DEADLINE BOWIE EXCLUSIVE
30th October 2025

The DEADLINE website has an exclusive piece written by MAX GOLDBART revealing that a new 90-minute DAVID BOWIE documentary is currently in the pipeline.

The article titled: 'David Bowie's Final Decade To Be Celebrated In Documentary Feature From Channel 4, Rogan and Dogwoof' - [READ HERE].

EXCLUSIVE: It's been nearly 10 years since the late David Bowie released his final album and Channel 4, Dogwoof and Rogan Productions are commemorating the moment.

DAVID BOWIE: THE FINAL ACT [working title] will chart the final creative chapter of one of music's most iconic artists.

Featuring rare interviews with those who knew and worked alongside Bowie as well as famous fans and figures who have been inspired by his artistry, the film will uncover the strategy behind Bowie's artistic resurrection and the inexhaustible extraordinary creativity that defined his final decade, in which he released his critically acclaimed album Blackstar just two days before he died.

This was an emergence from the turbulence of the 1990s, when Bowie had found himself at odds with a changing industry, but pushed on to headline Glastonbury in 2000.

The 90-minute feature is a co-production with public broadcasters WDR, BR, ARTE, DR and NTR. Dogwoof is selling internationally and Rogan Productions, which also made Freddie Mercury: The Final Act and ABBA: Against the Odds, is producing. The doc is directed by Jonathan Stiasny (Drive to Survive, Cops Like Us) and produced by Emmy and Rose d'Or winner Dan Hall (ABBA: Against the Odds, Freddie Mercury: The Final Act).

Stiasny said: "The traditional music documentary celebrates triumph. What fascinated me most when making this film was how Bowie's final chapter wasn't an ending, it was a resurrection. He transformed failure into triumph, silence into revelation, and ultimately, death into art."

Shaminder Nahal, Head of Specialist Factual at Channel 4, added: "Bowie was one of those rare artists whose imagination never dimmed. This film reveals how, when faced with the end, he found ways to push boundaries and create something transcendent."

Executive producers on the doc are James Rogan and Jan Younghusband for Rogan.

On this day, 53 years ago, DAVID BOWIE and The Spiders From Mars played the first of two gigs at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, Los Angeles, CA, USA in 1972.

This first show was broadcast live on a local FM radio station and also recorded by RCA Records for a planned Ziggy Stardust live double album. The shows at Boston and Santa Monica were also recorded and the artwork created by George Underwood.

The live FM radio broadcast introduced by Steve Martin went as follows: "Steve Martin here, backstage at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. It's a cool night in Los Angeles, and as you may know or not know, the Santa Monica Civic is about a hundred yards from the beach so we have a cool breeze blowing off the ocean through the stage at our backs. The auditorium is packed, as a matter of fact, for the first David Bowie concert in the Los Angeles area. There will be one more tomorrow night, this is the concert tonight which will be recorded by RCA for the next David Bowie album and we expect to hear some new material by this British superstar. David and his group, the Spiders From Mars will enter from the other side of the stage. The auditorium is completely blacked out except for flashing strobe lights. Now the entrance music will be the Ode, or should I say the Ode To Joy which is featured in the movie A Clockwork Orange and the house lights are starting to dim... here's David Bowie." - [More details]...

On this day, 57 years ago, TURQUOISE performed at The Country Club, Haverstock Hill, Hampstead, London NW3. Also appearing at this 1968 Time Out/Free Bank Benefit gig were: Third Ear Band, Doris Henderson, George Smith and Mike Vernon, Pegasus Blues, Mimi and Mouse, Simon Stable and Pete Drummond on Plastic Dream Machine, plus others.

David had placed an advertisement in the International Times way back in June. It stated 'David Bowie needs acoustic guitarist singing/speaking for exciting project, must be alive'. The name 'Turquoise' lasted for only a small number of appearances before Tony Hill's final performance. Tony left to join 'High Tide', a group that David was later to support. His replacement was ex-Buzz member John 'Hutch' Hutchinson. Shortly after the name was changed to FEATHERS...

ON THIS DAY...
19th October 2025

On this day, 52 years ago, DAVID BOWIE released his Pin Ups album in 1973, featuring cover versions of some of his favourite songs from the '64-'67 period London club scene.

One of his original ideas for this album was to reinforce the evocation of times past by also linking in his own song 'The London Boys'...

DB: "Probably half a verse will be used between songs. It will be a newly recorded version. That dates from the first Deram album. It's about a young boy who comes up to London, gets pilled out of his head, all those things.

"I used to do that - get dressed up, go up to town on Friday night, see what was going on, stay for the night."

Happy Birthday wishes to MARK PLATI...

ON THIS DAY...
14th October 2025

On this day, 35 years ago, DAVID BOWIE and IMAN had their first ever date in Los Angeles, USA in 1990. The blind-date was set up by their mutual friend and hairdresser Teddy Antolin...

On this day, 48 years ago, DAVID BOWIE released his "Heroes" album. Recorded at Hansa Tonstudio, Berlin in July and August of 1977 and produced by Tony Visconti and David Bowie, the album also featured: Carlos Alomar, Dennis Davis, George Murray, Brian Eno, Robert Fripp and Antonia Maass.

RCA marketed the album with the blurbs: "Tomorrow belongs to those who can hear it coming" and "There's Old Wave. There's New Wave. And there's David Bowie..." It reached number #3 in the UK and stayed in the charts for a total of 26 weeks. Both the NME and Melody Maker named it as their 'Album of the Year'. Surely, the highest praise came from JOHN LENNON who stated in a 1980 interview - whilst recording his 'Double Fantasy' album - that his ambition was to "do something as good as "Heroes"."

BOWIE'S BACK - UNSEEN PHOTOGRAPHS
2nd October 2025

Bowie's Back by Ron Gott Published later this month is BOWIE'S BACK by RON GOTT.

This 60-page paperback is published on 16th October.

Synopsis: Bowie's Back is a collection of never-before-seen photographs of David Bowie live in concert as Ziggy Stardust at Friars Aylesbury (1972) and the Low/Heroes at Madison Square Garden (1978). Prior to this project, these images lived on contact sheets and Ron Gott had never seen them printed out. After seeing these, DB Burkeman immediately decided that they needed to be shared with the world.

"I made my first pilgrimage to London in the summer of '72. I had already been photographing bands for a few years and had a phone book full of musicians, journalists, and music company contacts. At a random gig at the Friars in Aylesbury, we did what so many American punters did: miss the last train back to London. That's how the promoter Dave Stopps came into my life. Putting us up for the night, he invited us back the next week to see the 'hottest tour in Britain'. Bowie was ending the first leg of his Ziggy tour and RCA was flying over a bunch of American journalists. So here I was, already at the venue as acquaintances Lenny Kaye, Lillian Roxon, and others filled in. The show itself was another one of those legendary performances you dream of being a part of that's still spoken of today." - Ron Gott.

About the Author: Ron Gott is a music photographer who thrived in rocks golden years of the late 60s through the 80s. Having photographed extensively in New York and London he has published in a number of "publications that time forgot". Starting with Crawdaddy, Changes, Fusion, Trouser Press as well as Rolling Stone, Village Voice, the NY Times and most major record companies. He has shown in various gallery shows and is represented in numerous private collections and institutions.

BBC BOWIE IN BERLIN DOCUMENTARY
1st October 2025

BBC Bowie in Berlin doc BBC Pop Music Television to explore David Bowie's Berlin years as never before with Bowie in Berlin

The film will explore when Bowie turned his back on fame and disappeared from sight into the streets of Cold War Berlin.

Through the voices of those who were closest to David Bowie during this transformative period of his life, and through the words of the man himself, Bowie in Berlin will shed new light on one of the most important artists in musical history - Jonathan Rothery, Head of BBC Popular Music TV.

BBC Two and BBC iPlayer will celebrate David Bowie in autumn 2026 with Bowie in Berlin (working title, 1 x 90'), a documentary marking the 50th anniversary of Bowie's arrival in the German capital.

A Mindhouse / Blackstar Films co-production, with Executive Producers Louis Theroux and Mandy Chang, and directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Francis Whately (David Bowie: Finding Fame, David Bowie: The Last Five Years, David Bowie: Five Years), Bowie in Berlin (working title) tells the story of a Bowie you've never seen, by exploring one of the most important periods of his life - when he turned his back on fame and success and disappeared from sight into the streets of Cold War Berlin, from 1976-1978.

Nearly 10 years after his death in 2016, the artist formerly known as Ziggy Stardust has become an idol of our age, and yet away from the fans and celebrities lining up to pay their homage, the reality of Bowie as a shy, introspective and vulnerable man, who often found fame intolerable, is largely forgotten. This film will change that.

Whately tells the story of Bowie's Berlin years in Bowie's own words, as well as the words of four remarkable women who shared his life during this time - Bowie's Berlin muses, Clare Shenstone, Romy Haag, Sarah-Rena Hine and Sydne Rome. Each of these extraordinary women have their own unique insight into the singer's life, art and character, providing a secret history of Bowie's time in the city. These women saw a Bowie that nobody else saw, and all gave him something different, helping his regeneration into an artist who no longer needed to hide behind characters, but was happy to perform as himself - David Robert Jones.

BBC Bowie in Berlin doc Sarah-Rena Hine Jonathan Rothery, Head of BBC Popular Music TV says: "I'm very proud to be bringing audiences such a unique film from Francis Whately, Louis Theroux and Mandy Chang. Through the voices of those who were closest to David Bowie during this transformative period of his life, and through the words of the man himself, Bowie in Berlin will shed new light on one of the most important artists in musical history."

Louis Theroux, Executive Producer for Mindhouse says: "This is a dream project. Francis's three previous Bowie films are the gold standard for Bowie film-making and indeed for docs about music in general. To have his artistry focused on the Berlin years - using the lens of the women in Bowie's life - is a perfect match of director and material. There's a wonderful unity of time and place to Bowie's period in Berlin. He hit bottom, but he also found himself making some of his most personal music, then relaunched himself for the first time without a mask, as himself. So, Berlin is the crucible for his incredible regeneration and everything that came afterwards."

Bowie in Berlin (working title) is a Mindhouse / Blackstar Films co-production for BBC Pop Music TV and BBC Two. It was commissioned TV by Jonathan Rothery, Head of BBC Popular Music TV. The Commissioning Editor for BBC Popular Music TV is Rachel Davies. The Executive Producers are Louis Theroux and Mandy Chang and the director is Francis Whately.

For more David Bowie programming on the BBC, audiences can find Francis Whately's Bowie in Berlin audio documentary on BBC Sounds (first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in September 2024, as part of the station's Archive on 4 strand). Also on BBC Sounds is the BBC Radio 6 Music podcast, Music Uncovered, David Bowie: Changeling, hosted by Kate Moss, which explores David Bowie's artistic evolution between 1970-1975, as well as Kate's interview with 6 Music's Nick Grimshaw (weekdays, 7-10am) about the podcast and her friendship with Bowie.
