sight' will surely be a cover of the James Brown song and 'Baby That's A Promise' was a Bowie original composition.

Their version of 'Chim Chim Cher-ee' was performed as a 'sad ballad', I'm sure DB loved the 1965 John Coltrane Quartet version, as well as the Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews version made famous on the 'Mary Poppins' movie soundtrack.

Take a listen to the originals of the cover songs below...

DAVID BOWIE SPECIALS ON THE BBC
8th October 2018

David Bowie specials coming to BBC Two and BBC Four.
Date: 08.10.2018 - Category: BBC Two; BBC Four; BBC Music; BBC Studios; Commissioning

A new landmark film, David Bowie: The First Five Years, is coming to BBC Two in 2019 and BBC Four will broadcast David Bowie at Glastonbury 2000 in October 2018.

David Bowie: The First Five Years is the final part of the trilogy of films, all made by BBC Studios Production, looking back on the legendary performer's life and work. It follows the acclaimed and award-winning David Bowie: The Last Five Years in 2017 and David Bowie: Five Years in 2013, all produced and directed by Francis Whately.

The film - which will air 50 years after the release of Space Oddity - is a 90 minute film exploring the Bowie before Ziggy, a time when so many of the ideas that would ultimately turn him into the icon he later became were germinated. Starting in 1966, soon after David Jones changed his name to Bowie, the film traces his interest in everything from Holst to Pinky and Perky, from Anthony Newley to Tibetan Buddhism, and how he used all these influences to create not only Ziggy Stardust, but the material for his entire career.

Speaking in one of the archive clips featured, Bowie says: "I spent all my formative years adopting guises and changing roles, just learning to be somebody. I wanted to be accepted as David Bowie - a person that you will always watch to see what kind of thing he is doing."

Francis Whately says: "Making this trilogy has been an incredible experience for me, unearthing rare recording, footage and archive, and the privilege of speaking to so many of his friends and collaborators who were so open in talking about the Bowie they knew, loved and admired so much. He is possibly now even more famous in death than in life and I hope this film will bring some new understanding to this great artist from the early years of his incredible life."

The film also unearths a report, deep from the BBC Archives, following a BBC audition on Tuesday 2 November 1965 of a band called David Bowie and the Lower Third. Their audition material included Chim-Chim-Cheree as well as an original number called Baby That's A Promise. The BBC's 'Talent Selection Group' describe him as having "quite a different sound", but also "no personality", "not particularly exciting" and "will not improve with practice". The BBC later appears to have changed its mind!

Patrick Holland, Channel Controller, BBC Two, says: "Francis Whately has already created two stunning films about transformative chapters in the extraordinary life of David Bowie. This third film completes that trilogy with the most important and surprising period, the first five years. We are delighted to play it in BBC Two."

Jan Younghusband, Head of Music TV Commissioning for BBC Music, says: "We were so honoured to work with David Bowie in his lifetime, and so delighted to be able to continue his story on the BBC with this new film, which looks at the incredible journey of his rise to fame, including first time testimony from the people with him along the way in the early days, and also to show his unique performance at Glastonbury."

David Bowie at Glastonbury 2000 relives the night of Sunday 27 June 2000, when Bowie closed Glastonbury with a two-hour performance. At Bowie's insistence, only around half an hour of that stunning set was able to broadcast on the BBC - the first five songs were aired live followed by encore tracks at the end of the set. Fortunately the cameras kept rolling and captured the whole set. Now BBC Four are screening an hour of highlights from that career-extending performance, including such previously unbroadcast hits as Ashes To Ashes, Starman and Let's Dance.

Bowie was returning to the festival for the first time since 1971. His star was not in the ascendant after the Tin Machine era and such 90s solo albums as Outside, Earthling and 'hours...', but from the moment he walked out on the Pyramid Stage resplendent in a an Alexander McQueen frock coat with his hair in Hunky Dory mode and launched into Wild Is The Wind, it was clear that Bowie had decided to embrace and fully restate both his catalogue and his legend. Arguably it was his greatest live performance since the 70s - one that still both summarises and embraces his legend.

In David Bowie: The First Five Years, with remarkable, unheard audio recordings, archive and unpublished documents alongside unique and exclusive interviews with David's family, girlfriends, boyfriends and early collaborators, the film will tell how David Robert Jones became David Bowie, how David Bowie became Ziggy and how Ziggy became immortal, changing the musical landscape as he did so. This is the story that finally makes sense of one of the greatest icons of the twentieth and twenty first centuries.

Contributors include Bowie's first cousin and lifelong-friend Kristina Amadeus and former girlfriend and muse Hermione Farthingale - both of whom have never before been filmed talking about him; the late Lindsay Kemp in his last filmed interview, lifelong friend and producer Tony Visconti, former girlfriend and friend Dana Gillespie, lifelong friends Geoff MacCormack and George Underwood, Bowie's producer Mike Vernon, Bowie's early producer Tony Hatch, and Woody Woodmansey, the last remaining Spider from Mars.

Further highlights in the film include a deconstruction of Bowie classics including Space Oddity and The Man Who Sold The World through the eight track masters and previously unheard demos, alongside master tapes from songs that Bowie wanted to forget, such as The Laughing Gnome - a song that has a surprising link to the Velvet Underground; plus never before seen footage of Bowie's journey through Siberia in 1973, just before he kills Ziggy off at the Hammersmith Odeon later that year.

David Bowie: The First Five Years will show how the Sixties were the blueprint for the Bowie of the future. How without the influences, struggles and failures of the Sixties, there would have been no Ziggy Stardust, but there would also have been no Halloween Jack, The Thin White Duke, no Low or "Heroes" and The Elephant Man, or even Jareth the Goblin King and certainly no Blackstar.

It was the Sixties that made Bowie the multi-faceted artist whose career influenced generation after generation of musicians. The Bowie of the Sixties was possibly the most fascinating Bowie of them all.

The BAFTA Award winning first film, David Bowie: Five Years, was broadcast in 2013 and explored five key years from Bowie's heyday in the Seventies and early Eighties. The second, David Bowie: The last Five Years, was broadcast in 2017 and gave an extraordinary insight into Bowie's whole career through the prism of his autobiographical last works.

David Bowie: The First Five Years is distributed internationally by BBC Studios.

David Bowie: The First Five Years is ordered Patrick Holland, Controller BBC Two, and commissioned by Jan Younghusband, Head of Music TV Commissioning for BBC Music. Producer/Director is Francis Whately and Executive Producer is Phil Dolling for BBC Studios.

David Bowie at Glastonbury 2000 is ordered by Cassian Harrison, Channel Editor BBC Four, and commissioned by Jan Younghusband for BBC Music. Producer is Mark Cooper for BBC Studios.

From KA at the BBC Media Centre.

2xCD/DVD, 3xLP, 2CD, DIGITAL, HIGH RESOLUTION (48/24) DIGITAL
RELEASED 30th NOVEMBER, 2018

"Not only the greatest Glastonbury headline performance but the best headline slot at any festival ever" NME.

All formats feature Life On Mars?, Changes, Let's Dance, Under Pressure, "Heroes", Fame, China Girl, Ashes To Ashes, Ziggy Stardust, Rebel Rebel, Station To Station, Golden Years, Absolute Beginners and many more.

Glastonbury 2000 CD and DVD 2nd OCTOBER 2018 - LONDON: Parlophone Records in association with BBC Studios and Glastonbury Festivals Ltd. are proud to announce DAVID BOWIE 'GLASTONBURY 2000' on 2CD/DVD, 3LP, 2CD and standard and high resolution digital formats documenting Bowie's legendary Sunday night headline performance on 25th June at the most famous festival on earth.

The package includes the full 21 song greatest hits set and for the first time, a DVD of the entire show (only 37 minutes of which has ever been broadcast on TV) including the Glastonbury performance of "Heroes", a highlight of the record breaking 'David Bowie Is...' exhibition and the only track that has been previously released.

All formats feature David's diary, originally written for Time Out, which documents him preparing for the show in his own inimitable manner:

"As of 1990 I got through the rest of the 20th century without having to do a big hits show. Yes, yes, I know I did four or five hits on the later shows but I held out pretty well I thought... big, well known songs will litter the field at Glastonbury this year. Well, with a couple of quirks of course."

In addition to newly mastered audio and upgraded video DAVID BOWIE 'GLASTONBURY 2000' features new artwork from Jonathan Barnbrook (who worked with Bowie on the sleeves for Heathen, The Next Day and ★) and notes from the renowned author and Bowie fan Caitlin Moran who reviewed the show for The Times.

The package features photos of Bowie resplendently dressed in a 3/4 length one-of-a-kind Alexander McQueen frock coat, the pattern of which was made to echo the hat (the famous 'bipperty-bopperty hat' mentioned in the song Queen Bitch) and worn by David at his Glastonbury Fayre debut in 1971.

Glastonbury co-organiser Emily Eavis commented "I often get asked what the best set I've seen here at Glastonbury is, and Bowie's 2000 performance is always one which I think of first. It was spellbinding; he had an absolutely enormous crowd transfixed. I think Bowie had a very deep relationship with Worthy Farm and he told some wonderful stories about his first time at the Festival in 1971, when he stayed at the farmhouse and performed at 6am as the sun was rising. And he just played the perfect headline set. It really was a very special and emotional show."

Emily's father Michael, the founder of the festival who first met David at Glastonbury in 1971 said "He's one of the three greatest of all-time: Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and David Bowie."

BOWIE IN UNCUT MAGAZINE
1st October 2018

Uncut magazine November 2018 For the November issue of UNCUT magazine DAVID BOWIE graces their front cover and inside is an eleven-page feature, along with TWO free art prints including one exclusive, previously-unseen image.

To REEVES GABRELS, the superstar years of his friend and collaborator David Bowie were a period of unlikely but essentially enlightening transformation. "He wasn't a pop star," he tells ROB HUGHES in this month's cover story. "He just happened to be able to make some pop records every now and then. That's how he kept the machine running. But he was an artist. The function of entertainment is to make you feel good, the function of art is to make you feel."

Reeves is one of Bowie's many confidants and co-conspirators that Rob has spoken to as part of his fascinating deep trawl of Bowie's most contentious decade.

There is further wisdom and insight from CARLOS ALOMAR, PETER FRAMPTON, NILE RODGERS and many more who argue that this period was fundamentally necessary in shaping the work that followed: as vital a part of Bowie's legacy, in its way, as his storied '70s.

This issue goes on sale from tomorrow 20th September.
