Just published is DAVID BOWIE AND FILM: Hooked to the Silver Screen by STEPHEN GLYNN.
Synopsis: This book constitutes the first monograph dedicated to an academic analysis of David Bowie's appearances in film. Through close textual analysis together with production and reception histories, Bowie's 'silver screen' career is explored in full.
The book covers performance documentaries such as Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars, star vehicles ranging from the eulogised The Man Who Fell To Earth to the excoriated Just A Gigolo, plus roles from the horror chic of The Hunger and cult fantasy of Labyrinth to the valiant high-brow Baal and vainglorious high-budget Absolute Beginners, ending with Bowie as Bowie in Bandslam and others as 'Bowie' in Velvet Goldmine and Stardust.
Alongside showing his willingness to experiment (and at times fail) across a variety of genres, this study investigates Bowie's performative style that, while struggling to accommodate the requirements of cinematic realism, fits more harmoniously with alternative production codes and aesthetics. More broadly, by exploring the commercial, socio-cultural and ideological significance of Bowie on film, the book demonstrates how notions of gender, sexuality and identity formation, plus commodity and cultural capital, function and fluctuate in contemporary society.
Review: "David Bowie and Film: Hooked to the Silver Screen is an important book. It analyses Bowie's crossover stardom and provides new knowledge of not only Bowie as a cultural figure but also of the films Bowie acted in. As such, the book also offers a very useful and original case study of the ways in which one star can have a profound impact on British cinema history and cultural history." - (Paul Newland, University of Worcester, UK).

• On this day, 58 years ago, DAVID BOWIE (aka Davy Jones) aged 17 years old, appeared on the BBC One 'Tonight' programme as the President of 'The Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Long-Haired Men' in 1964. Look carefully and you can spot George Underwood who is stood on the far right, wearing suede boots.
Hosted by Cliff Michelmore, David along with several members of The Manish Boys told of their latest society.
(Ed. For the record, this wasn't Bowie's first TV appearance. His first known TV appearance was 4 months earlier on BBC Two 'The Beat Room' performing 'Liza Jane' as Davy Jones and The King Bees, which aired on 27th July 1964. Also appearing on episode #4 were Elkie Brooks, Georgie Fame, Wayne Gibson with The Dynamic Sounds and Kenny Lynch and The Echoes).
• On this day, 16 years ago, DAVID BOWIE performed at the 3rd Annual Black Ball Benefit for Keep A Child Alive at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City, USA in 2006.
This was to be his last live performance on stage with a band.
David performed three songs: 'Wild Is The Wind' (with Mike Garson on piano), 'Fantastic Voyage' (backed by Alicia Keys' band) and 'Changes' (duet with Alicia Keys).
Hosts Alicia Keys and Iman were joined by KCA founder Leigh Blake, emcee Wanda Sykes and honourees Richard Beckman, Dr. Paul Farmer and Partners in Health, and "Mama" Carol Dyanti.
Other musical performers were Alicia Keys, Damian Marley and Louis XIV.
As far as I'm aware, his performance wasn't professionally filmed and the only filmed footage was shot by Bowie fan Simone. Check out her footage below...
The Black Ball is an Annual fundraiser for KCA (Keep A Child Alive), the non-profit organisation who are committed to empowering children and young people with the necessary resources, confidence and opportunities to reach their full potential and live healthier, happier lives.

The upcoming memoir by GEOFF MACCORMACK first announced back in April is titled: 'DAVID BOWIE: ROCK 'N' ROLL WITH ME'.
This hardback, containing 240-pages, is published on 13th March 2023.
David Bowie: Rock 'n' Roll With Me is Geoff MacCormack's remarkable photographic memoir, charting his lifelong friendship with David Bowie. Images bring MacCormack's stories to life, showing the places he and Bowie inhabited, the people they met and the adventures they shared. Beginning at Burnt Ash Primary school in the mid-1950s, the years go by in a whirlwind of discovering and making music. The book contains nearly 150 photos taken by MacCormack throughout the years, some never seen before: from touring the Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane shows and sailing to New York on a world tour, to Bowie's first major film The Man Who Fell to Earth and the recording of Station to Station and his Thin White Duke persona.
David Bowie: Rock 'n' Roll With Me is an incredible story, told with wit and candour. A must for all Bowie fans, it sheds a rare insight into a friendship where two men shared their love for music from the moment they met to their final goodbyes.
About the Author:
Geoff MacCormack, David Bowie's lifelong friend, joined Bowie's 1973 world tour as an additional back-up vocalist and percussionist, and later as a 'Diamond Dog' in '74 and what would be known as 'The Young Americans Soul Tour'. He also worked on the six albums from Aladdin Sane to Station To Station. After three years of touring, recording and travelling with Bowie, MacCormack started an award winning (Gold Clio, Ivor Novello) music production partnership with Simon Goldenberg who he met, coincidentally, in The Three Tuns pub, home of Bowie's earlier 'Arts Lab'. For over 20 years, they wrote music for high-end advertising, films and TV. Geoff now manages the use and sale of his photographs of David Bowie around the world and has exhibited in St Petersburg, the USA and the UK, including the hugely successful 'Rock 'n' Roll With Me' exhibition at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery from September 2020 through to May 2022.
David Bowie: Rock 'n' Roll With Me is available to pre-order now!

Queen Bitch - (demo)
(David Bowie)
I'm up on the eleventh floor
Watching the cruisers below
My heart's in the basement
My weekend's at an all-time low
He's down on the street
And he's trying hard to pull sister Flo
And she's hoping to score
I just can't see her letting him go
Walk out of my sight
Right out of my mind
Oh she's so swishy in satin and tat
In her frock coat and bipperty-bopperty hat
God, I could do better than that
She's an old-time ambassador
A sweet talking, night walking games
And she's known in the darkest clubs
For pushing ahead of the dames
If she says she can do it
Then she can do it, she don't make false claims
For she's the Queen, and such are Queens
That your laughter is sucked in their brains
Now she's leading him on
And she'll lay him right down
Now she's leading him on
And she'll lay him right down
But it could have been me
Yes, it could have been me
Why didn't I say? Why didn't I say?
She's so swishy in satin and tat
In her frock coat and bipperty-bopperty hat
God, I could do better than that
So I lay down a while
And I gaze at my hotel wall
The bed feels so cold
That it don't feel like no bed at all
So he's down on the street
And I throw both his bags down the hall
There's a taste in my mouth
And it's no taste at all
And I'm phoning a cab
And my stomach feels small
But it could have been me
Yes, it could have been me
But I don't want to say
But I don't wanna know, no, no, no
Swishy in satin and tat
In her frock coat and bipperty-bopperty hat
God, I could do better than that
