ISLE OF WIGHT FESTIVAL 2004
30th November 2003
DAVID BOWIE has jumped at the chance to headline the Isle Of Wight Festival next year. The star said he has longed to play the legendary event which was revived in 2002.
Bowie said of the show: "I was so envious of other acts that got to do the other Isle of Wight Festivals - it is really coming back."
The festival hosted performances by The Who, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix and The Doors in its earlier incarnation. It was held each summer from 1968 to 1970. The next festival will take place from June 11th to 13th.
Bowie added: "This is the very first time I have been to the Isle of Wight Festival. Obviously I've been to the Isle of Wight, it's a fabulous place - I used to go there on holiday when I was a kid. I jumped at it, it is a smashing thing to do."
Bowie - who has been a Glastonbury headliner in the past - said he loved the vibe of festivals... "It is definitely one of my favourite ways to work - I love older and younger bands, and for a guy like me it is great to see the mix."

DAVID TO HEADLINE T IN THE PARK
30th November 2003
Rock god DAVID BOWIE will headline Scotland’s biggest music festival next year, it was announced today. The star is the first act to be confirmed for the T in the Park at Balado, near Kinross.
Organisers expect more than 100,000 revellers to gather for the eleventh successive annual festival on July 10 and 11.
Geoff Ellis, chief executive of promoters DF Concerts, hailed the signing as a major coup.
"It is testament to the world status of T in the Park that a music legend such as David Bowie is keen to sign up so early for the 2004 festival," he said.
"Bringing David Bowie to T in the Park fulfils a personal achievement and I know that his performance will become a very special moment in the festival's already rich history.
"He is a timeless artist who never stops innovating and reinventing himself and his influence will undoubtedly be seen on many of the other artists and bands who will accompany him at T in the Park next year."
Tickets for the 2004 festival go on sale on Monday.

THE PETER PAN OF ROCK
29th November 2003
For those of you who didn't see DAVID BOWIE's appearance on the PARKINSON show tonight on BBC1, here's a quick low-down.
David was introduced by Michael Parkinson as 'the Peter Pan of rock', and after Victoria Beckham's interview, David and the band performed an arousing... sorry I meant a rousing version of 'Ziggy Stardust', followed later on (after Clive James' interview) by the excellent 'The Loneliest Guy'. The second song came complete with some rather nice BBC camera-work image mixing.
David's interview covered topics such as Little Richard's big brother 'Big Little Richard' and the fact that Little Richard has the same eye condition as db... Travis wondering how to keep on rocking in years to come... receiving bus passes when you're over 65, to which db wryly replied "just buy own your own bus - it's easier"... talk of toupees complete with a funny story by db about a certain singer's misfortunes on stage in front of a fan (btw that's an electric fan not an audience member) and his flapping head rug... gay Martians... and a whole host of other subjects.
GRAND GLASGOW FINALE
29th November 2003
DAVID BOWIE and his band performed the final show of the European leg of his 'A Reality' tour last night in Glasgow, Scotland at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (Hall 4).
There was a fantastic atmosphere in the venue as always the case with Scottish crowds. For me, this was amongst the best ever three shows I've ever witnessed... and believe me I've seen a few over the years.
Right from the start, David in a high state of joviality, noticed in the crowd a young boy with a painted Aladdin Sane lightning flash painted on his face and asked for him to be picked up. The boy was duly lifted for everyone to see.
Highlights included: David inviting the audience to all sing-a-long to 'All The Young Dudes' which absolutely sounded fantastic. Again, the audience applause after 'Starman' went on and on and on... quite unbelievable. David was obviously touched and taken a-back by the response, he suggested "I won't make the same mistake again. I'll make sure we come back here again."
During the show a banner made by Charly was held aloft, which soon made it's way onto the stage towards David. He grasped it and held it aloft for all the arena to see. It read: 'Dean - This One's For You' and he said "that those who knew what it was about, would know what it was for". That was a nice touch David, thank you.
Another comment (disguised as an announcement) by David went: "Not only is the last show of the tour, it's the last show we'll ever do... (pause)... in Scotland... until T In The Park!"
David totally re-arranged the song order from the official set-lists that were placed on stage and at the mixing desk. It was quite entertaining watching the technicians running around switching different guitars back and forth. He certainly kept them on their toes last night and they did a grand job as always.
The twenty-eight song set list ran as follows:
01. Rebel Rebel
02. New Killer Star
03. Reality
04. Fame
05. Fashion
06. Cactus
07. Afraid

TOP BANDS BOOST BOWIE CONFIDENCE
26th November 2003
Working with top rated bands at pop festivals in the mid-1990s boosted DAVID BOWIE's flagging self-confidence, he says. For although he has been on stage for nearly 40 years, performing live had always been a challenge for him.
"If something went wrong, my self-confidence would disappear," the British singer told the New York Post. "I was so fragile that way because I didn't actually believe I was a stage performer. Then we started doing festivals in the mid-'90s, working with top-rate bands like Prodigy. It was like: 'Phew, I've got to measure myself against this.'
"And you know what? We were going down really well considering all these bands were half my age and some of them a third of my age.
VI think that did such a lot for my confidence as a performer."

DAVID INTERVIEW IN THE SCOTTISH SUNDAY MAIL
23rd November 2003
There is a exclusive two-page interview with DAVID BOWIE in todays SCOTTISH SUNDAY MAIL newspaper where David talks about fatherhood, OOD, living forever and 9/11.
Interviewed by Billy Sloan, the piece entitled 'I missed my son growing up... I'm not going to make the same mistake with my daughter', some of the highlights include:
"I desperately want to live forever. You know what I want to still be around in another 40 or 50 years," said David...
I remarked to David that he's a lucky bleeder... He agreed: "I am, I am. It's like the story where the hotel waiter says to George Best, 'Where did it all go wrong?' In my case, it's, 'Where did it all go right?'"...
Bowie can't wait to hit the SECC next Friday. He told me: "It's gonna be fantastic in Scotland. It's the last gig on our European tour. It's always great for me there."...

REALITY BITES IN THE OBSERVER
23rd November 2003
UK newspaper THE OBSERVER contains a review of DAVID BOWIE's concert from Manchester entitled 'Reality Bites' by Molly Woodcraft.
...'Wake up, Manchester, your grandad's here,' he shouts four numbers in and for some of those crowded round his little pontoon in front of the stalls, this may not be such an exaggeration of the gulf between their ages. But age has not bowed Bowie. He looks about 30 - trim and toned, with taut skin and all his own hair.
...He's got himself an extraordinary band, too, the best he's taken on the road in years. Who would have believed Earl Slick and Gerry Leonard on guitars? Top that off with Mike Garson and Cat Russell on keys backed by the powerhouse of Gail Ann Dorsey on bass and Sterling Cambell on drums and you know you're on to a winner.

DAVID WANTED FOR THE SIMPSONS
23rd November 2003
Featured in todays INDEPENDENT newspaper in the UK is an article by Ian Burrell the Media and Culture Correspondent... who interviews MATT WARBURTON the co-producer of the utterly fabulous THE SIMPSONS television show.
Mr. Warburton said the Simpsons production team had drawn up a list of 10 British stars they had hoped would take cameo roles. "There was a part for a famous British musician. I would have liked DAVID BOWIE or Morrissey, who lives in LA. We couldn't use Thom Yorke because he'd already been in South Park and we couldn't use Elton John because he has already been on the show and so has Sir Paul McCartney."
The writer said the Simpsons team still hoped to persuade Bowie to appear in a later episode.

BOWIE CHOOSES WELLINGTON
19th November 2003
Wellington has beaten Auckland in the battle to woo British rock star DAVID BOWIE.
Bowie will perform his only New Zealand show at Wellington's Westpac Stadium on February 14th. The show, part of Bowie's seven-month 18-country A Reality Tour, is a coup for the capital and the stadium. Wellington has missed out on several big acts during the past two years, and the stadium has staged only one rock concert - Robbie Williams in November 2001.
Bowie's Melbourne-based promoter Paul Dainty said he chose Wellington because he was impressed by the stadium, its management's proposal and support from Wellington City Council.
Up to 35,000 tickets will go on sale on November 27th.

Update from BowieNet: Pre-sale tickets for BowieNet members go on sale TODAY at 9:00 am Thursday New Zealand time.

TONY THOMPSON REST IN PEACE
13th November 2003
Very sad news to report the death of TONY THOMPSON, one of the premier session drummers of the past twenty-five years, died on Wednesday in Los Angeles of renal cell cancer aged forty-eight years old.
The former member of Seventies disco funk band Chic, Thompson had worked with everyone from DAVID BOWIE to Madonna to Diana Ross.
Born in New York on November 15th, 1954, Thompson came to prominence on the late-Seventies disco scene, thanks to his funky, rock influenced big-beat style. After sitting in with LaBelle, Thompson met Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, with whom he formed Chic in 1976.
Chic disbanded in 1983, and Thompson became an in-demand session musician, working with David on his Serious Moonlight World Tour throughout 1983 and the Let's Dance album.

TOULOUSE SHOW CANCELLED
11th November 2003
Tomorrow nights show in Toulouse, France has been cancelled due to DAVID BOWIE having laryngitis.
News of the cancellation was posted up on the BowieNet News page, which reads as follows:
I said I'd let you know immediately I had any updates after last night's news that David was suffering from some kind of throat condition. Well, I can now tell you that unfortunately David has come down with a case of laryngitis, and for this reason he has most regretfully had to cancel tomorrow's show in Toulouse.
You know he doesn't make these decisions lightly and anybody present at last night's show will understand just how he really does his best not to let anyone down.
David does expect to be fine in time for Friday's show in Marseille, but obviously we'll let you know if there are any further developments.

DAVID BACKSTAGE DURING THE NYC MARATHON
4th November 2003
You can now check out an exclusive selection of some of the wonderful DAVID BOWIE photographs that appear in MYRIAM SANTOS-KAYDA's fantastic new book David Bowie: Live In New York - you can view 8 out of a total of 180 photographs by simply clicking here - you know how it works.
In October, 2002, David Bowie performed the New York City Marathon Tour. Five different nights in five different venues in each of New York's five boroughs. It was a tribute to New York, and a tribute to his fans. For the first time in over fifteen years, he let a photographer follow him on tour, capturing a David Bowie we've never seen before.
Myriam Santos-Kayda, acclaimed portrait photographer for the music industry, has captured David Bowie in rehearsal, in the dressing room, onstage and backstage, alone and hanging out with his band. Bowie, one of rock's most influential and enduring figures, reveals his complexity, humour, grace, and rigor as an artist and performer.
About the Marathon tour, Bowie writes, 'The last time I came through the Northeast it was on the Area 2 Tour. We played in amphitheaters, which are usually a good distance from the major cities. Marathon courses are strategically planned to bring the runners to the streets. I would like to repay the fans that travelled so far to see me by bringing my show to them. But most importantly, I could get home from all the gigs on roller skates.'
David Bowie: Live in New York is an intimate portrait of one of rock and roll's most exciting events of the decade.
