'CONVERSATION PIECE' (2019 MIX) AVAILABLE NOW AS A STREAMING ONLY SINGLE.

David Bowie Conversation Piece 5CD Box Set [4th September 2019 - London] Parlophone Records is proud to announce DAVID BOWIE CONVERSATION PIECE a five CD box set and digital equivalent tracking David's early development throughout 1968 and 1969, via his home demos, BBC radio sessions, studio recordings with guitarist John 'Hutch' Hutchinson and the experimental music and mime group, Feathers. The collection also celebrates the 50th anniversaries of the release of the 'Space Oddity' single and David's second album, David Bowie (aka Space Oddity).

DAVID BOWIE CONVERSATION PIECE contains twelve previously unreleased tracks/demos from the period as well as a brand new mix of the Space Oddity (aka David Bowie) album by long-time Bowie producer/collaborator Tony Visconti.

The new mix of the album now features the title track of the boxset 'Conversation Piece' restored to the tracklisting in its initially intended position, before it was originally dropped due to time constraints of vinyl.

Of the 2019 Space Oddity album mix Visconti says "It was so much fun to find hidden gems of musicianship with more time to mix the second time around, a guitar twiddle here, a trombone blast there, Marc Bolan's voice in a group choir and more detail in general that we overlooked all those years ago when the label gave us a week at the most to mix this album. And in the details you will find 22 year old David Bowie, who would soon take the world by storm."

The 120 page hardback book accompanying the box features exclusive memorabilia from the personal collection of David's former manager, the late Ken Pitt, as well as from the David Bowie Archive®, and includes photos by Ray Stevenson, Vernon Dewhurst, David Bebbington, Ken Pitt, Alec Byrne, Tony Visconti and Jojanneke Claasen.

The sleeve notes have been written for the release by Bowie experts Mark Adams, Tris Penna and Kevin Cann along with contributions from David's lifelong friend George Underwood, Tony Visconti, Vernon Dewhurst, Dana Gillespie and John 'Hutch' Hutchinson.

The 2019 mix of the SPACE ODDITY album will also be released separately and individually on CD, standard digital, 96/24 digital and vinyl. The various vinyl configurations will be randomly distributed worldwide with a mixture of hand-numbered labels; numbers 1 to 1969 on silver vinyl numbers and 1970 to 2019 on gold vinyl, with the remainder being black vinyl.

TWO BOWIE BOOKS OUT TODAY
14th November 2019

Two DAVID BOWIE books are published today...

Bowie's Books: The Hundred Literary Heroes Who Changed His Life First up is the 288-page hardcover BOWIE'S BOOKS: The Hundred Literary Heroes Who Changed His Life by JOHN O'CONNELL.

Three years before he died, David Bowie supplied a list of the one hundred books that had transformed his life - a list that formed something akin to an autobiography. From Madame Bovary to A Clockwork Orange, the Iliad to the Beano, these were the publications that had fuelled his creativity and shaped who he was.

In Bowie's Books, John O'Connell explores this list in the form of one hundred short essays, each offering a perspective on the man, performer and creator that is Bowie, his work as an artist and the era that he lived in.

Bowie's Books is much more than a list of books you should read in your lifetime: it is a unique insight into one of the greatest minds of our times, and an indispensable part of the legacy that Bowie left behind.

Review: You can only truly know a pop star through his bookshelf. John O'Connell's brilliant, gossipy book gives you a whole new secret David Bowie: the reader. This is the unwritten Bowie book that needed writing - (Caitlin Moran).

Book Description: 100 books explored in 100 short essays, each paired with a Bowie song and a beautiful illustration.

A FINANCIAL TIMES PICK FOR 2019.

You can purchase this #1 best seller NOW!

Why Bowie Matters by Will Brooker Secondly, the 240-page hardcover WHY BOWIE MATTERS by WILL BROOKER.

Synopsis: A unique, moving and dazzlingly researched exploration of the places, people, musicians, writers and filmmakers that inspired David Jones to become David Bowie, what we can learn from his life's work and journey, and why he will always matter.

When David Bowie died on 10th January 2016, it seemed the whole world was united in mourning. His greatest hits were sung tearfully in pubs up and down Britain, garlands of flowers were left at the Aladdin Sane mural in his old stomping ground of Brixton and tributes poured in from a galaxy of stars. To many of us, Bowie was so much more than a pop idol. But why?

In Why Bowie Matters, Professor Will Brooker answers that question persuasively, as both a fan and an academic. A Bowie obsessive since childhood, he hit the headlines over the course of a year-long immersive research project that took him from London to Berlin and New York, following in Bowie's footsteps, only listening to music and reading books he loved, and even at times adopting his fashion.

In this original and illuminating book, Professor Brooker approaches Bowie from various angles, re-tracing his childhood on the streets of Bromley, taking us through his record collection and bookshelves, and deciphering the symbols and codes of his final work, Blackstar to piece together how an ordinary suburban teenager turned himself into a legend, and how perhaps we too could be a little more Bowie.

He shows us that while David Robert Jones died on that terrible day in January, David Bowie will live on forever.

About the Author: Will Brooker is a writer and academic, professor of film and cultural studies at Kingston University and an author of several books of cultural studies dealing with elements of modern pop culture and fandom.

DAVID BOWIE : RAINBOWMAN (1967-1980)
11th November 2019

David Bowie : Rainbowman (1967-1980) Just published over in France is DAVID BOWIE: RAINBOWMAN (1967-1980) by JÉRÔME SOLIGNY via Gallimard Editions.

Synopsis: For nearly a quarter of a century, as a music journalist, Jérôme Soligny has written about David Bowie and has regularly exchanged with him. In the spring of 2016, a few weeks after his death, he began a task as original as it was consistent: to tell the story of Bowie, the musician, his recordings and his tours, with the help of those who participated in the construction of his work. Counting the rock stars who had already spoken at his microphone about this extraordinary artist - of which he gathered the statements here - it is almost three hundred people (producers, instrumentalists, sound engineers, but also designers, photographers, as well as musicians who influenced or influenced him...) who speak in Rainbowman. They help to paint a portrait, not consistent with the idea that, for decades, the media and the public are David Bowie, but faithful man of words and music, the music lover passed to the act that, humbly, he claimed to be until the end of his life.

Jérôme told me: "After 3 years and a half of really hard but exciting work, my first thoughts go to Tony Visconti (foreword and so much more), Mick Rock (cover photo), Jonathan Barnbrook (design), Lisa and Margaux Chetteau (illustrations), Sophie, my publisher Gallimard and, last but not least, the close to 300 'music and art people' who talked to me, trusted me and made these books possible. David Bowie : Rainbowman (1967-1980), first volume, out in November. Second volume out next year. Both are dedicated to my father who won't be able to read them but opened my ears to jazz when I was five years old."

BOWIE AT THE BLACK BALL
9th November 2019

On this day, 13 years ago, DAVID BOWIE performed at the 3rd Annual Black Ball Benefit for Keep A Child Alive at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City, USA in 2006.

This was to be his last live performance on stage with a band.

David performed three songs: 'Wild Is The Wind' (with Mike Garson on piano), 'Fantastic Voyage' (backed by Alicia Keys' band) and 'Changes' (duet with Alicia Keys).

Hosts Alicia Keys and Iman were joined by KCA founder Leigh Blake, emcee Wanda Sykes and honourees Richard Beckman, Dr. Paul Farmer and Partners in Health, and "Mama" Carol Dyanti.

Other musical performers were Alicia Keys, Damian Marley and Louis XIV.

As far as I'm aware, his performance wasn't professionally filmed and the only filmed footage was shot by DB fan Simone. Check out her footage below...

The Black Ball is an Annual fundraiser for KCA (Keep A Child Alive), the non-profit organisation which brings dignified treatment, care and support to children and families affected by HIV.

Lot 1: David Bowie 2nd album (aka MOW/MOM) LP (US promo) - £220
Lot 2: David Bowie debut album LP (original US mono pressing) - £550
Lot 3: David Bowie debut album LP (original UK mono pressing) - £1,450
Lot 4: Hunky Dory LP (original UK front laminated) - £240
Lot 5: David Bowie 2nd album (1st UK unassigned credits) - £500
Lot 6: TMWSTW LP (1st UK dress sleeve) - £1,400
Lot 14: TMWSTW LP (1st UK dress sleeve) - £800

Lot 19: Pin Ups (UK Trident Studios acetate recording LP) - £1,700
Fantastic piece of Bowie history with the original Trident Studios acetate recording of the classic 1973 LP. Issued on 2 x single sided acetate LPs with Trident Studios printed labels and 'David Bowie 1' and 'David Bowie 2' hand written on the corresponding record. Both records are presented in outstanding ex+ condition. Visually there are just a couple of very fine, minor and wispy markings to the playing sides with the playback superb on both records. There is very little deterioration to the aluminium lacquer. Audio-wise we believe the recording to be very similar to that of the final studio version, however there is a difference on the opening track Rosalyn with a distinct 'echo' heard on the intro. There are slight tempo/pitch changes that can be heard, the most notable of this on I Can't Explain. Housed with original Trident Studios orange sleeve which is in excellent condition showing a few light creases.

Lot 29: Space Oddity 7" original 'unissued' picture sleeve - £3,400
One of just 2 or 3 known to exist, here is the holy grail for any dedicated Bowie collector; the original unissued picture sleeve copy of Space Oddity (Philips BF 1801). The picture sleeve is completely authentic. The sleeve is in fantastic ex+ condition. The striking image of Bowie with his 12 string guitar is lovely and clear, the reverse showing some very minor discolouration (a sign that this is indeed from the period and not a recent pressing) with some rather minor ringwear noted. The slightly 'rough' or 'textured' feel to the sleeve once more shows us that this is the genuine article. The record (original juke-box centre) is in clean excellent condition and housed with an original Philips company sleeve. Record Collector magazine stated of the history of this release: Nobody has been able to explain why the sleeve was printed and then not distributed, although, during his research for his David Bowie: World 7" Records Discography, expert Marshall Jarman was informed by a man who worked in Holland for Philips in the 60s that when Space Oddity was first released, stereo singles were still a novelty, and Philips had several stereo singles pressed up in Holland specially for the UK market as an experiment. Space Oddity would have been a likely subject for a marketing exercise of this kind, as the single made good use of effects, and was also inspired by developments in technology. Jarman speculated that as the UK stereo discs were pressed in Holland, there may well have been picture sleeves printed to go with them - after all, every other European country issued a picture sleeve, most utilising the same image seen here in various forms - and that for some reason the company decided not to use them after all. (Ed. Philips Records executive Olav Wyper has confirmed recently that this UK sleeve was indeed genuine).

Lot 189: Five rare David Bowie t-shirts - £550
Lot 193: David Bowie Hunky Dory signed inner - £440

Lot 197: David Bowie 1973 signed programme - £550
A mounted and framed display to include a page from a 1973 Diana Ross Show programme signed clearly in blue ink by David Bowie, also in blue ink by Billy Preston and in black ink by 'Jipp Jones' (aka Angie Bowie). Provenance documents supplied and included with the lot include a private photograph of David Bowie at a signing session following the event. Frame measures 57 x 44.5cm.

Lot 213: David Bowie - Joe Petagno Poster - £150
Lot 219: David Bowie 1999 signed 'hours...' CD - £340

Lot 221: Davie Jones and The Manish Boys autographs - £1,100
Two pages from an autograph book bearing signatures variously from: David Bowie signed as Davie Jones (with inscription to vendor also in Bowie's hand), Paul Rodriguez and John Watson of the band. Also includes early picture of Bowie taped to page. Signatures obtained in person by the vendor on Denmark Street, London, on 26th October 1964. Other signatures on pages to include: Karl Kings, John Konrad of The Mojos, Tony Jackson of The Searchers.

Lot 223: David Bowie and Bing Crosby Show contact sheets - £460
Lot 224: David Bowie Just A Gigolo contact sheets - £900
Lot 225: David Bowie (Ziggy Stardust) concert transparencies with copyright - £1,300
Lot 226: David Bowie (Ziggy Stardust) concert negatives with copyright - £2,600

Lot 227: David Bowie 1966 demo tape - £3,400
A boxed reel of Scotch 7" tape, with contents to include three studio recordings made by David Bowie and band circa December 1966 for inclusion on his self-titled debut album. The takes recorded and heard on this tape will not have been previously publicly available. There is approximately 27 minutes worth of very clear, high quality audio to comprise: 13.5 minutes of audio during takes for 'Silly Boy Blue' to include five false starts and two full takes, with plenty of light hearted studio chatter from Bowie and band (just after the trumpet opening Bowie comes in 'Sorry! I forgot what I was doing.'). There is approximately 7.5 minutes of audio during takes for 'Sell Me A Coat' to include two false starts and a complete take, with more studio chat and instructions to David re his timing. Also approximately 6 minutes of audio for 'Please, Mr Gravedigger' to comprise two false starts (one interrupted somewhat tersely by Bowie who complains of an unthinking studio guest 'your feet are too loud') and one full take. This item is sold as an artefact only, without copyright. Any reproduction is strictly prohibited.

Lot 231: David Bowie 1969 Gravesend handbill - £900

Lot 232: David Bowie 'Rock 'N Roll With Me' (Olympic Studios 16 track session tape) - £2,100
A boxed 2-inch by 10.5 inch sixteen track reel of magnetic tape containing several individual elements (i.e. recordings of instrumentation on separate channels) to comprise partial and complete rehearsal takes of the song "When You Rock 'N Roll With Me", recorded on 9th January 1974 during sessions for the Diamond Dogs album. The recording is excellent quality and these incredible sounding stripped down versions are unheard and have never been released. The tape features Bowie pausing frequently to direct the musicians - in total there are six different takes with 3 being complete. The label lists a final version as 'MASTER' but this is no longer present on the reel, presumably having been spliced off to be compiled with other album master tracks, possibly for further overdubbing etc. Provenance: The vendor acquired the tape following his involvement in the sale of Olympic Studios to Virgin in 1986/87 - when the studios were being reconstructed notices were sent to record labels and related parties giving them a certain time period to collect their tapes before being disposed of. This tape along with many others were not collected with many being destroyed. **The tape is sold as an artefact only and does not include any copyright.**

BOWIE'S BOOKS OUT THIS MONTH
3rd November 2019

Bowie's Books: The Hundred Literary Heroes Who Changed His Life Published later this month is BOWIE'S BOOKS: The Hundred Literary Heroes Who Changed His Life by JOHN O'CONNELL.

This 288-page hardcover hits the shelves on Thursday 14th November.

About the Author: John O'Connell was born in 1972. A former Senior Editor at Time Out and music columnist for The Face, he is now freelance, writing mainly for The Times and The Guardian. He interviewed David Bowie in New York in 2002. He lives in south London with his wife and two daughters.

WHY BOWIE MATTERS
3rd November 2019

Why Bowie Matters by Will Brooker Published later this month is WHY BOWIE MATTERS by WILL BROOKER. This 240-page hardcover hits the shelves on 14th November.
