DAVID BOWIE takes over GOMA with The Cracked Actor: Bowie on Screen, a new film programme at the Gallery of Modern Art's Australian Cinémathèque in South Brisbane, celebrating David Bowie's eclectic on-screen career, from 17th August to 5th October.

This curated film programme charts the changes in Bowie's acting style, from early on-stage musical performances to unforgettable on-screen roles, including an enigmatic vampire in Tony Scott's The Hunger (1983), the mysterious inventor Nikola Tesla in Christopher Nolan's The Prestige (2006) and the infamous alter-ego that started it all, Ziggy Stardust, in Brett Morgen's psychedelically-infused experimental biopic Moonage Daydream (2022).

On this day, 53 years ago, DAVID BOWIE recorded 'Life On Mars?' at Trident Studios in Soho, London.

David Bowie: "This song was so easy. Being young was easy. A really beautiful day in the park, sitting on the steps of the bandstand. 'Sailors bap-bap-bap-bap-baaa-bap.' An anomic (not a 'gnomic') heroine. Middle-class ecstasy.

"I took a walk to Beckenham High Street to catch a bus to Lewisham to buy shoes and shirts but couldn't get the riff out of my head. Jumped off two stops into the ride and more or less loped back to the house up on Southend Road.

"Workspace was a big empty room with a chaise longue; a bargain-price art nouveau screen ('William Morris,' so I told anyone who asked); a huge overflowing freestanding ashtray and a grand piano. Little else.

"I started working it out on the piano and had the whole lyric and melody finished by late afternoon. Nice.

"Rick Wakeman came over a couple of weeks later and embellished the piano part and guitarist Mick Ronson created one of his first and best string parts for this song which now has become something of a fixture in my live shows."

The original working lyrics written by David for Life On Mars? ended up with more than a few changes...

This is The Bowie. It's my house and as you can probably guess I'm a bit of a fan! It has all my David Bowie memorabilia. Framed prints and magazines, a jukebox with 80 Bowie singles, plus lots more. It's also a Smart House. Press Bowie "Sound" and a Bowie album will play in the room. Press "Bowie Vision" and the TV will turn on and you can watch Bowie films and documentaries. The house is minimalist, modern and luxurious with gorgeous furniture and lighting to make your stay a wonderful, fun experience.

The house was designed by local architects Witcher Crawford and I completed the build this year (2024). The interior is modern, minimalist and monochrome but along the way it also developed into a Smart House and then into The Bowie! The bright red Ligne Roset Togo sofa is a design classic as is the Flos Spun floor lamp and Kartell chairs and stools. You will also find the iconic Broinvega ts 502 radio.cubo and Olivetti Valentine portable typewriter. These are the same models as owned by David Bowie and sold at Sotheby's in 2016.

The house has a lovely open spacious vibe, while the back garden is secluded and south facing, fantastic to sit out in warm summer nights. Even if you are not a massive David Bowie I think you'll still love the house!
