Published this week is SILHOUETTES AND SHADOWS: The Secret History of David Bowie's Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) by ADAM STEINER.
Synopsis:
An avant-garde pop album rich with tension and fear, 1980's Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) marked a pivotal point in David Bowie's career. Standing at the bleeding edge of the new decade between the experimental Berlin Trilogy (Low, "Heroes", and Lodger) and 1983's wildly successful Let's Dance, it was here Bowie sought to bury the ghosts of his past and the golden decade of the 1970s to become a global superstar reaching millions of new fans.
Featuring fresh insights and exclusive interviews with close collaborators, Adam Steiner's Silhouettes and Shadows uncovers the studio stories, meanings behind, and secret history of Scary Monsters. Steiner gives a nuanced, memorable portrait of Bowie at a personal and professional crossroads, drawing on his own struggle with addiction, growing paranoia, and political turmoil. Despite the album's confrontational themes, it included the hit singles Fashion and Ashes To Ashes, with Bowie riding a new wave of inspiration, from the post-punk of Joy Division, The Specials' two-tone revolution, and the stadium synth-pop of Gary Numan. Most importantly, it marked a final goodbye to Major Tom, Ziggy Stardust, and The Thin White Duke, characters and personas that had defined his career: in this rare moment, David Bowie, the costumed clown of romance, suffering, and song, let his mask slip to reveal David Jones, the man within.
Reviews:
"Written with a poet's love for the jumble of words, the critic's fierce interrogating eye, and the fan's love of music, Silhouettes and Shadows is an essential read for anyone who takes Bowie seriously. Steiner brings out this unique stage in Bowie's life and art in full colour and with a rich and intriguing weave of testimony old and new and fresh insights on Bowie and his incredible music." - David Buckley, author of David Bowie: Strange Fascination.
"Adam Steiner's analysis of one of Bowie's most charismatic yet strangely elusive albums is as compelling as it is rich in detail. It sent me straight back to the record, as the best writing on music always does. This is a fresh and vital addition to the lengthening bibliography on David Bowie's extraordinary career." - Michael Bracewell, author of Souvenir.
"Adam Steiner's Silhouettes and Shadows is the mind-bendingly fascinating story of an album and its maker at the peak of his career." - Arsalan Mohammad, host of the David Bowie: Albumtoalbum podcast.
"An insightful, expansive, and informed searchlight into the inner workings of one of the most essential recordings of Bowie's oeuvre. Beautifully conceived and written with penetrating insight." - Chuck Hammer, guitarist.
"Both foreshadowed destination and a point of departure, Scary Monsters is a significant staging post in Bowie's career. Adam Steiner's erudite book communicates the thrill of an artist meeting the times, and his past, head on." - Graeme Thomson, author of Themes for Great Cities: A New History of Simple Minds.
"Scary Monsters is one of David Bowie's most fascinating records - a decade-closing album full of anger, confusion, innovation, retrenchment, theft, and sheer brilliance that's unique in his catalog. Adam Steiner digs into every aspect of it, from its songs to its art to its videos. He skillfully traces its many tributaries and listens to how it echoes throughout Bowie's later works. Anyone who's been entranced by Scary Monsters over the years will find much of interest here." - Chris O'Leary, author of Ashes To Ashes and Rebel Rebel
"Steiner gathers together much significant research - covering areas of Bowie's recording career that have been previously overlooked." - George Underwood, artist
"Steiner's rich text brilliantly recreates the claustrophobic paranoia and relentless self-analysis of an album that seems more unsettling every time you hear it." - Peter Doggett, author of The Man Who Sold The World.
"The 1980 album Scary Monsters is, arguably, David Bowie's masterpiece. It sums up everything Bowie had accomplished in the 1970s, but its sounds and its obsessions also foreshadow much of what Bowie would do in the decades to come. There are good reasons that every great Bowie release till his death in 2016 was called by some reviewers 'his best album since Scary Monsters.' In Silhouettes and Shadows, Adam Steiner provides a kaleidoscopic view of Bowie's masterpiece. Reading Silhouettes and Shadows is like living with the album in real-time. In some chapters we are next to Bowie as he is creating the album; sometimes we are next to the photographers and artists putting together its dazzling cover; sometimes we are with the videographer shooting the groundbreaking video for Ashes To Ashes; sometimes we are with Steiner himself as a responsive, insightful listener to the music and lyrics of each song, and to Bowie as an artist. It's a pleasure to relive Scary Monsters in Steiner's hands!" - Glenn Hendler, author David Bowie's Diamond Dogs (331/3).
About the Author:
Adam Steiner writes about music, street-art culture, architecture, poetry, and transgressive fiction. His previous books include Into the Never: Nine Inch Nails and the Creation of the Downward Spiral and the novel Politics of the Asylum.
Silhouettes and Shadows is published on 15th July - you can pre-order NOW and get a 5% discount.
Last week there was another surprise in the Official GREECE Album Sales Chart, DAVID BOWIE had FOUR of his albums in the Top 65.

Someone asked what date is BAAL showing on BBC FOUR and iPlayer?
So by my reckoning DAVID BOWIE in Baal should be broadcast on BBC Four on Wednesday 26th July at 23.05 BST (TBC).
The showcase of eleven acclaimed BBC feature-length dramas - which began on 10th May - all ten have now been listed, leaving the best till last.
Can someone let the Ichthyosaurus know?
Directed by Alan Clarke, David Bowie stars in Baal, a television adaptation of Bertolt Brecht's classic play about a rebellious poetic genius, about to meet his end after a drunken and dissolute decline. Baal has never been repeated on BBC TV since its BBC One premiere on 2nd March 1982.
Hopefully the listing will be on the BBC FOUR schedule soon.
Update: Hats off to BBC Four who are making a night of it. First up is David Bowie: Cracked Actor at 22.00, followed by Zoë Wanamaker Remembers - Bowie and Baal at 22.55 and ending with Baal with David Bowie at 23.05 BST.
On this day, 54 years ago, DAVID BOWIE released his 'Space Oddity' single in 1969.
First issued on the Philips label, 'Space Oddity' was David Bowie's first UK top 5 hit.
In 1975, it was re-released by RCA as part of a Maximillion Series (3 tracks for the price of 2), containing 'Space Oddity', 'Changes' and 'Velvet Goldmine', which became David's first UK number 1 single.
On 10th May 1970, the song received the 'Special Award for Originality' at the 15th Ivor Novello Awards (presented by the Songwriters Guild of Great Britain).
Happy 7th Birthday wishes to STENTON DAVID JONES.
Check out the remastered HD performance of DAVID BOWIE performing 'Rebel Rebel' on Dutch TV programme TopPop.
Recorded in the TopPop studios in Hilversum, The Netherlands, under the direction of Rien van Wijk.

- A 5.1 mix undertaken by producer Tony Visconti.

Another from NACHO - check out the newly enhanced and extended version of DAVID BOWIE's performance of 'My Death' from the Ziggy/Aladdin Last Stand at the legendary Hammersmith Odeon on 3rd July 1973.
On this day, 50 years ago, DAVID BOWIE laid to rest his persona 'Ziggy Stardust' / 'Aladdin Sane' and retired from live concert performing.
At the time, the majority of fans didn't realise it was Ziggy and not David himself announcing on stage the now legendary statement from the Hammersmith Odeon:
"Everybody... this has been... one of the greatest tours of our life we really... at first I'd like to thank the band... I'd like to thank our road crew and I'd like to thank our lighting people. Er, of all of the shows on this tour, this, this particular show will remain with us the longest because... not only is it... not only is it the last show of the tour, but it's the last show that we'll ever do. Thank you."
This momentous performance gets the special treatment for the 50th Anniversary of this event, with digitally restored and remastering releases on Blu-ray / Audio 2-CD and 2-LP Limited Edition Gold Vinyl Set all available next month on 11th August...

The eagerly awaited English language version of DAVID BOWIE RAINBOWMAN 1967-1980 by JÉRÔME SOLIGNY is to be published on 5th September in the US and on 8th September in the UK.
Published by Monoray, this hardcover edition contains a whopping 704-pages and is distributed by Hachette Book Group.
David Bowie Rainbowman 1967-1980 by Jérôme Soligny is a meticulously detailed history of the moments that shaped Bowie's musical career told by the people who were actually "in the room" with him.
The book publishes September 5th in the US and September 8th in the UK - the 50th anniversary of the release of Aladdin Sane. First published in France in 2019 as the first of two volumes, Rainbowman is appearing now in English for the very first time.
This uniquely exhaustive work on Bowie's 1967-1980 albums draws on over 150 extensive interviews with some of the most significant people in David Bowie's life - the musicians, producers and friends who knew Bowie best, including Ken Scott, Hermione Farthingale, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, George Underwood, Mick Ronson, Carlos Alomar, Trevor Bolder, Mike Garson, Woody Woodmansey and many, many others.
Hermione Farthingale calls it "a book unlike any other, the definitive analysis of David's music, told in a quiet natural way, but with absolute authenticity, by the people around him."
Tony Visconti says: "Jérôme Soligny is one of the best authorities in the world of David Bowie's career and life in general... His new biography Rainbowman is a thorough and honest account of the great man."
According to Tony Visconti, Jérôme Soligny was David Bowie's favourite French journalist and over 25 years, he spent time getting to know the artist and his fellow musicians.
""Jérôme is a guy who is still aware that popular music is an art form and not a money suppository. He writes from the heart and is one of the last exemplars of a dying breed. The critic, armed with intelligence and brute compulsive honesty, as dangerous as a river." - Iggy Pop."Not long ago, "Jérôme told me something that I find very true: 'David played saxophone, guitar, a bit of keyboards, but above all, he played musicians!' I think he really hit the nail on the head." - Mike Garson.
With an essay by Soligny on each album, followed by oral histories from the most trusted and influential figures in Bowie's musical life, David Bowie Rainbowman: 1967-1980 is the definitive guide to the musical development of a singular and mercurial genius - the Rainbowman himself.
The essential book is completed by a foreword by Tony Visconti and an introduction by Mike Garson, with a cover photo by Mick Rock, and an iconic cover design by Barnbrook.
About the Author: Jérôme Soligny is a musician, writer and journalist based in Le Havre, France. Over the course of 25 years, Jérôme spoke with Bowie many times, and interviewed him on numerous occasions for Rock&Folk magazine. Jérôme is one of the five worldwide Bowie experts chosen to write in Chris Duffy's book, Aladdin Sane 50 Years, about the iconic photo session for the cover of Aladdin Sane, shot by Chris' father, Brian Duffy. Jérôme was made Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in 2019 Visconti and is described by Bryan Ferry as "one of the great French authorities on contemporary music."
Jérôme Soligny said: "It's an honour and privilege for me to realise that Rainbowman is going to be published in English, the language of rock music and also David Bowie's. The whole project took five years of my life, but as my closest friend say 'There was 40 years of passion before this'. I hope the true lovers of David's music will be as happy to read the book as I've been to write it. Sure, Rainbowman is a heavy brick of paper full of information but also a tribute to musicians and music people - famous and those who stayed in the shadow - who helped David craft his songs and albums. Funnily enough, it's a musician who brought me to Monoray and no, it can't be chance. Some things are written in the stars."

"Of all the shows on this tour, this particular show will remain with us the longest, because not only is it the last show of the tour, but it's the last show that we'll ever do." - David Bowie, 1973.
"A truly great star knows not only how to make a grand entrance, but a grand exit." - Charles Shaar Murray, 2023.
3rd July, 1973 - David Bowie retired Ziggy Stardust, his most famous alter-ego, in front of 5,000 stunned fans at London's Hammersmith Odeon. Now, the fully restored film and soundtrack will be released for the first time for the 50th anniversary of the show. Renowned filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker (Monterey Pop, Bob Dylan - Don't Look Back, Depeche Mode - 101) captured the momentous event by filming Bowie and The Spiders From Mars backstage and onstage. The digital restoration of the new version of the film has been overseen by his son, Frazer Pennebaker with remastered audio.
Although filmed 50 years ago, the film was not widely seen for over a decade. However, the film and its soundtrack have been newly remastered with the medley of 'The Jean Genie'/'Love Me Do' medley and 'Round And Round' featuring the late legendary Jeff Beck reinstated - the latter track making its very first appearance anywhere. Both performances were newly mixed by long-time Bowie collaborator Tony Visconti.
The show featured Bowie's famous speech just before the final encore, 'Rock 'N' Roll Suicide', where he revealed that he was retiring the Ziggy Stardust persona. The shocking announcement came as a surprise to all in attendance - including members of his band and was the first proclamation of its kind in rock and roll.
